TJR Retro: WWF Smackdown 07/06/00 Review
The road to WWF Fully Loaded 2000 continued. The main three matches at that show were all set up with angles on Raw when The Rock was attacked by Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle started his rivalry with The Undertaker with a cheap shot and Triple H continued to have issues with Chris Jericho.
Here’s the synopsis from WWE Network: “As the rivalry between Chris Jericho and Triple H continues to escalate, Commissioner Mick Foley gives The Game an opportunity to earn a match with Y2J if he can survive a Handicap Elimination Match. Plus, WWE Champion The Rock teams with Chyna & European Champion Eddie Guerrero for a Six-Man Tag Team main event and much more.”
This show was taped on Tuesday, July 4th, which is Independence Day for America’s birthday.

WWF Smackdown #46
July 6, 2000 (Taped July 4)
From the National Car Rental Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
This show has a TV-14 rating and D, L, V on WWE Network.
The Smackdown intro video aired. The pyro went off in the arena, there were signs all over, it was a vocal crowd and they were full of energy. The announce team was Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler as usual for Smackdown.
Kurt Angle made his entrance with his crown and scepter in his hands. The fans were all over him with loud booing. Angle complained about fans not showing respect to him as the King of the Ring. Angle talked about the many old people there by saying they will die very soon, so they won’t get to see him win the WWF Title. Angle also apologized to The Undertaker and Kane for costing them the WWF Tag Team Titles, but his intentions were just to help Edge and Christian. Angle said he thinks Undertaker has the integrity to forgive him.
Chris Jericho got a big pop for his entrance. Jericho addressed “Kirk Angel” by saying he wanted to apologize to the Jerichoholics for having to listen to one of Angle’s boring speeches. Jericho teased apologizing to Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley, then said he didn’t and called her names. Jericho said he hoped that Triple H pulled the splinters out of his ass (that was bleeped) after Jericho put him through the table last week.
Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley walked down to ringside (along with the Women’s Championship) as the match began. Huge boos for Stephanie along with “slut” chants. The announcers said that Triple H wasn’t there yet.
Kurt Angle vs. Chris Jericho
Pre-match notes: Angle was the heel and Jericho was the face. Both guys would go on to win many World Titles in WWE, but at this point, neither guy had one of those yet.
Angle sent Jericho to the apron, Jericho up top and he hit a missile dropkick. Angle sent Jericho throat first into the top rope followed by a suplex. Angle tossed Jericho out of the ring and then back in with a clothesline. Jericho with a kick to the gut followed by a backbreaker for a two count. Angle with a clothesline for two. Angle stomped away on Jericho against the turnbuckle, but Jericho came back with a spinning heel kick to the face. Jericho hit a flying forearm to the head that barely connected. Angle went for a leapfrog, but Jericho countered into a powerslam for two. Jericho with a bulldog, so Stephanie went on the apron to distract referee Tim White. Angle brought the scepter in the ring, Jericho knocked it out of his hands and Stephanie picked up the scepter. As Jericho tried to apply the Walls of Jericho to Angle, Stephanie hit Jericho in the groin with the scepter and the referee never saw it. Angle capitalized on that with an Olympic Slam for the pinfall win at 5:28. Stephanie walked away before the pinfall took place.
Winner by pinfall: Kurt Angle
Analysis: *** A cheap win for Angle thanks to help from his friend Stephanie. That was well booked with a lot of drama in the final minute and a finish that was fitting for Angle. It also added more heat to the Jericho/Triple H rivalry with Stephanie causing Jericho to lose. Angle and Jericho are two of my favorite wrestlers of all time, so it’s fun to see what their early WWF days were like. Both guys were on the main shows for less than a year at this point.

