Updated Lineup for WWE Clash of Champions on Sept. 27 – Roman Reigns faces Jey Uso for Universal Title

There are two official matches for WWE Clash of Champions on September 27.

Last night on Smackdown, we found out that new Universal Champion Roman Reigns will be defending the championship against an unlikely foe, Roman’s cousin Jey. I should point out that one time I saw an Usos interview where Jimmy and Jey said Roman’s dad Sika is technically their uncle because Sika is an uncle of Rikishi (The Usos dad), so you could say Roman is their uncle because Roman and Rikishi are first cousins. If you look at the Anoi’a family tree, that is true. However, they just make it simple by saying that The Usos and Roman are cousins. They all grew up very close as best friends, all three guys were born in 1985, I’ve heard and Roman actually has two sets of twin sons now! The twin gene is strong in that family.

Anyway, the story was that Sheamus took out Big E with a cheap attack in the parking lot and that allowed a replacement in the Fatal 4-Way match. That led to Paul Heyman, who is Roman’s “special counsel” now, talking to WWE Official Adam Pearce and then we saw Jey Uso in the match. Jey got the pinfall in the match after Matt Riddle hit a Floating Bro splash off the top and Jey hit him with a Superfly Splash for the pinfall win.

It’s a unique situation and I doubt many people are going to pick Reigns to lose that match. As noted in my Smackdown review, I think it’s a good move in terms of advancing the story that Roman Reigns is a changed man. By having Reigns face and beat his cousin Jey, it will show off a more vicious side of the heel Reigns character. Is it a strong match? Not really because Jey is a tag team wrestler. However, it’s a way to tell the story of Roman as a heel now. Plus, the next PPV is Hell in a Cell on November 1, which is likely a more appropriate place for Reigns to face a tougher foe like “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt or Braun Strowman or both of them.

If you’re wondering about Jimmy Uso’s status, he is out of action for the rest of the year because he suffered a torn ACL in his knee at WrestleMania during a triple threat Ladder Match. Hopefully Jimmy is back in action early next year.

As of this writing, there are only two official matches for Clash of Champions. As noted, it’s on September 27, so they have plenty of time to build the rest of the card.

WWE Championship: Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Randy Orton

Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jey Uso

There was a match on Smackdown where Heavy Machinery beat The Miz and John Morrison. It wasn’t officially announced as a number one contender’s tag team match, but it would make sense to see Heavy Machinery go on to challenge Smackdown Tag Team Champions Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura. Smackdown is lacking in babyface teams, so it would makes sense.

It also seems like there will be a triple threat match for the Intercontinental Champion with current champion Jeff Hardy, the man that thinks he’s still champion Sami Zayn and AJ Styles. My guess is that will be a Ladder Match.

The Women’s Tag Team Title match could be Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax defending against Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan, who won a number one contender’s match on Raw this past Monday. However, that could happen on Raw instead of Clash of Champions.

Bayley, the long term Smackdown Women’s Champion, turned on best friend Sasha Banks on Smackdown last night. It’s possible that they have a match at Clash of Champions, but I think they’ll save it for further down the road like Hell in a Cell or maybe next year. It just depends how long Banks is out selling the left knee injury.

All nine titles on Raw and Smackdown will be on the line, so we’ll learn more in the weeks ahead.
