Cody Rhodes Says World Heavyweight Title “Not Related” To Finishing His Story
Cody Rhodes has made his feelings known as it relates to the World Heavyweight Title on Raw and WWE’s other big championship prize held by Roman Reigns.
On the road to WrestleMania 39, Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes spoke often about “finishing his story” which was a phrase that WWE’s announcers pushed heavily as well. It’s the story he told in April 2022 when he returned to WWE after six years away with the goal of winning the WWE Championship.
Winning that WWE Championship meant so much to Cody because it’s a prize that his legendary father Dusty Rhodes never got a chance to win. Cody recalled a picture in his family home of Dusty holding that WWE Championship, but Dusty only held it due to a countout and he never actually won the title from Superstar Billy Graham.
That WrestleMania 39 match had many people thinking Cody would be the guy to beat Roman Reigns. However, it didn’t happen due to outside forces like Solo Sikoa interfering in the match.
Since Roman Reigns is the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion on Smackdown and Cody is on Raw where Seth “Freakin” Rollins holds the World Heavyweight Title, the only path for Cody to get to Roman again appears to be winning the 2024 Royal Rumble next January.
In an interview with Fightful, Cody Rhodes talked about WWE possibly putting the World Heavyweight Championship on him to finish his story.
“I don’t think that was ever something in terms of on the table because it was very clear to every body, new people, young infrastructure people, all the way up to the top brass, what my story and goal when returning was. I’m talking about the physical hardware of the belt.”
“Anytime a belt is new and shows up, every superstar, we all want it. Just now, I signed a replica one at an appearance. ‘Man, it’s very nice.’ We all have gold fever for these titles. The way it came out of that press conference made it sound non-important. That’s as important of a title as it can possibly be, it’s just not related to the ‘finish the story’ theme.”
Cody Rhodes Still Values The World Heavyweight Title
Even though the World Heavyweight Title on Raw doesn’t have the 60+ year lineage of the WWE Championship that Cody Rhodes really wants, it’s still a prize that Cody would like to hold.
“What happens is what happens. This is a very unpredictable world. It gets more unpredictable by the day. Every day there is some level of news, scandal, excitement, something. I believe, sincerely, this run that I have been lucky to get, and also have earned, I want to let it ride and see where it goes.”
“I don’t look at it as diminishing anything. It’s a massive title that represent Raw, which is the show I’m on.”