Replays aired of Angle getting the cheap win over Jericho from before the break.
Angle went backstage celebrating the win. There was a table of food that he tossed all over and some of the food went onto a motorcycle. Mideon told Angle to look behind him and Mideon told him it was Taker’s motorcycle. Angle ran away. Angle got into a taxi and left the arena.
Let’s Hear from Commissioner Foley
Mick Foley, the WWF Commissioner, made his entrance to a good pop from the crowd. Foley talked about how he had a good time on Raw for 1 hour, 55 minutes until the end of the night. Foley spoke about Shane McMahon and Chris Benoit ruining the night. Foley said he wanted either one of these two to go down to that ring to explain themselves to him. Foley asked who had the guts to talk to him.
Chris Benoit walked out with a plain back t-shirt and his wrestling tights with fans booing him. Benoit got in the ring with Foley.
Foley talked about how three hours before Raw, Chyna was playing with Mick’s six-year-old daughter (that would be Noelle Foley) with Mick putting over Chyna for being a good person and his friend. Foley cued up footage from Raw showing Benoit putting the Crippler Crossface on Chyna. Foley told Benoit that he makes him sick, so he wants an explanation. Another clip aired from Raw that showed Benoit’s cheap attack on The Rock including the Crippler Crossface for about two minutes.
Foley told Benoit he is one of the best wrestlers he’s ever seen, but he does not see remorse, compassion or a sense of humor. Foley asked Benoit “WHY CHRIS WHY?”
Analysis: Listening to that Foley speech to Benoit gets me thinking about the horrific acts that Benoit committed seven years later. That’s the hard thing about these shows with Benoit in a featured role.
Benoit spoke about how he has no remorse, compassion or a sense of humor. Benoit said he’s the greatest technical wrestler in the world today and the greatest technical wrestler in the history of the WWF. Benoit told him to prove him wrong. Benoit said he has WWF gold on his mind and he’ll go through anyone or anything that stands in his way. Benoit wanted to be put in a title fight with the People’s Champion and the WWF Champion…The Rock. Benoit said that his actions will speak louder than words. The fans chanted “Rocky” after that.
Foley said that Benoit is damn good and he’ll think real hard about his little request. Edge and Christian showed up for an interruption. They were the WWF Tag Team Champions.
Christian told Benoit they are so proud of him. Edge told Benoit on Monday night he totally reeked of awesomeness. Edge also put over Benoit for being a fellow Canadian, which drew boos. Christian said it fills their hearts to see a Canadian that kicks as much ass (that was bleeped) as them and the Crossface rules. Christian bragged about how they are still the champions. Edge said since they are the tag team champions, it’s only fitting that Benoit should be the WWF Champion.
Foley said he likes Canada too, but it was hot there and they weren’t in Canada because they were in Fort Lauderdale (cheap pop). Foley said that he can tell the three of them need to spend more quality Canadian time together and he knows The Rock deserves a piece of Benoit. Foley said it will be a six-man (or six-person) tag team match with Benoit, Edge and Christian against Eddie Guerrero, Chyna and The Rock. The fans cheered to end the promo.
Analysis: It was a typical early show promo to set up a big match for later. That was probably Benoit’s longest promo in his WWE career up to that point because he was not known as a talker. He did fine in terms of explaining his actions even though it’s tough to watch. Foley was very effective as the Commish that wanted answers and he was perfect in his role as usual. E&C were entertaining as obnoxious heels.
Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley was shown standing in the backstage area waiting for Triple H.

