WWE Championship Match Set For SummerSlam: Ambrose vs. Ziggler

TJR Wrestling

Tonight’s (July 26) edition of Smackdown Live was the first Smackdown episode of the so-called “New Era”. With Dean Ambrose retaining the WWE Championship at Battleground, it was time to determine a new number one contender for The Lunatic Fringe’s title.

Shane McMahon and Smackdown General Manager Daniel Bryan announced that there would be a Six Pack Challenge Match to determine the number one contender for the WWE Title. The six men included in the match were John Cena, AJ Styles, Bray Wyatt, Dolph Ziggler, Baron Corbin and Apollo Crews. It was a tightly contested match in which Ziggler ended up walking away victorious.

This sets up Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler for the WWE Title at SummerSlam, which takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday, August 21.

Mark’s reaction: I’m so happy for Ziggler. His win was a major surprise to me as I thought Wyatt was going to win for sure and that Ziggler would go on to be in the Intercontinental Title picture. Having Ziggler win was important for Smackdown though as it elevates Ziggler and makes him look like a bigger star. We’ve seen in the past that Ziggler has that potential to be a top guy and it looks like he’ll have a fresh start in this “New Era”.
