Adam Cole Details How It Can Be “Incredibly Stressful” To Be World Champion
Adam Cole has experience being a top guy in a company or brand and he hopes to reach that level in AEW as well.
Over the last month, Adam Cole has been appearing regularly with the AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman in matches and numerous vignettes. That’s because they were paired together in the Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament.
This past Wednesday on AEW Dynamite, Adam Cole & MJF picked up a win in the Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament Semifinals by beating the big man team of Brian Cage and Big Bill.
In addition to their success in the ring, MJF and Cole have done entertaining promos together in the ring as well as some unique vignettes as well.
While everything appears to be fine with MJF and Cole, who seems to like the cocky AEW World Champion at this point, it could all be a ploy by MJF to get Cole to trust him before MJF turns on his friend. It’s all because MJF sees Cole as a threat to the AEW World Title, especially because they had a 30-Minute Draw on the June 14th edition of AEW Dynamite.
Prior to his AEW career, Adam Cole was an ROH World Champion three times for over 400+ days. Adam Cole also had the longest NXT Title reign ever at 403 days (as recognized by WWE).
During an interview with BBC Sounds, Adam Cole spoke about his desire to be a World Champion again.
“It’s always daunting — maybe daunting isn’t the right word, but incredibly stressful maybe, but along those lines. That’s just because of the responsibility, and then also the importance that you put on in a situation like that.”
“Any time I was Ring of Honor Champion, it was something that I cherished, something that I loved, something that I took pride in –- but there is a stress level to being put in that situation. You’re the guy who is kind of leading the charge.”
“And it was the same thing with NXT, I approached that the exact same way. Being put in a situation to be the AEW World Champion and getting to carry the brand is something that I would treat with the exact same respect and focus of importance on being put in that role. At the same time, it certainly does help that I’ve been in that situation before.”
As he continued, Adam Cole spoke about his goal in AEW as well.
“I hope that someday I get the chance to be that guy in AEW.”
Look ahead, Cole & MJF will team up again this coming Wednesday on AEW Dynamite against Sammy Guevara & Daniel Garcia in the Blind Tournament Tag Team Finals. The winners of that matc will be rewarded with an AEW Tag Team Title match.
