The John Report: WWE Smackdown 11/22/19 Review
Welcome to another WWE Friday Night Smackdown review right here on TJRWrestling. This is the last edition of Smackdown before Sunday’s Survivor Series pay-per-view event. They have advertised a big six-man tag team match with Roman Reigns teaming up with Mustafa Ali and Shorty G vs. “King” Baron Corbin, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode. Plus, Daniel Bryan will confront “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt. In addition to that, it’s likely that Raw and NXT superstars will appear since they are all in Chicago this weekend for the “battle of brand supremacy” that we’re supposed to care about this weekend and then forget about most of the year. The updated lineup for Survivor Series is at the bottom of this post. Let’s get to the show.

The Smackdown wrestlers were shown backstage in the Allstate Arena with all of them wearing blue Smackdown t-shirts. Baron Corbin, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode were standing there. Roman Reigns spoke in front of the group with Shorty G and Mustafa Ali by his side. Reigns said they were going to let in everybody from Raw and NXT if they show up. Ali G pushed the button to raise the garage door. Sasha Banks spoke up to say that they wait for nobody and the women’s division is going to take care of things right now.
Analysis: It sets the tone for what’s to come during the show with the Raw and NXT wrestlers showing up. The cheesiness of the wrestlers all wearing matching shirts will end after Sunday. It just looks silly.
The Smackdown intro video aired. The pyro went off in Allstate Arena in Chicago, which is the host to four straight nights of WWE events. We were welcomed to the show by Michael Cole and Corey Graves as the commentary team.
Let’s Hear from Sasha Banks
Sasha Banks made her entrance with Cole screaming about how “it’s boss time.” Banks led the Smackdown team down to the ring, which meant Carmella, Lacey Evans, Nikki Cross and Dana Brooke were with her.
Banks said this is our ring and this is our show. Banks said they are ready to put their differences from behind to take care of business because nobody will come after them. Banks trash talked NXT’s women and said she knows Team Raw is there tonight. Banks told them to come out and fight right now.
That led to Charlotte Flair making her entrance as the captain of Team Raw that also included Natalya, Sarah Logan, Asuka and Kairi Sane with all of them in red Raw t-shirts. Flair said it’s the welcome wagon, which drew no reaction. Flair said that Raw would have kicked down the doors anyway. The Raw women were on the apron across from the Smackdown women. Flair challenged Banks to a singles match for old times sake.
The NXT women made their entrance as well (they entered through the crowd) and they got a big ovation from the crowd. The five NXT women were Rhea Ripley, Teagan Nox, Toni Storm, Mia Yim and Candice LeRae. Ripley said that since the captains Banks and Flair want to go one on one, then add Ripley to it as well since she’s a captain. There were referees in the ring try to maintain order.
That led to a brawl between the 15 women in the elimination match at Survivor Series on Sunday and instead of showing the action, they went to a break.
Analysis: It was an entertaining opening segment, albeit a predictable one. At least we finally got to learn who the NXT women are at Survivor Series as well, so that’s good. They are giving us a triple threat match two days before we are getting several triple threat matches. I liked the promo from Banks and Flair while Ripley comes off as a badass. The fans loved NXT the most as usual.

The match began after the break. The ring was surrounded by the other women in the women’s Survivor Series elimination match.
Sasha Banks (Smackdown) vs. Charlotte Flair (Raw) vs. Rhea Ripley (NXT)
Flair and Ripley took down Banks with double boots to the face. Ripley and Flair battled with Ripley taking control with shoulder tackles to the ribs. Ripley with a kick, but Flair came back with a boot to the face. Flair missed a corner charge, Ripley moved and Flair hit the turnbuckle. Banks went back into the ring with a Backstabber for a two count on Ripley. There were two clotheslines from Ripley on Banks followed by a dropkick to knock Banks out of the ring. Banks with a kick that knocked Ripley down on the floor. Flair got back into it by shoving Banks into teammate Cross. That led to Banks arguing with Cross, so the other Smackdown women had to separate them. Flair went up top and hit a moonsault onto Banks and Ripley where she really only connects with her arms. That led to a break five minutes into the match.