Triple H was shown arriving in a limousine with Stephanie showing up to say that she just embarrassed Jericho. She explained that she was out there with Kurt Angle and Hunter wasn’t happy about her hanging out with Angle. They left.
Analysis: The long-term Triple H/Angle/Stephanie was built so well with a slow burn. I enjoy all the little segments like this that add to the story.
The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley) vs. D’Lo Brown and Chaz
Analysis: The Dudleys were faces. Brown and Chaz were heels teaming for the first time on Smackdown. Brown wasn’t going anywhere as a singles heel, Chaz was the former Headbanger Mosh (and Beaver Cleavage!) that was doing nothing, so WWE teamed them up. They would eventually be named Low Down although they didn’t reach the top of the tag team division.
Bubba with a sidewalk slam on Brown followed by elbows to the head. Bubba hit a belly to back suplex on Brown, but a splash missed and Chaz tagged in. Bubba with an elbow to the face followed by a senton splash off the middle ropes for two. Chaz did a leapfrog on D-Von, then he faked a right knee injury and that allowed Brown to cheap shot D-Von by sending him into the ring post. Chaz with a springboard attack to send D-Von to the floor and Brown hit a dive over the top onto D-Von n the floor. Brown hit a jumping side kick on D-Von and then he missed the Low Down frog splash. Bubba tagged in against Chaz with a back body drop and Bubba hit a Full Nelson Bomb on Brown. D-Von jumped off the top with a headbutt to the groin of Brown and D-Von went to get the table. Brown and D-Von battled on the floor. Bubba and Chaz collided into eachother in the ring. All four guys were down. Steven Richards’ music hit as he ran down to the ring to take the table to the back. Bubba realized the table was gone because he didn’t see what happened. Brown hit a flapjack on D-Von and Chaz hit a leg drop to the head for a two count. Brown jumped onto Bubba on the floor. Bubba whipped Brown into the ring post. Bubba went back into the ring and the Dudleys hit 3D on Chaz, who was under the ropes, but that was ignored. The Dudleys got the pinfall win at 6:58.
Winners by pinfall: The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley)
Analysis: **1/2 That was a few minutes longer than I was expecting. Even though Brown and Chaz lost, they looked good against one of the best teams in the Dudleys, so this was a case of trying to establish the Brown/Chaz team. This match also set up a new feud for the Dudleys since they weren’t happy about Richards taking their table. Brown and Chaz would continue to team for the rest of the year.
Steven Richards was interviewed by Kevin Kelly backstage. Richards said that there is no need for a table in a wrestling match ever and he will censor it. Richards claimed the television audience doesn’t know what’s good for them, but he does.

They showed Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins at ringside. They only displayed Thomas’ name. Thomas was a good player for many years, but Taylor was better and ended up as an NFL Hall of Famer.
Triple H and Stephanie McMahon went up to Commissioner Foley in his unique office. Hunter wanted a match with Jericho. Foley told him he can get him at Fully Loaded. Hunter kept on asking for Jericho, so Foley told him he’ll have a handicap elimination match and if Hunter wins, he can get Jericho on Raw. Hunter agreed to it.
Dean Malenko vs. Ivory and Jacqueline
Pre-match notes: Malenko was the Light Heavyweight Champion. He had two ladies with him. Malenko was a heel. The women were faces in this scenario and there was no reaction to them, so they piped in the fake crowd noise.
Malenko with a forearm to the back of Ivory and a hair whip on Jackie. Ivory with a snapmare into a headlock, but Malenko came back with a kick to the back. Jackie hit a cross body block off the top on Malenko and Ivory got a two count. The women pulled Malenko out of the ring and hit a double suplex on the floor. Back in the ring, Malenko with a double clothesline. Ivory and Jackie did a double leg pull with Dean selling a groin injury. Malenko with a forearm to Ivory and a spinning slam on Jackie. Malenko tried to suplex Ivory from the apron into the ring, but Crash Holly showed up, he grabbed Malenko’s leg and Ivory was on top for the pinfall win at 2:40.
Winners by pinfall: Ivory and Jacqueline
Analysis: * They worked hard with some decent spots, but it was tough to get into it. The finish was very cheap. Malenko didn’t seem happy to be a part of this.
After the match, Malenko fought with Crash at ringside. Ivory and Jacqueline held the Light Heavyweight Title, so Malenko went into the ring and the women hit Malenko in the head with the title.
Val Venis and Trish Stratus were shown walking backstage for a match up next.

