Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega set the stage for AEW with their match at Wrestle Kingdom in 2018 but now Jericho has revealed why a rubber match between the two men was nixed.

Jericho stunned the wrestling world when he made a move to compete in an NJPW ring while still associated with WWE. The star took on Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12 in January 2018 with Omega’s IWGP US Championship on the line.

The bout made headlines across the world and when all was said and done it was Kenny Omega that came out on top in the battle of the Winnipeggers.

The two men faced off once again when AEW was launched as they headlined the company’s first pay-per-view, Double Or Nothing in May 2019. This time it was Jericho who picked up the win earning him the right to challenge for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship.

Speaking on Talk Is Jericho, Chris Jericho revealed that he wanted to face Omega in a rematch in their hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada when Dynamite debuted there in March 2023. However, his plan was nixed when he was told that Omega at the time was part of a trio and so the two long-time rivals were part of a three-way trios match instead:

“We went to Winnipeg, Manitoba, I pitched Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho. Couldn’t get the match, you know why? Trios. Me, Danny, and Sammy had to beat his stupid ass, but still. No singles match, ‘Kenny is in a trio.’ What are you talking about? This is Kenny Omega.”

The AEW Trios Champions The House of Black emerged victorious from the bout that saw Jericho team with Daniel Garcia and Sammy Guevara and Kenny Omega join up with The Young Bucks.
