WWE News: Cena vs. Del Rio and Miz TV segment set for SmackDown Live

TJR Wrestling

Here’s what WWE has planned for SmackDown Live this Tuesday based on this information provided from WWE.com:

The last SmackDown Live before SummerSlam is going to be a scorcher.

WWE.com has learned that John Cena will be in action on Tuesday night, squaring off against longtime rival Alberto Del Rio. In case you don’t remember, Del Rio just so happens to be the guy who ended Cena’s historic reign as United States Champion at WWE Hell in a Cell in October 2015. To say there’s some bad blood there would be an understatement, and if Cena’s not careful he could be walking into his SummerSlam bout against AJ Styles with a broken arm.

In addition to that epic match, The Miz will welcome both WWE World Champion Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler onto the set of MizTV for a no-holds-barred interview. Tensions between the SummerSlam opponents have risen like mercury in a thermometer on a hot August afternoon since their title match was set. Don’t be surprised if it all boils over when The Miz starts turning up the heat.

Don’t miss SmackDown Live, this Tuesday at 8/7 C on USA.

TJR Thoughts: It’s nice to see WWE actually advertising a match and a segment for Tuesday’s show. I wish they did it for Raw too, but so far there’s nothing announced for it.

Cena vs. Del Rio is not a new match by any means, but it’s been a while since they have wrestled. I’m actually surprised that WWE isn’t doing Randy Orton vs. Del Rio again because last week’s Smackdown match ended in a disqualification, so I figured they would do it again with Orton winning clean. Instead, they are going with this match. I expect Cena to win as a way to put him over heading into his SummerSlam match against AJ Styles. Del Rio doesn’t have a current feud.

By the way, WWE.com writer, Cena’s “historic reign” wasn’t that long because he won the US Title back from Seth Rollins five weeks before. It was only a 35 day reign.

As for the Miz TV segment with Ziggler and Ambrose, that’s pretty standard for what they usually do prior to a major PPV like SummerSlam. Will it lead to one of them wrestling Miz in a singles match? Possibly. That tends to happen in these situations as well.
