October 6th – On This Day In Wrestling History
Our full On This Day In Wrestling History section can be found here.
1997 – In one of the most controversial moments in the history of Monday Night Raw, WWE conducted an interview with Melanie Pillman that aired less than 24 hours after the passing of her husband Brian.
1999 – Gorilla Monsoon passed away due to complications brought on by diabetes at the age of 62. Monsoon, real name Robert James Marella, was one of the most revered personalities in the history of the company. The Hall Of Famer was a famed wrestler turned commentator and backstage administrator. Famous for manning the desk right behind the entrance curtain to give last-minute direction and timing to wrestlers, the very position was eventually named The Gorilla Position as a tribute to the icon.
2007 – Nigel McGuiness defeated Takeshi Morishima to win the ROH World Championship in Edison, New Jersey.
2013 – WWE presented the Battleground PPV at the First Niagra Center in Buffalo, New York. The event ended up with the lowest number of PPV buys since 2006’s ECW December to Dismember event. The highlight of the show was a wonderful tag team match in which Dustin and Cody Rhodes defeated The Shield (Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns) to win their reinstatement into WWE.
2015 – Matt Hardy vacated the TNA World Heavyweight Championship just one day after winning it. The title was vacated in reality because TNA had no plans or cash flow to tape further TV content.
2019 – WWE presented the Hell In A Cell PPV from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento California. The highlights of the show were Charlotte Flair defeating Bayley to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship via submission as well as Becky Lynch retaining her Raw title against Sasha Banks in a Hell In A Cell match. The main event of the show saw Seth Rollins and The Fiend fight to a much-derided no content in another cell bout.
2020 – Controversy reigned in IMPACT Wrestling when it looked as if Jordynne Grace had won the X-Division Championship from Rohit Raju. The match was won when Grace rolled up Raju after Willie Mack had grabbed the belt from the title holder’s hands – which meant the referee never held the title above his head before the match, and Raju claimed (and convinced the official) that it was never officially a title match.