Rikishi made his entrance with the Intercontinental Title for this title defense. RC Edge Cola was a sponsor. I don’t think I ever tried that in my life. Sorry RC Edge. Val Venis entered with the lovely Trish Stratus.
Intercontinental Championship: Rikishi vs. Val Venis (w/Trish Stratus)
Pre-match notes: Rikishi was the face champion while Venis was a heel. They had a rivalry leading into this match including some bloody brawls.
Rikishi with punches, then a hard whip into the turnbuckle and he tossed Venis out of the ring. Rikishi whipped Venis into the steel steps. Venis with a kick to the gut followed by a DDT. Venis up top, but Rikishi knocked him down and slammed him off the top rope. Rikishi with a leg drop for two. Rikishi whipped Venis into the turnbuckle with Venis crashing into Long by the turnbuckle. Rikishi followed up with a Samoan Drop. Trish waved for help, so Albert and Test went into the ring. Rikishi with a punch and a kick to the face, but Albert hit Rikishi in the back. Test went up top and hit an elbow drop on Rikishi. Venis covered, referee Teddy Long slowly crawled over for a two count with Rikishi pressing Venis onto Long. Scotty 2 Hotty and Grandmaster Sexay got into a brawl with Test and Albert to get rid of them. Rikishi with a splash on Venis and he seat on him, but there was no referee to count. Rikishi with a running back splash on Venis against the turnbuckle. Tazz ran in, he grabbed a camera and hit Rikishi in the head with it. Tazz tossed the camera down and left. Venis went up top, he jumped and connected with the Money Shot splash for the pinfall win at 4:19.
Winner by pinfall and New Intercontinental Champion: Val Venis
Analysis: *1/2 It was a cheap win thanks to the run-ins that started two minutes into the match and continued with Tazz as the difference maker. They booked Rikishi strong a lot of the time, so it’s not a surprise that he would lose the title in a cheap manner like this. Their feud would continue after this with another match at Fully Loaded.
Post match, Venis was handed the IC Title and he left with Trish. They replayed Tazz hitting Rikishi with the camera to cause the title change. Scotty and Sexay checked on Rikishi in the ring.

They replayed the key spots in the finish of the last match with Venis winning the IC Title from Rikishi.
The Trish led group of Venis, Test and Albert were shown celebrating in the locker room with champagne.
Hardcore Championship: Steve Blackman vs. Big Boss Man
Pre-match notes: Blackman was the champion and he was more of a face although there wasn’t much character development with him. Boss Man was a heel. They were trying to make it a more serious title by putting it on Blackman.
Boss Man tried an attack to start, but Blackman was ready with nunchucks. Boss Man sprayed a fire extinguisher in Blackman’s eyes to knock him down. Boss Man with a trash can lid to the head and then Blackman got a hold of the trash can lid leading to a shot to the chest and head. Boss Man with a Nunchuk to the groin of Blackman. Boss Man tried an attack with a trash can, then Blackman hit him with the trash can and got a two count. Boss Man with the trash can two times to knock Blackman out of the ring. Boss Man knocked Blackman down near the barricade. Al Snow showed up and threw some tray at Boss Man’s head. The fans cheered Snow helping out his former partner Blackman. Blackman with a kendo stick to the head of Boss Man and he pinned him on the floor to retain the title at 3:36.
Winner by pinfall: Steve Blackman
Analysis: *1/2 It was fine for the time given and Snow’s involvement was a way to continue Blackman’s reign as champion. They were trying to get away from the comedy aspects of the title that they had with Crash Holly and this gave Blackman something to do.
It back to the parking lot area where Mideon walked The Undertaker over to his motorcycle, which was messed up by Kurt Angle earlier. The Undertaker was not happy about it.

Kane made his entrance for a tag team match. The Undertaker was next to team with Kane and Taker walked out there without his motorcycle. They replayed Angle “accidentally” tossing food on the motorcycle. The team of Test and Albert entered along with Trish Stratus, who was in different attire from what she had on earlier.