The match returned with Ripley getting a two count on Flair. Ripley worked over Banks against the turnbuckle, but Banks came back with a meteora double knee attack on Ripley. Flair came back with a Natural Selection neckbreaker on Banks for two with Ripley breaking up the pin. Flair had a bloody nose/mouth I think from when she landed the moonsault earlier. Ripley with a kick to the head, Flair avoided a standing dropkick and Flair got the Natural Selection on Ripley. Banks got a rollup on Banks for two. Flair slapped on the Figure Eight submission on Banks, but Ripley went into the ring and hooked the arms of Flair to keep her down for the three count for the pinfall win after 10 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Rhea Ripley
Analysis: ***1/4 It’s a big win for Ripley against two of the biggest women’s wrestlers in WWE. The finish was very creative with Ripley hooking the arms while Flair had her submission on. I’ve never seen a Flair match end like that, so that was cool. They worked well together with Flair/Ripley as taller women while Banks got in her cheap shots as the heel in the match. I think WWE clearly has high hopes for Ripley in the future, which is smart since she’s got a great look and at 23 years old, her best years are ahead of her.
The NXT women left. The Smackdown women brawled with Raw in the ring, the Smackdown women sent Raw out of the ring and then Raw went back in the ring. The fans chanted “NXT” as their five women watched from the stage. The NXT women stood tall in the ring.
Analysis: I thought all the women involved in the match and segment did a good job of showing intensity to make us care more about Survivor Series on Sunday. Does it matter who wins their match? Nope, but at least they are trying to make us care.
The trio of King Corbin, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode were chatting backstage. Corbin said if Raw and NXT show up, they’ll get out of there and then they’ll go after Reigns and his partners. Sami Zayn showed up with a black bag while Corbin said Zayn is the most annoying person he’s ever met. Corbin told Zayn to call him annoying to his face in the ring right now. Zayn walked out to the ring.
Sami Zayn made his entrance along with Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura for something after the break.

Bayley, the Smackdown Women’s Champion, was interviewed by Kayla Braxton in the interview area backstage. Bayley said she’s the only woman in this match that has won the Smackdown, Raw, NXT and Women’s Tag Team Titles. Bayley said Becky Lynch knows Bayley will be ready and Shayna Baszler seems to only show up when Bayley’s back is turned. Bayley said if Shayna is done hiding in the shadows, Bayley is here and she’s ready.
Analysis: Good intensity by Bayley. She had better dialogue to say than she does some weeks.
Sami Zayn was in the ring with Shinsuke Nakamura while adding that Baron Corbin is afraid of him and Nakamura because everybody is afraid of Nakamura. Zayn said you can’t call him annoying and if there’s one word to describe him it’s…stud. Zayn said for as big of a stud that he is, Nakamura is an even bigger stud. Zayn said that Nakamura has been so studly as IC Champion over the past few months, Zayn got him something. Zayn opened the bag to reveal a brand new Intercontinental Title.

Analysis: I think it looks good. With that said, I didn’t really mind the old IC Title. I didn’t get a sense that fans were clamoring for a change either. I’ve never been the type to complain about the looks of titles although I will say the butterfly Divas Title was probably the worst looking title WWE has ever had. It was ridiculous. This one is fine and I think a reason to change is to sell more replica titles. It makes sense to me. I’ll get used to the look of it.
Zayn and Nakamura did trash talk towards AJ Styles and Roderick Strong, who Nakamura is facing at Survivor Series on Sunday.
The Undisputed Era foursome of NXT Champion Adam Cole, NXT North American Champion Roderick Strong and NXT Tag Team Champions Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish went into the ring. Zayn led Nakamura out of the ring as fans chanted “undisputed” for the NXT champions.
Adam Cole said that on Sunday at Survivor Series, they will wipe the floor with Raw and Smackdown and that is undisputed.
The New Day duo of Big E and Kofi Kingston made their entrance with the Smackdown Tag Team Titles. Big E is not wearing a Smackdown shirt like everybody else on Smackdown so far, but Kingston is. Kingston said that last week, the Undisputed Era took off so fast that New Day wasn’t able to say goodbye. Kingston said he sees them right now, which means they can settle it here in a match right now.
Roderick Strong asked if it’s the two of them against the four of them and said sure. Big E said it will be the two of them teaming up with…the Heavy Machinery duo of Tucker and Otis, who made their entrance. Tucker wasn’t in a Smackdown shirt, but Otis was. That led to a break so they can do the tag team match.
Analysis: This idea of wrestlers doing promos leading to challenges for a match seems like a common theme on the show this week. It’s fine to do once in a while.

