ECW Icon Facing Multiple Surgeries
One of ECW’s most recognizable stars is in need of several surgeries.
During the 1990s heydey of ECW, Sabu quickly became one of the company’s biggest stars. He was labeled the ‘Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal, Death–Death-defying maniac’ and more than lived up to the moniker with his incredibly brutal matches against the likes of Rob Van Dam and Sandman.
After the company closed its doors in 2001, Sabu continued to wrestle with the same hardcore style throughout the indies as well as having a brief run in WWE in the mid-2000s as part of their ECW revival.
Sabu officially retired in November 2021 due to mounting injuries and hasn’t had a match since then, although he did make a special appearance for AEW at Double Or Nothing in 2023. There, the star was in Adam Cole’s corner for an Unsanctioned Match against Chris Jericho.
During a recent appearance on ‘Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw’ Sabu revealed the toll his career took on his body, explaining that he needs multiple surgeries.
“I’ll tell you, I’ve felt better. I don’t feel really bad, but I feel pretty bad. My knee, my back, and my shoulders, they all need surgery. I’ve been going to the gym lately, but I have to suck it up and go. It’s never, ‘Alright, today I feel good.’ It’s like, ‘fuck,’ and it’s tough…”
Reflecting on his most recent surgery, a hip replacement, the star said it took six months for him to get back to working out despite the pain being relieved almost instantly.
“I had my hip replaced. It took me about six months until I felt like working out. The pain was gone the first day.”
The star also revealed that he is suffering from spinal stenosis as well as needing a complete shoulder replacement.
“My neck is alright. My back, I got spinal stenosis, and then my shoulder needs a complete replacement. My knee, also.”
Would ECW Legend Sabu Come Out Of Retirement?
After his experience in AEW, Sabu revealed that he would have come out of retirement to face HOOK. The legend explained that he had a scenario planned out that would see him winning the FTW Championship and then losing it back to the young star in his final match.
