1988 – The very first Clash of the Champions event from Jim Crockett Promotions aired on free TV in the States from Greensboro, North Carolina. The event was similar to the WWF Saturday Night’s Main Event NBC show, and this first edition was scheduled on the same night as WrestleMania IV to attempt to eat into the success of the WWF’s major annual PPV.

On the card

  • Mike Rotunda defeated Jimmy Garvin in a College Rules match.
  • The Midnight Express defeated The Fantastics by disqualification in a NWA United States Tag Team Championship match.
  • The Roads Warriors & Dusty Rhodes were victorious over The Powers of Pain & Ivan Koloff in a Barbed Wired match.
  • Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard lost the NWA World Tag Team Championship to Lex Luger & Bary Windham.
  • Ric Flair and Sting wrestled to a 45 minute time limit draw in the main event for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

1988 – WrestleMania IV took place in the Atlantic City Convention Hall, and was referred to on-air during the live broadcast as Trump Plaza, which was the neighbouring hotel and casino owned and founded by Donald Trump. The main focus of this event was a 14-man tournament to crown a new undisputed WWF World Champion. The title was vacated for the first time in its history based on the controversary and uncertainty birthed by the result of the recent Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant WWF Title match on ‘The Main Event’.

“The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase had made a number of attempts to ‘purchase’ the title from Hogan, but eventually he bought out Andre The Giant’s contract with the aim and purpose of Andre defeating Hogan for the title, and relinquishing the championship to the kayfabe millionaire. The title was vacated as a result of the Hogan & Andre match on 5th February 1988, and a tournament was booked for this event, making this one of the most important storylines in the company’s history. The tournament, and the WWF Championship, was won by ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage who defeated Ted DiBiase in the final to begin his first reign with the company’s top title.

1991 – Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart made his debut as a colour commentator alongside Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan on WWF Wrestling Challenge from Reno, Nevada.

2000 – In Houston, Texas on the go-home edition of WWF Raw ahead of WrestleMania 2000, Mr McMahon & The Rock defeated Shane McMahon & The Big Show in the tag-team main event. Both Vince and Shane would be in the respective corners of The Rock and The Big Show for the fatal four-way elimination match at WrestleMania in Anaheim, California six days later.

2006 – On the go-home edition of Raw ahead of WrestleMania XXII, it was “The Chairman vs The Champ” as John Cena picked up a disqualification win over Mr McMahon due to outside interference from Cena’s WrestleMania opponent, Triple H.

2008 – TNA presented their first ever live edition of Impact from the Impact Zone in Orlando, Florida. In the main event Christian Cage, Kevin Nash, Rhyno & Sting were victorious over A.J. Styles, Brother Devon, Brother Ray & Tomko in an eight man tag team match.

2015 – Jay Briscoe retained the ROH World Heavyweight Title against Samoa Joe in the main event of ROH Supercard of Honor IX in Redwood City, California. This was notably the last ROH appearance for Samoa Joe, the man who held the ROH world title for an astonishing and record-breaking 645 days.

2016 – At PROGRESS Chapter 27: The Lost Art of Suffering at the Electric Ballroom in London, Marty Scurll retained the PROGRESS Title in a nine-way elimination match.