The holla holla holla tag team match began. They should have brought Teddy Long back for this show just to make matches official.
Big E, Kofi Kingston, Tucker and Otis vs. The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong)
Big E was dominant early on with a belly to belly suplex on Fish, a splash on the apron and more belly to belly suplexes on the floor. Kingston battled Cole with a knee to the ribs, Kingston kicked Cole out of the ring and Strong made a blind tag to become the legal man with a backbreaker. O’Reilly and Fish hit a double team suplex on Kingston. The heels continued to work over Kingston on their half of the ring with Kingston managing a two count on Strong, but then Strong hit a dropkick on Kingston. O’Reilly worked over Kingston with strikes, knees and a running knee strike. Nakamura and Zayn were watching this match from the ramp. Kingston with two boots to the face of Strong, Kingston was trying to get his balance on the top rope and Strong hit a dropkick on Kingston to knock him off the turnbuckle onto Tucker on the floor. Otis checked on Kingston, Big E shoved Otis and Tucker broke that up as the show went to break.

The match returned with Kingston still as the face in peril until Kingston hit a dropkick off the middle ropes on Fish. The big man Otis got the tag as the crowd popped for him and Otis cleaned house with shoulder tackles, clotheslines, corner splashes and a flapjack into a slam on Strong. O’Reilly kicked the leg, Otis hulked up, O’Reilly with more strikes, Otis with a headbutt and an overhead throw. Otis with a running splash in the corner on Cole and O’Reilly. Otis teased the Caterpillar, Cole was pulled out of the ring, Otis with a shoulder tackle on O’Reilly and Tucker with a side slam on O’Reilly for two. Strong tagged in, Tucker with a kick and a double underhook suplex that sent Strong out of the ring. Tucker with a corner splash on Strong followed by a sidewalk slam for two. Tucker went up top and hit a perfect moonsault on Strong for two with Cole breaking it up. Cole with a kick on Big E, but Big E with a belly to belly suplex. Big E dumped Fish and O’Reilly out of the ring. Kingston ran the ropes, Cole tripped him up, Big E was taken out on the other side and a high/low kick took Big E down. There was a high/low kick on Kingston as well. Tucker took out Cole and Strong with clotheslines. Otis went back with a spinning body slam on O’Reilly followed by Otis hitting the Caterpillar into the elbow drop on O’Reilly. That drew a big pop. Cole with a superkick on Tucker and Strong with a jumping knee strike on Tucker for the pinfall win. It went about 14 minutes.
Winners by pinfall: The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong)
Analysis: ***1/4 It was a very good tag team match with Kingston as the face in peril for most of it and then the action broke down from there. I admit there was a point in the match at the end where I lost track of who is legal and normally in WWE matches, it’s easy to keep track of. It’s not the same when watching AEW matches. I think the work was good, though. Everybody in this match had a chance to shine and show what they can do. Strong getting the win gives him positive momentum going into his match at Survivor Series, which is cool. I am really impressed by how popular Heavy Machinery has become. The fans were popping loud for Otis’ spots and Tucker showed off his athleticism with a great looking moonsault too. They have a bright future as a team.
The Undisputed Era celebrated the win in the ring.
Strong went up the ramp and had a staredown with Nakamura. AJ Styles showed up to go over both guys that he is against at Survivor Series. Zayn saved his buddy Nakamura by hitting Styles and Strong in the back with a steel chair. Undisputed Era checked on Strong, so Zayn and Nakamura left.
The announcers promoted Survivor Series on Sunday night.
Daniel Bryan was shown walking backstage because he’s going to “summon” Bray Wyatt.