Pre-match notes: Test and Albert were heels while Kane and Undertaker were faces.
Test with a clothesline on Taker, but Taker came back with a sidewalk slam for two because Albert broke up the pin. Test came back with a boot to the face of Taker for two. Take came back with a leaping DDT for two. Kane tagged in against Albert with punches and Albert with a pump kick to Kane. Albert with a suplex on Kane for two. Kane with a clothesline, Albert whipped Kane into the ropes, Test pulled the rope down and Kane went to the floor with a punch to Test. Kane with a neckbreaker on Albert using the ropes. Test tripped up Kane on the top rope to prevent an attack. Albert with a running splash and Test with a boot to the face of Kane. Taker knocked Test down outside the ring. Kane with a corner clothesline on Albert, whip into the turnbuckle and a belly to back suplex. Taker and Kane with a double team boot to the face of Albert. Kane with a Chokeslam on Albert for the pinfall win at 4:31.
Winners by pinfall: Kane and The Undertaker
Analysis: **1/4 It was a solid matchup featuring four big guys. Sometimes those kinds of matches can be shit, but they got through it. I thought it would be over in two minutes. It was no surprise that Kane and Taker won.
Post match, The Undertaker hit The Last Ride powerbomb on Test. Kane grabbed Stratus by the hair. Kane teased a Chokeslam, but Val Venis went into the ring to hit Kane in the back with the IC Title. The heels left while Kane got back up in the ring.

Triple H made his entrance with Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley, who was the Women’s Champion. They showed a clip from earlier in the night when Stephanie helped Kurt Angle beat Chris Jericho. The Kaientai duo of Taka Michinoku and Kaientai made their entrance with Hunter laughing about it. Their partner is the Brooklyn Brawler, who was one of the most notorious losers in WWE history.
Elimination Match: Brooklyn Brawler, Taka Michinoku and Funaki vs. Triple H (w/Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley)
Pre-match notes: Triple H was a heel while Brawler, Taka and Funaki were in a face role for this match.
The trio attacked Hunter with stomps and punches. Funaki with a headscissors takeover, Brawler with a neckbreaker and Michinoku with a missile dropkick. Brawler with a clothesline that sent Hunter out of the ring. Taka’s moonsault missed Hunter and took out Funaki on the floor. Hunter with a facebuster to the knee on Brawler, but Taka went back with a dropkick. Hunter launched Taka over the top to the floor. Funaki went for a DDT, Hunter blocked it and Hunter hit a Pedigree on Funaki to pin him.
Funaki has been eliminated
Michinoku jumped off the top rope with a cross body block, but Hunter moved and hit a Pedigree to pin him too.
Taka Michinoku has been eliminated
Hunter attacked Brawler against the turnbuckle, he put his boot to the throat, referee Earl Hebner wanted Hunter to back off, so Hunter pushed Hebner onto his ass. Lawler laughed about it. Chris Jericho went down to the ring and hit a bulldog on Hunter followed by a Lionsault off the ropes. The referee saw the whole thing, but he did nothing. Brawler covered and Hebner counted the pin to give Brawler the win! It went 3:25. The crowd popped big for the upset.
Winner by pinfall: Brooklyn Brawler
Analysis: ** It was a fun angle to have the Brooklyn Brawler pin Triple H because nobody expected that to happen even in a 3 on 1 scenario. I remember this angle well. It continued the story of Jericho being a thorn in Triple H’s side and always finding a way to humiliate Hunter as well Stephanie. The loss didn’t hurt Hunter since it was so cheap in a 3 on 1 match, plus the interference of Jericho. It popped the crowd, so it worked in that sense.
After a brief celebration from Brawler and Kaientai, Triple H went back into the ring for an attack. Hunter tossed Funaki and Taka out of the ring. Hunter attacked Brawler outside the ring by tossing him into the steel ring post. The fans chanted “Asshole” at Hunter, who tossed Michinoku into the barricade. Hunter whipped Funaki over the announce table. Brawler was bleeding from the head after the bump into the ring post. Hunter worked over Brawler with punches on the bloody forehead of Brawler. Hunter with a Pedigree on Brawler and he slapped him in the face. Hunter left with Stephanie.
Analysis: It was an effective way to have Hunter get his heat back by beating up the guys that beat him in cheap fashion.
Chris Jericho was shown walking in the parking lot where he went up to a limo driver. Jericho told the driver to take him to South Beach in Miami. Hunter and Stephanie saw this on the screen, so they went running to the back.

