CM Punk’s “Counterfeit Bucks” Line Approved By Management
CM Punk had the wrestling world talking on Saturday night when he returned to AEW in a big way on the debut edition of Collision.
Punk cut an impassioned and at times just plain angry promo to open the show where he took jabs at some people while bringing up the fact that he has not been beaten for the AEW World Championship that he won at All Out in September 2022.
At one point during his promo, CM Punk mentioned Warner Brothers Discovery boss David Zaslav as he alluded to The Young Bucks:
“You know what David Zaslav calls me?… ‘One Bill Phil.’ That’s because I am the one true, genuine article in a business of counterfeit Bucks…”
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Daily Update, Dave Meltzer noted that the line had been approved by management and rather than being surprised by the allusion to The Young Bucks he was more surprised by the allusion to the supposed $1 billion deal that had been reported AEW was signing with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Following his opening promo, CM Punk returned to the ring in the main event of Collision where he teamed with AEW Tag Team Champions to defeat the trio of Jay White, Juice Robinson, and Samoa Joe.
Reports have suggested that Punk could be back on screen in Chicago on Wednesday night with the star seemingly scheduled for Dynamite.