AJ Styles was standing at the side of the stage with a microphone in his hand. Styles ripped on Chicago to get some heat. The fans chanted “CM Punk” at him and Styles said he would mop the floor with him. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson were with Styles to remind us they are The OC. Styles had some quick trash talk for Shinsuke Nakamura and Roderick Strong to end it.
Analysis: It was just a quick promo from Styles. He handled the “CM Punk” chants well. I’m surprised there haven’t been more of those chants in the show. I expect the CM Punk chants at Survivor Series, especially in the direction of Seth Rollins.
Daniel Bryan Calls Out Bray Wyatt
Daniel Bryan entered to a nice ovation and “yes” chants although Bryan did not join in the “yes” chants with the fans. Bryan said if people want to know why he is going to summon Bray Wyatt, here’s why. That led to a video package summarizing the Wyatt/Bryan feud over the last few weeks, which started after a random backstage attack by The Fiend on Bryan.
Bryan said he didn’t come out there to chant yes, to lecture us about climate change or play with puppets – Bryan is there to summon Bray Wyatt. Bryan said he won’t pretend what’s going on in Wyatt’s mind, but Bryan said that Bray can come out there to talk about the issues they have or they can fight right now. Bryan said he won’t be another name to add to your hit list or another toy to add to your collection…and that’s when the lights went out.
When the lights came on, Bryan looked around and there was nobody out there. Bryan asked if Bray wanted to disappoint all these people and said come out and fight. The Miz showed up for an interruption in his ring gear. Bryan said if there’s one thing worse than The Fiend, it’s The Miz. Miz gave his sunglasses to a kid at ringside.
The Miz got in the ring with Bryan saying that based on Bryan’s behavior last week, it’s clear Miz is a professional and he said Bryan disrespected Miz on his own show. Bryan said he doesn’t like Miz or respect him. Miz said he can’t wait for The Fiend to tear Bryan apart at Survivor Series. Miz said he’s tried to make Bryan better since he started in WWE, then said he thought he could snap some sense into him and Miz said he’ll just do this…Miz slapped Bryan. That led to a break.
Analysis: I like that Bryan and Miz still hate eachother even though they are both faces now. I think it’s cool that they still have issues going back a decade and just because they are faces now doesn’t mean they have to be friends. It’s a fine way to set up a match. Well done. The Miz has had nothing interesting to do on the show in several months now.

The match began during the break. The third match on this show set up that way. That’s not a complaint. I don’t mind it during this Survivor Series season.
The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan
The action spilled to the floor with Bryan knocking down Miz with a knee strike. Cole did a good job of telling their story noting they have had issues with eachother for a decade. When they went back into the ring, Miz connected with a knee to the ribs and a running kick to the face. Miz with another kick to the face. The chest of Miz was red due to chops from Bryan as Miz hit a fourth kick to the face. Bryan came back with kicks, chops and two corner running dropkicks. Miz came back with a clothesline against the turnbuckle. Miz off the top with nothing, Bryan grabbed the arm going for a submission, Miz fought it off, so Bryan hit a running clothesline. Bryan went up top, but Miz crotched him on there to prevent Bryan from hitting a move. Bryan blocked a superplex attempt, headbutt by Bryan and Bryan hit a missile dropkick off the top. Bryan kicked Miz in the chest three times followed by the roundhouse kick to the head that usually doesn’t connect, but it did here. Bryan did a “yes” signal, but then the lights went out again in the arena. When the lights were on, Miz was out of the corner of the ring and The Fiend was there along with the red spotlight. It went about six minutes.
Match Result: No Contest
Analysis: ** The work was fine, but with no finish it’s hard to talk about it that match. I think most people expected an appearance from The Fiend in that spot. It looked like Bryan was about to bring back the “Yes” chant and then was interrupted, so that’s something they can tease down the road.
Bryan charged at The Fiend, who caught Bryan and gave him the Mandible Claw submission that took Bryan down to the mat. There was a flashing spotlight on them. The show went to break.
Analysis: That’s it? I think they could have done more to make us care about the match at Survivor Series. Maybe do a promo with Bray in the Firefly Fun House and then have The Fiend show up. This just felt very uncreative. It was basic. I think The Fiend will retain the Universal Title at Survivor Series. A title change would be very surprising. From a performance standpoint, Bryan was outstanding all night from the promo to the match to the way he reacted to The Fiend. Bryan is a special talent.

