Adam Copeland Reveals Surprising Reason WWE Rejected Attitude Era Star’s Return
Adam Copeland might be part of the AEW roster these days but he’s revealed a reunion with a former partner in WWE was shut down by his former company.
Back in his days as Edge in WWE, Adam Copeland was involved in a brutal feud with his former group, The Judgment Day. That culminated in a huge Hell In A Cell match at WrestleMania 39 that saw Copeland go back to the future with a fiery entrance reminiscent of his early days in the company as part of The Brood.
During the feud, speculation had run rampant that The Brood’s leader Gangrel could return to help his former partner but it ultimately it wasn’t to be. And now Adam Copeland has explained why.
Adam Copeland’s Brood Pitch Rejected By WWE
Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on his Insight podcast, Copeland revealed he had pitched to be reunited with Gangrel but WWE turned it down, claiming nobody would remember the group – despite them using The Brood’s entrance theme for his WrestleMania 39 entrance:
I tried and I just got shut down. Every person shut it down. [Why?] So this isn’t a knock on WWE, but I’d always get the ‘well nobody remembers.’ People remember, wrestling fans remember and I think wrestling fans want to be rewarded for remembering. And that’s a way to reward them. That’s what I’ve always felt.
Copeland then touched on his recent match in AEW with another former ally in Matt Cardona and how when Cardona appeared, the crowd instantly realised the significance of the two stars squaring off:
I think, you know, you fast forward to me and Matt Cardona doing a Cope Open. And his music hits and he comes out. I mean, they remembered. And so I’ve always been a fan of pulling in things from the past and kind of integrating them into current things. But yeah, that was one I just kept getting shut down. I realised, okay, that was not a hill to die on because it didn’t get to happen. It’s not my sandbox, I got to do with what I’ve been given.
Adam Copeland retained his TNT Championship in a brutal No Disqualification match with Brody King on Dynamite in Edmonton. Copeland will have his hands full again when AEW heads to Vancouver for Collision and he puts his gold on the line against Kyle O’Reilly. That show will also see the nephew of an iconic WWE star make his debut for AEW.
