Ex-AEW Star Paid A Lot Longer Than Expected By Tony Khan
A former AEW star has praised Tony Khan for continuing to pay her for longer than she expected.
Kia Stevens – better known to wrestling fans as Awesome Kong – was part of the company from its launch in 2019. However, the star only wrestled five matches for the company from 2019-2020, with her last bout seeing her defeat Skyler Moore on the January 1st, 2020 edition of Dark.
During an appearance on Victoire, Kong looked back on her experience in the company. She explained that she stepped away in 2020 to film Netflix series GLOW, and then when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, “certain ailments” meant she could not travel and wrestle for the company.
“At the beginning of 2019, right from the jump — whenever AEW started, like for real, for real, I was there, okay?… I had to leave for a little bit to go shoot GLOW and then, while we were shooting GLOW, the pandemic happened, and because of certain ailments that I have, I could not travel, and God bless them, they paid me way longer than I thought they would or should.
Kong says she parted ways with the promotion amicably, reiterating that they paid her for “way longer” than she would have in the same situation.
“God bless ‘em, forever, and we just parted ways, because I couldn’t come back and why keep paying someone? We parted amicably, seriously, and they paid me way longer than I would’ve paid somebody who’s just not coming in a job. I’m just saying, so, yeah.”
Since leaving AEW, Awesome Kong wrestled one more time for TNA at IMPACT 1000, teaming with Gail Kim, Jordynne Grace, Mickie James, and Trinity to defeat Angelina Love, Deonna Purrazzo, Gisele Shaw, Savannah Evans, and Tasha Steelz.