The announcers talked about Survivor Series again while mentioning “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt vs. Daniel Bryan.
Shayna Baszler made her entrance with the NXT Women’s Championship and she was by herself. Baszler said that Bayley thinks that Baszler only attacks her from behind and said that Bayley hasn’t been getting the message. Baszler said she’s standing in the ring calling Bayley out.
That led to Bayley showing up with an attack from behind as they got into a brawl in the ring. Bayley attacked first, Baszler fought back, Bayley kicked her off and Baszler slapped on the Kirifuda Clutch on Bayley at ringside. Bayley drove Baszler into the barricade. To get out of the hold. Bayley shoved Baszler into the ring post. Bayley backed up the ramp. Baszler had an intense look on her face as the fans chanted “Becky” and there was no sign of her. Baszler just stared at Bayley as Bayley went to the back.
Analysis: It was fine. The segment was short. When it’s two heels like that, it’s not as interesting because the fans weren’t rooting for either woman. I was surprised there was no sign of Becky Lynch since she’s against Bayley and Baszler at Survivor Series.
They replayed a clip from last week with Ali and Shorty G beating Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode to keep their spots on Team Smackdown at Survivor Series.
Mustafa Ali made his entrance in his hometown of Chicago. Ali had a Chicago flag with him as well and the fans gave him a big ovation when it was announced he’s from Chicago. Shorty G was up next for the team with Cole noting that Shorty and his wife welcomed their third child this week – a son. Graves had a joke that the son is already the same height as Shorty. Roman Reigns was up last for the team as Cole screamed about “The Big Dog” as he always does. Reigns posed with his fist on the ramp and there was no pyro like there has been in the past. When Reigns posed on the turnbuckle, that’s when the pyro went off.

The intros for the heel team took place with Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode at ringside. “King” Baron Corbin made his entrance to loud boos from the crowd. Corbin was brought down to the ring on a throne of sorts with six guys carrying him down to the ring.
Roman Reigns, Shorty G and Mustafa Ali vs. “King” Baron Corbin, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode
Reigns was on fire to start the match with a Drive By kick on Corbin and he focused on Roode. Ziggler managed to get a cheap shot and Corbin sent Reigns ribs first into the barricade. Roode drove Reigns back first into the side of the ring apron where there were LED boards. Reigns fought back, Shorty got the tag and hit two suplexes back on Roode and Ziggler. Shorty was sent to the apron, Roode and Corbin grabbed him and they slammed Shorty back first onto the announce table at ringside. Reigns, Ali and the referee checked on Shorty to sell it as a big move.