The replays aired showing Brooklyn Brawler pinning Triple H with Lawler pointing out that Earl Hebner saw it and did nothing about it. Jericho also left in Triple H’s limo.
A video package aired about Chris Benoit’s actions on Raw when he beat up Eddie Guerrero, Chyna and later The Rock as well. Benoit was getting the main event push, so he was booked to look dominant on Raw.
Eddie Guerrero and Chyna were interviewed by Kevin Kelly backstage. Eddie said that Chyna can hold her own, but there’s a certain line that you don’t cross. Eddie said that Benoit crossed the line, so I guess their friendship is over. Chyna said Benoit is wrong if he thinks he can do that again.
The Rock was interviewed by Jonathon Coachman with the crowd screaming at the sight of Rock on the screen. Rock said finally The Rock has come back…home. Rock said when Benoit attacked him last week, Benoit thought he stepped into the big leagues, but Rock said he had no idea of the world he stepped into. Rock said that Benoit gets the job done and the Crippler Crossface hurts like hell, but technically Rock is going to whip his ass all over Fort Lauderdale. That led to loud “Rocky” chants as Rock ended it with his “if ya smell” routine.
Analysis: Tremendous promo from Rock as usual.

The participants entered for the main event. Chris Benoit was out first followed by Edge and Christian. Eddie Guerrero and Chyna got a nice ovation. No flowers from Eddie this time because they are all serious this week. The Rock got a massive ovation as he walked out there with the WWF Championship in his hands. Rock had a staredown with Benoit as Rock posed on the ropes.
The Rock, Chyna and Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Benoit, Edge and Christian
Pre-match notes: The Rock was the babyface WWF Champion, Guerrero was a babyface European Champion and Chyna was also a face. Benoit was a heel while Edge and Christian were heel Tag Team Champions.
There were only about seven minutes left in the show when the match began. Edge attacked Guerrero from behind, Guerrero came back with a headscissors takeover, but Benoit went into the ring with a clothesline. There was a lot of blood in the ring from Brooklyn Brawler earlier in the show. Guerrero with a dropkick on Benoit, who came back with an elbow to the head and Benoit with a backbreaker on Guerrero for two. Christian with a reverse DDT on Guerrero. Christian with a powerslam on Guerrero for a two count. Edge tagged in against Guerrero and hit a suplex. The fans were chanting for The Rock. Benoit went back into the match with a belly to back suplex on Guerrero. Benoit with a boot to the face of Guerrero and he wanted a Powerbomb, but Guerrero hit a hurricanrana. Rock got the hot tag as the crowd exploded in cheers and Rock with a Samoan Drop on Edge as well as a spinebuster on Christian. Rock wanted the People’s Elbow, but Chyna wanted to go into the match, Rock punched the guys off the apron and didn’t do the elbow. Rock tagged Chyna, she went into the ring and hit a Powerbomb on Christian for the pinfall win at 4:36.
Winners by pinfall: The Rock, Chyna and Eddie Guerrero
Analysis: ** It was a fun match with a hot crowd, but I wish they got more time because there were some great wrestlers in this match. It was the main event, so they should have found more time for this match and cut out some of the other stuff that was less important. No People’s Elbow from Rock was shocking because the place would have exploded, but I guess they decided that Chyna getting the win was the better way to end it.
Post match, Rock and Benoit continued their trash talk. Shane McMahon attacked Rock with a punch to the back. Shane left the ring and Rock chased after him. Edge and Christian attacked Eddie and Chyna from behind. Benoit slapped on the Crippler Crossface on Chyna again, just like he did on Raw. That led to Rock running back into the ring as he chased after Shane. Rock punched Christian out of the ring and Rock hit a Rock Bottom on Edge. Benoit left with Shane, so Rock never got his hands on Benoit. The show ended with Rock staring at Benoit and Shane.
Analysis: That was booked well because they didn’t give us Rock’s revenge on Benoit yet. A slow build to it was the right way to go.

Triple H had a good performance all night too.
The Scoreboard
This episode gets a 6 out of 10.
There was good storyline progression throughout the show especially with the Triple H/Jericho rivalry, but the in-ring action was a bit disappointing. The matches in the first hour were pretty good while the second hour was below average. Val Venis winning the IC Title over Rikishi in cheap fashion was well booked. I like how Benoit was booked as a strong heel that avoided an attack from The Rock as well.
