It was announced today by WWE that Smackdown Live superstar Aiden English will be joining the 205 Live announce team starting this week and will be a part of the team through the WrestleMania season. English will remain on Smackdown as well.

English commented on the news on Twitter.

Here’s the official announcement from WWE:

Beginning tonight on WWE 205 Live, SmackDown Superstar Aiden English joins Vic Joseph and Nigel McGuinness as a guest commentator through WrestleMania season. English will still compete on SmackDown LIVE, but he’s seizing the opportunity to show off his abilities at the announce table.

WWE 205 Live General Manager Drake Maverick explained his decision behind the addition of The Drama King.

“The McMahons have been shaking things up on Raw and SmackDown LIVE, so I’m going to follow suit,” Maverick said. “Aiden English is an active Superstar and is very opinionated, and I believe those opinions and perspective will add to the current commentary team, only adding to the entertainment value of The Most Exciting Hour of Television.”
Senior Director of On-Air Talent and Raw commentator Michael Cole also praised the move.

“We wanted to do something special for WrestleMania season, and Royal Rumble week kicks off the Road to WrestleMania,” said Cole. “We’ve been working with Aiden at the WWE Performance Center to see if he has the chops, and it turns out he’s pretty good.”

Don’t miss Aiden English’s debut as part of the WWE 205 Live announce team tonight!

The comment from Cole is because he runs the announce teams in WWE. Drave Maverick is just the storyline GM of 205 Live as we all know.

Since 205 Live takes place after Smackdown, English is already at the show anyway, so it won’t change his weekly travel plans.

TJR Thoughts: I’m happy for Aiden. He’s a well-spoken guy that has a background in being in the theatre from before he was in WWE. He’s also a lifelong wrestling fan living his dream. I think he’ll do well in the role. He’s only 31 years old, so he has a lot of years left in the ring. If he can impress the bosses as an announcer then that’s something he can do later in his career as well.

I hope that English can do more on Smackdown as a wrestler, but he hasn’t been used for a few months. He needs a good storyline. Frankly, I thought the Rusev Day angle with Rusev could have lasted a lot longer before they did the split. That’s something WWE does too often where they end a good thing too soon. Anyway, I wish Aiden the best in this role.
