Charlotte Flair Addresses ‘Belt Drop’ Segment

Becky Lynch Charlotte Flair exchanging titles

Charlotte Flair has discussed the infamous moment on SmackDown where she and Becky Lynch were due to exchange title belts in an ill-tempered segment.

The 2021 WWE Draft saw SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch move to Raw while Raw Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair was drafted to SmackDown. This left the two champions holding the opposite titles to their show.

WWE decided to resolve the situation by having the pair simply exchange the title belts on SmackDown. However, the segment ended up being anything but simple.

Instead of handing her title to Lynch as planned, Charlotte Flair dropped her title on the floor. This deviation from the script left ‘The Man’ furious. Once backstage the pair got into a heated argument which led to Flair being escorted from the building.

Becky Lynch has previously spoken of her frustrations about the segment to Stone Cold Steve Austin on his Broken Skull Sessions, saying she knew what was going to happen before it did:

“It should’ve been easy… It should’ve been a straightforward thing. We were supposed to exchange the titles. I grab it out of her hand unknowingly, I’m ‘Becky Two Belts’ for a second then I toss her the title, then she tells Sonya (Deville) to pick it up, then she challenges me to a fight, and I back out of it and I go. So everybody was supposed to get their moment there.”

“I told some people that this isn’t what’s going to happen. When I try to grab it, she’s going to drop it, and that’s what happened. And so, when all that was going on, I was just fuming. Mostly because I knew in advance that was what was going to happen and I had no way to stop it. And anyway we talked about going into business for yourself and I lost my head a bit.”

Now Charlotte Flair has joined Austin on his show and The Queen has a very different take on events, saying the belt falling to the floor was purely accidental:

“You’ve got two women that want to be the best. They want to be in that top spot. I wish I could sit here and tell you that I did it on purpose. But if people need me to be that bad guy, I’ll be that bad guy. Things happen on screen. I would never go on a scripted television show and purposely do something on purpose. It was accidental.”