The match returned with about ten minutes left in the show as Ziggler hit a DDT on Reigns, who was the legal man for his team. I’m surprised Reigns wasn’t on the apron ready for the hot tag. Ali was on the apron while Shorty was still down selling. Reigns hit a Superman Punch on Ziggler. Ali got a big pop in his hometown as he got the tag against Corbin. Ali with two kicks, Corbin pushed him away, Ali with a jumping kick and an X-Factor on Corbin. Ali with a spin kick on Ziggler and a suicide dive sent Ziggler into the announce table. Ali with a somersault dive onto Corbin on the floor. Back in the ring, Ali avoided a Chokeslam attempt and hit a Tornado DDT on Corbin. Ali went up top, but Roode tripped him up. Roode gave Shorty a spinebuster on the floor. Reigns took out Roode with a Superman Punch and Ziggler hit a superkick on Reigns. Ali was still up top, Ziggler shoved him down and Corbin hit the Deep Six slam for the pinfall after eight minutes. Corbin actually won a match with that move? That’s rare.
Winners by pinfall: “King” Baron Corbin, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode
Analysis: **1/2 The match was just average. We only got to see five minutes due to the commercial. I thought it would be better. I’m surprised Reigns didn’t win, but obviously it was somebody other than Reigns that took the fall. It was Ali, who is from Chicago and of course, they had him lose because that’s what WWE does where people lose in their hometown. Corbin winning with the Deep Six slam is rare. I have reviewed dozens of that man’s matches this decade and that move almost always gets a two count, but it won it for him here. That surprised me a bit. The offensive moves from Ali were the highlight of the match.
There were about seven minutes left in the show. Reigns took out Corbin with a Superman Punch.
The music of Seth Rollins hit and Rollins led the Raw roster out to ringside as they walked in through the crowd. The Raw guys had red shirts on. The fans chanted “CM Punk” at Rollins, but it didn’t last long or it was silenced. They built up to a Rollins staredown with his buddy Reigns. That led to punches and then everybody from Raw went after the Smackdown guys.
Braun Strowman’s music hit and he ran around the ring to knock down Raw guys with the running shoulder tackles. The rest of the Smackdown roster spilled out to the ring and they got into a brawl. There were NXT chants from the fans.
The NXT roster was shown arriving through the parking lot on a jeep driven by Road Dogg that also had Triple H, Shawn Michaels and wrestlers were with them. That looked cool. The wrestlers went down to the ring for the brawl between the three rosters.
The brawl between the wrestlers took place in the ring, around ringside and the announcers were screaming about it saying they have never seen anything like this. Really? It happens every year. There were a lot of guys out there. It’s hard to guess how many of them there were. Rollins was brawling with Corbin by the announce table and others were going after them. Keith Lee was in the ring and he hit a Spirit Bomb on Montez Ford.
Braun Strowman went into the ring with Keith Lee for a staredown. The credits appeared on the screen as Strowman and Lee backed into corners. They each took out guys with shoulder tackles. Strowman faced off with Lee, they got into a slugfest and then the ring was filled with wrestlers and that’s how the show ended.
Analysis: That was the predictable ending to the show. We have seen those wild brawls on Raw, Smackdown and NXT over the last month, so of course that’s how it was going to end Smackdown this week when all the rosters are in Chicago for the weekend. I was a bit surprised they didn’t have a spot where guys like Keith Lee and others did dives onto wrestlers outside the ring, but we have seen that before recently. It would have popped the crowd if Ricochet did something like that. I liked the Strowman/Lee showdown at the end because I have high hopes for Lee in WWE and seeing him face off with Braun like that is great for him. It’s a fun way to end it due to all the action going on. It was fine with me.

Final Thoughts
I give this week’s Smackdown a 7 out of 10.
It’s a hard show to rate because there wasn’t a standout match necessarily, but I liked the ongoing theme of promoting Survivor Series all night long. They did a good job of building the Survivor Series matches. Plus, we got some unique matches like the women’s triple threat and the eight-man tag team match. I thought the main event could have been better, but they were not given enough time to have a memorable match. The Wyatt/Bryan stuff was very basic and I felt like they should have done something more creative with them. The new IC Title should get people talking whether they like the design or not.
The good thing is I wasn’t bored. The two hours just flew by and I think fans in attendance were interested most of the night due to the chaotic nature of the show. The ending was the right way to go home on the last Smackdown before Survivor Series. Predictable? Sure, but if the show ended without a brawl then some fans would complain that it was a weak ending. This was an exciting conclusion to the show, so I’m cool with it.
No Holds Barred for the WWE Championship: Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Rey Mysterio
