The John Report: WWE Smackdown 08/06/21 Review
Welcome to this week’s WWE Smackdown review on TJRWrestling.
Before I begin, I wanted to provide a bit of a website update as well as a personal writing update. We have gone through some changes here at TJRWrestling over the last week or so. In addition to writing many reviews on the site, I used to post several news stories per week as well. In the last week, I haven’t posted a single news story and I’m happy about that because I can focus on writing reviews, retro content, columns/blogs, and whatever else comes to mind. Essentially, we are working with another team of writers to help us grow because my main mission at TJRWrestling is to build a website that is full of great content that makes our website visitors (that would be you) want to come back for more. I’m not going to go into the intricacies of the deal because that’s private, but I can say it’s going to lead to even more writing from me. I already review WWE Raw, Smackdown & NXT and AEW Dynamite every week. Starting next week, I’m adding the AEW Rampage show on Friday nights to my reviewing plate (that will probably be a Saturday morning post). In addition to that, I’m still going to post at least one WWE retro PPV review every week, there will be more classic content posted and I brought back the Canton’s Corner blog this past Wednesday too. In addition to that, I’ll probably do things like Q&As and list articles more regularly. On top of all that, I am working on a top-secret project as well. I can’t share what it is yet, but I should be able to share more info in a couple of months. Thanks to the news writers we have, I have more freedom to do other types of writing, which is what I want to do.
As for the website TJRWrestling, we are slowly working on some design changes, specifically to make it more mobile-friendly. Unfortunately, I think we are removing the comment section under posts because those tend to slow websites down and there just weren’t that many comments even though we are getting a lot of traffic. A lot of people prefer Facebook or Twitter to comment on things anyway, which is fine with me. I also expect our team of writers to continue putting out some great content. Perhaps we’ll add more writers in the future, but for right now I think we’re full. On a personal note, I’m as excited as ever to keep on writing about pro wrestling. I haven’t lost the passion for this after two decades and the last 12 years doing this full time. Thank you for your continued support. It means the world to me. Here’s hoping for an eventful rest of August in the world of professional wrestling (I think it will be a lot of fun) and a strong end to 2021 as well. It’s Smackdown time.

The show began with a shot of the crowd in Tampa, which is clearly one of WWE’s favorite cities. Smackdown is sponsored by Progressive as usual. The announce team of Michael Cole and Pat McAfee were on hand to call the action.
Let’s Hear from Sasha Banks
Sasha Banks made her entrance in some non-wrestling gear looking stylish as always. Banks was greeted with some boos from the crowd.
Banks said that the “boss is back in business” so It’s Boss Time on Friday Night Smackdown. Banks said that she came back for her spotlight that she deserves, which led to boos from the crowd. Banks said that it was the spotlight she created and she will never let somebody steal her spotlight ever again.
There was a video package showing Banks turning on Bianca Belair last week after they won a tag team match. Banks beat up Belair for several minutes and Banks posed with the Smackdown Women’s Title that she last held at WrestleMania when Belair beat Banks.
Banks laughed at the footage saying she exposed Belair and it was so easy. Banks said she decided to make a statement to rescue Belair last week and said that Belair would be nothing without Banks. Sasha said that Bianca was crying at WrestleMania because she was standing in the ring with the greatest of all time. Banks said there was no thank you coming out of her mouth. Banks said she was thinking about Belair’s disrespect week after week. Banks said she is back to make Bianca pay, which drew boos from the crowd.
Bianca Belair made her entrance as the Smackdown Women’s Champion with the fans cheering for her. Belair said that Banks won’t be standing when Belair gets in that ring. Belair said that the last time she checked, Banks was literally begging Belair to choose her after Royal Rumble so they could make history at WrestleMania. Belair said that Banks just doesn’t want Belair to shine, but Belair is shining and representing. When Banks got into the ring, Banks left the ring and Belair said what is Banks going to do, take another four months off? Good line! Banks said she can do whatever she wants. Banks was standing on the announce table and Belair said that Banks was one of the best ever. Belair said that if Banks wants this then it’s on.
Zelina Vega walked down to the ring saying this isn’t happening right now. Zelina was wearing big heels so she could see over the top rope as she stood on the apron. Vega said that before Banks swooped in like the vulture that she is, Belair accepted Vega’s challenge. Banks wondered what Belair was going to do. Belair told Banks she will see her at SummerSlam. Belair told Vega that she will fight her tonight. Belair’s music played to put an end to that.
Analysis: Good promo work by Banks as always. Banks is one of the best talkers among the female roster, especially when she’s a heel. Belair is better at promos like this when she’s talking to people instead of doing a monologue. The fans were fired up for the promos between Banks and Belair, so I think there will be a lot of interest in their SummerSlam match. As for Vega, she hasn’t won a match this year, yet she has this gimmick where she’s the most confident woman out there and I think they need to give her some wins to give Vega more credibility.
A graphic was shown saying Bianca Belair will defend the Smackdown Women’s Championship against Zelina Vega on Smackdown. (It ended up being a non-title later in the show.)
A progressive Match Flo showed a replay of Rey Mysterio winning a singles match over Jimmy Uso last week thanks to Dominik’s help because they cheated like The Usos did in the past.
Rey & Dominik Mysterio were shown talking backstage with Rey saying they had to be more strategic. Rey said he didn’t want to risk losing momentum by Dominik facing Jey Uso tonight. Dominik laughed and said he didn’t need Rey’s help.
The Usos, who are the Smackdown Tag Team Champions, made their entrance for Jey’s singles match.

