Ex-WWE Champion Gives Major Update Amid Long Absence
Ex-WWE NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar has been absent from the company for over six months.
Escobar’s contract expired on October 6, 2025, and he initially left due to creative dissatisfaction despite being offered a higher salary.
He was rumored to join AEW after leaving the Stamford-based promotion.
However, he soon re-signed with the Stamford-based promotion, reportedly for more money and with promises of better creative plans. Since re-signing, Escobar has not appeared on WWE TV.
According to Fightful Select, the Stamford-based promotion has big plans in store for him. But the company is not in a hurry to implement the plans.
Amid his absence from TV, Escobar shared a tweet on X where he stated that he’s patiently waiting to be back in action.
Check out his post below.

The last time Escobar was seen on WWE TV was on the May 2 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, where he lost to Rey Fenix in a singles match.
His last match was at a SuperShow at Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, where he and his Legado del Fantasma teammates (Angel and Berto) suffered a loss to Mr. Iguana, Pagano & Psycho Clown in a six-man tag team match.
WWE Star Santos Escobar Was Supposed To Win The AAA Mega Championship
Before his contract ran out, WWE had huge plans for Santos Escobar involving AAA. He was supposed to beat El Hijo del Vikingo for the AAA Mega Championship, and his crew, Los Garza, was set to grab the AAA World Tag Team titles too.
This was all part of WWE’s push after fully acquiring AAA, spotlighting Escobar as a rising star. But once he turned down renewing his WWE contract, those plans got scrapped quickly.
Dominik Mysterio snagged the AAA Mega Championship instead, and Escobar’s big push got sidelined. Now that Escobar’s back in the Stamford-based promotion, Triple H may revisit this angle in the near future.
