AEW Announcer Has No Interest In Modern WWE

An AEW commentator isn’t focused on WWE.

In recent days, the prickly relationship between WWE and AEW again came to the forefront, this time following comments from Darby Allin. In a new interview, Allin said that AEW is now in a better place after the “cancer” was cut out, while pointing his finger at wrestlers who refused to lose.

Although he didn’t name names, many have taken his comments to be not-so-subtle shots at the likes of Rusev and Aleister Black, who swapped AEW for WWE in 2025.

To add to the rivalry between the two companies, given the nature of pro wrestling, many figures within AEW have some kind of past connection to WWE, including Tony Schiavone. Although Schiavone is synonymous with WCW, he also worked with WWE between April 1989 and April 1990.

However, that doesn’t mean the beloved commentator is going out of his way to keep up with modern WWE.

On the latest edition of his What Happened When podcast, Schiavone said that he’s determined to keep his attention firmly on AEW.

“I have no interest in watching WWE or NXT current stuff, and that’s not to say anything bad about what they’re doing. I just have no interest in it because I want us to cut our own path and not try to be anything like them.”

Tony Schiavone Still Loves Old WWE

Shiavone explained that his comments don’t mean he has anything against WWE or even watching their old content, pointing out that he recently watched Sasha Banks vs. Bayley on his podcast. He added that he doesn’t want anything WWE is doing to influence how he does his job.

“I do have an interest in watching old independent wrestling and old ECW and even old WWE back in the day, or old NXT,” he said. “We watched, of course, one of the matches we watched was, to me, the greatest women’s match I’d ever seen with Sasha Banks and Bayley.”

Next up for AEW is WrestleDream on October 18 in St. Louis, Missouri. The stacked card willl see Samoa Joe will challenge “Hangman” Adam Page for the World Championship, while Kris Statlander will defend her Women’s World Title against “Timeless” Toni Storm.

Elsewhere, Darby Allin meets Jon Moxley in an “I Quit” Match and Kyle Fletcher will defend the TNT Championship against Mark Briscoe.