The Mysterios entered for a match with Dominik in action. The Usos vs. The Mysterios was announced for SummerSlam earlier in the week.
Dominik Mysterio (w/Rey Mysterio) vs. Jey Uso (w/Jimmy Uso)
Jey hit a shoulder tackle to start the match, Dominik with a leapfrog and then a dropkick. Dominik jumped off the ropes leading to an armdrag across the ring. Jey hit a backbreaker followed by a body slam and Jey decked Dominik with an uppercut punch leading to Dominik rolling to the floor. Dominik fought back with a forearm, Dominik to the apron and a dropkick sent Jey into the barricade. Dominik slid under the bottom rope with a sunset flip Powerbomb into the barricade! That looked great and a move that Rey has done many times in his career.

Jey worked over Dominik with a chinlock as we saw a replay of the action during the break when Jimmy got a cheap shot. Jey hit a lifting neckbreaker for a two count. Jey charged at Dominik against the turnbuckle, Dominik moved and Dominik fought out of a Samoan Drop leading to a neckbreaker for two. Dominik hit a springboard moonsault onto a standing Jey for two. Jey went for an enziguri kick, Dominik moved and Dominik used his legs to send Jey into the turnbuckle. Dominik set up Jey by the ropes, Dominik hit a 619 kick (he goes on the left side while Rey goes on the right) and Rey hit a senton on Jimmy on the floor. Jey avoided a splash from Dominik and Jey hit a superkick. Jey went up top and hit an Uso Splash for the pinfall after nine minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Jey Uso
Analysis: *** Good match with both guys hitting big moves while Rey took out Jimmy on the floor, but Dominik wasn’t able to get the win. That’s because WWE loves 50/50 booking, so Rey winning over Jimmy last week meant that Jey had to win this week over Dominik. I don’t love that kind of booking, but WWE fans are used to it. Dominik hitting that sunset flip on the floor was the best move of the match. I also really liked Jey’s superkick before the finish because Dominik sold it so well. It looked devastating. Dominik keeps getting better and working against The Usos regularly will help him as he moves forward in his career.
They showed a replay of Seth Rollins beating up Edge last week with a cheap attack that also involved a camera to the head. Rollins said if he can’t be Universal Champion then neither can Edge.
Edge was shown walking backstage with Megan Morant showing up for an interview. Edge said that Rollins was a selfish bastard. Edge said that their issues go back way further back than the last few weeks. Edge said that when Seth gets there, he can meet him in the ring and Edge can show him what a rotten, selfish bastard that Edge can be.
Analysis: I have written in the past that Edge vs. Rollins is one of my favorite matches that is likely for SummerSlam. It’s not official yet, but it will be soon. (It was official later in the night.)
Rick Boogs was on stage to rock with the one true king of WWE, King Nakamura. That led to McAfee freaking out because he loves the music stylings of Boogs for the Nakamura entrance. McAfee was dancing on the announce table. Nakamura faces Apollo Crews up next in what they are calling a Champions Contenders Match instead of calling it a Non-Title Match like us sane people do.

