Chris Jericho Creative Gives Hint At Big Changes For Ring Of Honor
Chris Jericho could be playing a major role in Ring of Honor’s future.
On the October 23rd episode of Dynamite, Chris Jericho claimed the ROH Title for the second time. The victory came in a Ladder War against Mark Briscoe, which was a rematch from WrestleDream where Briscoe walked out with the gold.
Briscoe appeared to be on the verge of retaining his World Title, but he was thrown through two tables by Big Bill who subsequently lifted Jericho to victory — literally.
On the following episode of Dynamite, Jericho took aim at his critics who are less than happy to see him holding World Championship gold. However, there could have been more to it.
Chris Jericho Key To ROH Future
Reporting in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer explained that Jericho’s promo on the October 30th edition of Dynamite was much more than an arrogant heel looking to get heat. Meltzer said the promo was intended to hit back at critics of AEW, while his recent ROH World Title win could be a big hint that a new TV deal is on the way.
Jericho was the first-ever AEW World Champion, a move heavily linked to raising the brand’s profile.
Other aspects of Jericho’s promo were said to point out to critics that they aren’t as clever as they think if they haven’t worked out his role in the bigger picture.
My gut when Jericho won the title last week, which I said in a few places, was that with ROH in television negotiations, it’s very clear that the idea that Jericho would be the world champion to whomever the negotiations are with would be more beneficial at the time of talks than almost anyone on the roster…
We do know negotiations are close for an ROH deal. TruTV has always been the station rumored because they are transitioning into being a sports channel in prime time and thus would need new content. If the financials of the deal are good, then the decision to keep the ROH brand alive would become a positive financial decision…
But he pushed that because of him, AEW became a pro wrestling powerhouse and he’s going to do the same for ROH and would be leading ROH to the biggest stage and biggest success it has ever seen, and also said “Never underestimate Chris Jericho, you dumb asses” and “I’m going to take ROH to places it’s never been before.”
Chris Jericho appeared on the October 31st edition of ROH HonorClub where he promoted the main event between Athena and Abadon. Athena recently became the longest-reigning ROH Champion in history.
