Ex-WWE Champion Isn’t Retired Despite 10-Year Hiatus
An ex-WWE champion has revealed their retirement status.
David Otunga is a former 2-time tag team champion. During a recent appearance on Chris Van Vliet’s Insight, the 45-year-old claimed that he was not retired from professional wrestling.
His last match was at a 2015 SummerSlam House Show, where he lost to R-Truth in a singles match.
Otunga is known for his tenure as a member of The Nexus and the only member of the faction present through its entire duration.
He is also a lawyer by profession and has acted in films and TV shows, other than performing as a professional wrestler with the Stamford promotion.
When asked by the host if he considered himself retired, despite having not wrestled in over a decade, Otunga said:
No, I just consider myself as having not wrestled in a long time.
In the latter stages of his time in WWE, Otunga was offered non-wrestling roles, including that of a color commentator, which he held till mid-August 2019.
David Otunga And John Cena Held WWE Tag Team Titles
During John Cena’s famous feud with Wade Barrett’s Nexus, he lost a match at the 2010 Hell in a Cell that would see him join the faction.
In the coming weeks, he formed a tag team with David Otunga to defeat Drew McIntyre and “Dashing” Cody Rhodes at Bragging Rights, winning the tag team titles.
However, their reign would last only one day, as Barrett ordered Otunga to intentionally lose the title to Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater, thus keeping it within The Nexus but stripping John Cena of it.
During the interview with Chris Van Vliet, Otunga also said he would jump at the opportunity to return to the squared circle if asked.