There were images shown of The Rock’s new movie Jungle Cruiser being the number one movie and John Cena’s movie Suicide Squad is out this weekend with strong reviews. Good for both. I think I might see Suicide Squad this weekend. They said Cena will be back on Smackdown next week.
Apollo Crews made his entrance with the big man Commander Azeez by his side. Last week on Smackdown, Nakamura pinned Crews in a six-man tag team match.
Apollo Crews (w/Commander Azeez) vs. King Nakamura (w/Rick Boogs)
Nakamura with a jumping kick to the face as Crews was running the ropes. Crews lifted Nakamura into a stung gun against the ropes and Crews hit a body slam for two. Crews charged in, Nakamura stopped that and Nakamura hit a kick while Crews was on the ropes. Nakamura with a running knee lift for two. Crews went for a slam, Nakamura got out of that and Nakamura hit a knee and kick for a two count. Azeez pulled Nakamura out of the ring for the DQ finish. It only went about two minutes.
Winner by disqualification: King Nakamura
Analysis: *1/4 A quick match with a lame finish to prevent Crews from getting pinned. I guess it’s different instead of pinning a champion non-title, but it was just a weak kind of DQ ending.
Post match, Nakamura fought off Azeez and then tossed Crews into Azeez to knock them both down. Nakamura left with Boogs.
They showed Kayla Braxton outside the dressing room of Roman Reigns to attempt an interview.
A video package was shown from last week when Baron Corbin interrupted Finn Balor’s contract signing with Roman Reigns and Corbin wanted to sign the contract, but then John Cena took care of Corbin, which led to Cena signing the contract to face Reigns. That means that Cena will face Reigns for the Universal Title at SummerSlam.
They are billing it as “The Greatest of His Time” Roman Reigns against “The Greatest of All Time” John Cena at SummerSlam.
Paul Heyman emerged from the Roman Reigns dressing room to talk to Kayla Braxton, who asked if Reigns had a comment about what transpired last week. Heyman complained about Cena thieving about a title shot at SummerSlam. Heyman said that if the Tampa Bay Schmuccaneers (that drew boos since he didn’t say Buccaneers) signed Tom Brady for another year, then Paul nails Tom Brady from behind, does he get the contract? Heyman said that this contract is a joke and Cena facing Reigns at SummerSlam is meritless. Heyman said that Cena doesn’t deserve this championship match. Heyman said that Reigns has nothing to say about John Cena. Heyman said Kayla’s probably used to hearing this: “I’m not in the mood.” When Heyman turned around, Big E was standing there with the Money in the Bank briefcase and he laughed at Heyman. Terrific facial expressions by both guys. That was great.
Analysis: Great promo work from Heyman as usual. He’s perfect in the role as Roman Reigns’ Special Counsel because he can be in segments like this while Reigns doesn’t have to appear or say a word. That was funny with Big E at the end teasing the potential Money in the Bank cash-in.
This week on Raw, Lashley and MVP respond to Goldberg’s actions. Plus, how will The Queen (Charlotte Flair) respond to a crushing defeat. Does it really matter? Charlotte already has a title shot at SummerSlam. Losing Raw matches mean nothing.

