Brock Lesnar-Gunther Match Being Planned For WrestleMania 39
A first-time-ever matchup between Brock Lesnar and GUNTHER is reportedly in the works for Wrestlemania 39 next April.
There’s a big match potentially set to take place next April. Some people may even call it a dream match because of the legacies that Brock Lesnar and WWE’s Intercontinental Champion Gunther have created during their careers.
It is being reported by WrestlingNewsCo that a source familiar with WWE’s creative plans has said that Lesnar vs. Gunther is one of the matches listed internally for WrestleMania 39, which takes place on April 1st and 2nd at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
During a recent interview with Illinois’ WMBD TV, Gunther spoke highly about Lesnar and made it clear that he would love to face Lesnar some day as his dream match.
“If I had to pin it down to one name, I’d say it’s Brock Lesnar at the moment. When I was young and watching WWE, I enjoyed watching his matches. Later on when I progressed in my career, I was able to watch wrestling and analyze how people work. He’s always been somebody I was impressed with. He’s one of the best to ever do it. I think that’s the biggest possible challenge for me at the moment.”
Lesnar has main evented five WrestleManias in his legendary career and if Lesnar competes at WrestleMania 39, it will be 20 years after his first WrestleMania event in 2003 when he won the WWE Title from Kurt Angle in the main event of WrestleMania 19. That was a dream match at the time too.
Brock Lesnar is a former 10-time WWE World Champion, which includes seven reigns as the WWE Champion and holding the WWE Universal Title three times. That is over the course of the last 20 years although Lesnar was out of WWE for about eight years from 2004 to 2012.
As for Gunther, he’s been the dominant Intercontinental Champion since June when he beat Ricochet. Gunther has yet to have a WrestleMania since he was called up to Smackdown after WrestleMania 38 earlier this year.
It is unknown if Gunther will still be the Intercontinental Champion by the time he faces Lesnar at WrestleMania 39. It’s possible that WWE could have Lesnar cost Gunther the title, which could lead to a match at WrestleMania.
For now, it’s just a rumor that could certainly come to fruition in the months ahead. As wrestling fans, we know that plans can sometimes change, especially on the road to WrestleMania.
