AEW Star Reaches Huge Championship Milestone

AEW Tony Khan

One AEW star has reached a championship milestone almost unheard of in the modern era.

In December 2022, the wrestling world was a very different place. Vince McMahon was about to force his way back through the door at WWE, CM Punk had only been part of one backstage fight in AEW, and John Cena sneaked back into WWE to preserve his record of having at least one match in every calendar year since he debuted for the company in 2022, but there was no talk of retirement yet.

In Ring of Honor, that month saw Athena defeat Mercedes Martinez at Final Battle to win the ROH Women’s World Championship. That show will always be tinged with sadness as it marked the final ROH match of Jay Briscoe’s life, but for Athena, it sparked a run that she has vowed will last forever.

AEW & ROH Star Athena Hits 3 Years As Champion

Athena has now hit 3 years as ROH Women’s World Champion in a reign that has seen her defend the gold against the likes of Marina Shafir, Willow Nightingale, Miyu Yamashita, Emi Sakura, Yuka Sakazaki, Skye Blue, Angelina Love, Nyla Rose, Hikaru Shida, Red Velvet, Queen Aminata, Thekla, Alex Windsor, Thunder Rosa, Mina Shirakawa, Harley Cameron, Persephone, and many, many more.

Athena recently attempted to bring that success into AEW when she joined Mercedes Mone for the tournament to crown the inaugural AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions. Mercedes and Athena fell at the first hurdle as they lost to Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale.

But given Mercedes Mone’s recent luck in AEW, perhaps Athena should not be the one getting the blame for that loss.