Tamina was already in the ring for a match. Tegan Nox entered with her buddy Shotzi on Shotzi’s tank.
Tamina vs. Tegan Nox (w/Shotzi)
Tamina was in control with a clothesline, headbutt and she sent Nox into the turnbuckle. Nox avoided a charge and hit a dropkick into the corner. Nox hit two cannonball attacks against the turnbuckle leading to a two count. Nox went for a knee attack, Tamina voided it and Tamina picked up Nox on her shoulders for a Samoan Drop. Nox shot a nerf missile (or whatever it is) from the tank to distract Tamina and Nox got a sunset flip a win after about two minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Tegan Nox
Analysis: 3/4* A match with a familiar booking pattern since Tamina is one of the Women’s Tag Team Champions, so Nox got the win to build up her team as contenders. The creative team is stuck in their ways. They can’t seem to come up with other ways to book these kinds of matches. I guess they figure that if Shotzi is going to be ringside on a tank then they might as well use her as part of the finish. Anyway, Natalya should be back in a couple of weeks after an ankle injury, so there should be a Women’s Tag Team Title match at that point.
Zelina Vega was in the office of Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville with Vega looking really short because she is short, but Sonya looks like a giant standing next to her. Vega complained about how it’s not a title match. Pearce said that if Vega does well in the match then she can earn her way into the title match. Deville said that Vega can possibly face the winner of Belair and Banks at SummerSlam. Vega said she knows she can beat Banks and she’ll prove she can beat Belair too.
Edge made his entrance to a big pop from the crowd. Edge was fired up as usual and feeding off the energy of the crowd. The pyro went off for the entrance as usual. It is one of my favorite theme songs and entrances of all time. Edge gets some promo time at the top of hour two.

Let’s Hear from Edge
Edge thanked Tampa for the ovation. Edge said from his understanding, Seth Rollins isn’t there tonight. Edge said that Rollins is nowhere near here and he doesn’t blame him. Edge said if Seth was there then what Edge did to him would lead to Edge ending up in jail. Edge mentioned that Seth cost him the Universal Title at Money in the Bank while adding that if roles were reversed he would have done the same thing. Edge said when he looks at Seth, it’s like looking at his past and he knows this doesn’t end well for either one of them. Edge said if Seth was there, it would end tonight.
Seth Rollins appeared on screen via satellite in a green/punk suit and pink tie. Rollins laughed about how his attack on Edge last week was right out of Edge’s playbook. Rollins said that if the Ultimate Opportunist was half the man that The Architect is then he would know that you always have to have a plan B. Edge said he had a Plan B and he challenged Rollins to a singles match at SummerSlam. Rollins laughed about it saying he calls the shots around there, not Edge. Rollins said he’ll think about it because he’s got a lot going. Rollins said while he’s mulling it over, maybe Edge should think about it. Rollins said that Edge knows what it’s like to have Seth’s boot on his neck. Rollins said you know what happens when he stomps somebody, so what happens when somebody with three neck fusions has their head stomped into the mat? Good question.
Edge said that Rollins is infatuated with Edge. Edge noted that he helped eliminate Rollins at the 2020 Royal Rumble and he eliminated Rollins at this year’s Royal Rumble. Edge said that Rollins couldn’t finish the job in 2014. Edge said that Rollins is like “Edge Light.” Rollins told him to shut up and said he’s better than Edge in every single way and Edge knows it. Rollins said if you want him one on one at SummerSlam then you’re on. Edge’s music played to end it.
Analysis: That was really good with Rollins doing the heelish thing of turning down the challenge at first, but Edge got him riled up by saying Rollins tries to be like Edge. That led to Rollins getting pissed off and accepting the match, which was obviously going to happen. Edge used to be a conniving, vicious heel for most of those 2005 to 2011 years (aside from some time as a face), so now Rollins is in that role and doing things very similar to what Edge used to do, so Edge calling him out on that makes a lot of sense. This has been built up for the last month, so I think we could all tell it was coming. Anyway, Edge vs. Rollins might be my favorite match at SummerSlam since I’m a huge fan of both guys. I think they’ll have great chemistry in their match.
Finn Balor was interviewed backstage by Kayla Braxton. Balor complained about how he was so close to signing a Universal Championship match at SummerSlam, but it was taken away from him. Balor said that when he’s done with Baron Corbin tonight, he’s got a bone to pick with John Cena.
Analysis: I wonder if they do Balor vs. Cena as a Smackdown match perhaps next week or if Cena’s next televised match is at SummerSlam. Cena is working live events, so he is ready to be in matches.
The Street Profits made their entrance to a good ovation as red solo cups filled the stage. They face Ziggler & Roode in tag team action up next.

Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode made their entrance as highlights were shown of Roode/Ziggler beating Street Profits for the SD Tag Team Titles back in January.
The Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins) vs. Robert Roode & Dolph Ziggler
Ford hit dropkicks on both opponents, but then Roode hit a uranage slam. Roode with a leg sweep while Ziggler tagged in and hit a running kick for two with Dawkins making the save. Ford with a step up enziguri on Roode, who was legal. Dawkins got the hot tag (less than two minutes into the match) on Ziggler with Dawkins hitting a splash, a flapjack and Dawkins went for a Powerbomb, but Ziggler rolled through for two. Dawkins hit a spinning neckbreaker on Ziggler for two as Roode made the save. Roode tossed Ford out of the ring, Dawkins with a clothesline on Roode and Ziggler hit a Fameasser on Dawkins for two. That spot usually leads to a two count. Dawkins sent Ziggler into the ropes and Dawkins hit a huge spinebuster. Ford went up top and hit an incredible Frog Splash on Ziggler for the pinfall win after about three minutes.
Winners by pinfall: The Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins)
Analysis: ** It was a fun match for the short time they were given. Ford’s Frog Splash is one of the best highlight reel moves in all of WWE. Roode & Ziggler don’t win very often. They are there to be veteran heels to put on good matches.
They showed a photo of Bianca Belair hanging out with Megan Thee Stallion. I don’t know much about this Megan person, but good for Bianca. There were also some tweets exchanged by Belair and Banks.

The graphic was shown for Bianca Belair defending the Smackdown Women’s Title against Sasha Banks at SummerSlam. That’s going to be fun. I think there might be a title change too.
Zelina Vega made her entrance. I don’t remember the last time she won a match. She has yet to win a match this year.
Bianca Belair vs. Zelina Vega
Belair with a shoulder tackle, then a hair toss across the ring and Vega avoided a charge from Belair. Vega with punches. Belair came back with punches of her own. Belair whipped Vega into the turnbuckle a few times and then Vega got a rollup for two. Belair lifted up Vega in the air, Vega talked to her to set up the headscissors into the ropes. Vega pulled on the hair while against the ropes. Belair with a jumping kick that knocked Vega off the apron to the floor. Belair lifted up Vega for a slam on the floor, Sasha Banks made her entrance with her music playing and Vega managed a headscissors on the floor. Back in the ring, Belair kicked out for a two count.

Vega applied a weak-looking submission pulling on the arms. Belair did a cartwheel to get out of a move. Vega stomped on Belair’s foot and Belair powered out of a move. Vega tried a sunset flip, but Belair blocked it. Belair with a body slam leading into a handstand off the ropes into a moonsault for two. I guess Banks left because she wasn’t shown watching the match. Belair backed Vega into the turnbuckle while Vega went for a sleeper, but Belair turned it into a snap suplex. Vega countered a suplex into a DDT-like move for a two count. Nobody believed that was going to win the match although Cole was yelling to try to sell it. Zelina with a knee to Belair to knock Belair out of the ring. Belair caught Vega on the floor and sent her into the barricade with a swing-like move. Back in the ring, Belair hit the KOD (Kiss of Death) slam for the pinfall win after about nine minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Bianca Belair
Analysis: **1/4 Easy win for Belair. She is booked like a strong champion unlike some champions in WWE, but at least she is presented like a star that can win non-title matches like this. I don’t think anybody believed Vega had a shot to win the match.
Roman Reigns was shown in his dressing room with Paul Heyman mentioning that Finn Balor is facing Baron Corbin up next. Reigns said: “I’m interested.” That was it.
Finn Balor got a good ovation for his entrance for his match up next.

Baron Corbin made his entrance with no music. There was another replay of the contract signing from last week.
Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin
Corbin apologized for what happened last week and Balor said the apology was not accepted. Balor was aggressive with kicks and punches, but Corbin managed to slow him down by tossing him into the turnbuckle. Corbin with a suplex. Corbin with punches to the ribs, but then Balor came back with a Pele Kick. Balor tripped up Corbin leading to a double stomp to the chest. Balor stomped on Corbin’s chest. Balor countered a Chokeslam attempt with kicks to the leg and a Slingblade neckbreaker. Balor with a dropkick that sent Corbin to the corner. Balor up top and he hit the Coup de Grace double foot stomp for the pinfall win after about three minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Finn Balor
Analysis: * Easy win for Balor. Basically a squash match. They need to figure out something with Corbin because this gimmick isn’t helping him at all. I’m happy to see Balor look dominant.
Post match, Finn Balor did a promo saying that three years ago, if what happened last week he would have smiled and accepted it. Balor said that this Finn won’t accept it. Balor said that he wants to face Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship and if he has to go through John Cena then that’s what he’s willing to do. Balor said “name the place, name the time” and here comes Roman Reigns.
Roman Reigns made the entrance as the Universal Champion with Special Counsel Paul Heyman by his side.

Let’s Hear from Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns finished his entrance after the break and got in the ring with Balor while Heyman held the Universal Title behind Reigns. Roman said that his Special Counsel already addressed his position about what happened last week. Roman said he can even understand why Finn was running his mouth about John Cena. Reigns said he tried to help him and give him an opportunity (there were “WHAT” chants) and Reigns told Balor to keep Roman’s name out of his mouth. Reigns threw the microphone at Balor, so Balor shoved Reigns and Roman landed on his feet on the floor. Balor pointed the guns (his fingers) at Reigns.
When Reigns got on the apron, The Usos attacked Balor from behind. The camera was shaking during the attack (so annoying) as The Usos hit a popup Samoan Drop on Balor. Jey went up top, but Balor tripped up Jimmy and Jey hit an Uso Splash on Jimmy by accident. Balor stomped on both Usos and tossed Jey out of the ring while Jimmy was on the floor. Balor hit a somersault dive onto both Usos on the floor. Balor pointed at Reigns again, so Reigns took off his coat and went into the ring. Reigns with a knee to the ribs of Balor, but Balor hit a Slingblade. Balor set up for a dropkick, but The Usos stopped him. Reigns hit a Superman Punch on Balor. Jey went up top and hit an Uso Splash on Balor. Reigns applied the Guillotine Choke on Balor, who was tapping out and Balor passed out in the ring.
Reigns stood tall with The Usos as Balor was down in the ring. Reigns held up the Universal Title. That was all for this week’s Smackdown.
Analysis: If the SummerSlam main event was Reigns vs. Balor then it would have been very effective, but it’s Reigns vs. Cena, who was not on Smackdown this week. I think they will probably do Reigns vs. Balor as a Universal Title feud after SummerSlam and that’s going to be good when it happened. I like that Finn put up a fight until he was unable to keep going since it was a 3 on 1 situation. Reigns did a good job as always although it was also the usual thing we always see from him over the last year.

Final Thoughts
This was below average for Smackdown, but still had some good things about it. I thought most of the promos were strong with the Banks/Belair duel to start, then Edge/Rollins setting up their SummerSlam match and Balor calling out Reigns leading to their segment in the main event.
I think they were pretty lazy in terms of booking match finishes this week. The DQ in Nakamura’s match against Crews sucked. Vega’s match was boring – she has no credibility with no wins in like a year so there’s no reaction to nearfalls, the Nox/Tamina match was two minutes with a goofy finish and the last match with Balor beating Corbin was a three-minute 1993 Superstars squash. When you have only one good match (three stars or up) in two hours when you have the kind of roster that Smackdown has, that’s not a good sign.
Smackdown should have better, more interesting matches. Instead, they had matches with predictable outcomes and it was more like a Raw episode instead of the better Smackdown brand.
The next WWE pay-per-view event is SummerSlam in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21. Here’s the lineup so far:
