The John Report: AEW Dynamite 10/09/19 Review

Welcome to the second AEW Dynamite Review right here on TJRWrestling. The first show was pretty good as they set the stage for this week and continued their build to the top matches at the AEW Full Gear PPV on November 9th. I’m glad AEW is here as an alternative to WWE and just because it gives me more wrestling to write about it every week. Thank you TSN2 here in Canada for showing it live while it’s on TNT in the US. Let’s see what the AEW crew has in store for us in week two.

The AEW intro video aired. There was pyro on the stage for the opening. They showed the crowd in Boston making a lot of noise.

The AEW Dynamite announce team of Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone and Excalibur were at their desk ready to call the action. They talked over graphics promoting the five matches advertised for the show. The main event is Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara vs. Dustin Rhodes and Adam Page.

A video package aired to set up The Young Bucks vs. Private Party in the AEW Tag Team Title tournament. The Young Bucks said they had to prove they’re the best and Private Party talked about how they are the least known team in AEW, so they need to show what they can do.

The Young Bucks got a big pop for their entrance as two of the biggest stars in AEW and they’re both AEW EVPs as well. I like the Young Bucks “bucks” that go into the card as part of their entrance. They showed other tag teams in the crowd watching the match. Private Party got a decent reaction for their entrance as the announcers talked about how this is the biggest night in the careers of Private Party.

AEW World Tag Team Title Tournament: The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) vs. Private Party (Marq Quen and Isiah Kassidy)

Kassidy showed his quickness by avoiding two superkicks by Nick, so Nick spit gum at him. Nick hit a neckbreaker off the ropes, Matt tagged in, kicked Quen down and a neckbreaker into a backbreaker by the Bucks. Nick and Matt each hit double axe handles onto Kassidy’s arm and Nick with a double stomp to the arm. Kassidy sent Matt out of the ring, Kassidy with a kick to the head of Nick and a moonsault taking out Matt on the floor. Quen got the tag with a cross body block off the top on Nick. Quen with a suicide dive on Matt, a dive over the top on Nick, a somersault dive over the top onto Matt and a twisting dive onto Nick. The fans were going crazy for that flurry of offense from Quen. Quen went up top and hit a 450 Splash on Nick for a two count. Matt got the tag, Quen didn’t see it and Matt hit him with a superkick. Kassidy did a springboard attack right into a double superkick. That was too choreographed where both guys were just standing there waiting for it. Matt hit a sunset flip into a Powerbomb on Kassidy on the steel ramp. Nick with a jumping kick to Quen, then he set up for a Powerbomb and Matt hit a neckbreaker off the top for a two count. Nick slapped on a Sharpshooter on Quen, but Quen quickly got to the ropes. The fans were chanting “this is awesome” for them and most of the fans were standing. Nick with a kick to the head of Quen followed by a double foot stomp off the top rope while Matt held Quen. Nick went for a Spear, Quen moved and Nick went to the floor. Kassidy was back on the apron after taking that Powerbomb on the ramp. When Quen broke free, Nick pulled Kassidy off the apron and Matt came back with a Spear on Quen for a two count. Quen with a knee to the head to avoid a double suplex and a backflipping kick connected. Kassidy got the tag with a missile dropkick on both Bucks. Kassidy did a good job of selling his back injury and hit a hurricanrana on the Bucks. The announcer Justin Roberts announced “ten minutes remaining” and JR wondered what that was. It’s the time limit, Jim. Excalibur let him know.

Matt hit his Three Northern Lights suplexes on Kassidy and then Quen joined in, so Matt hit a double suplex for a two count. That’s always impressive when Matt does that. JR did a good job of saying the Young Bucks realizing they were in a fight here. Matt with a Buckle Bomb, Nick with a kick to the back of Cassidy and Matt wit ha Sharpshooter on Kassidy. Nick kicked Quen while on the apron to knock him down. Nick with a leg drop on Kassidy and then Kassidy crawled to the ropes to break the submission. Quen made a blind tag, Kassidy with a Reverse Rana and Quen hit a hurricanrana into a Cutter by Kassidy called the Gin & Juice. Quin went up top and hit a Shooting Star Press, but Matt kicked out by getting his shoulder up. The Bucks set up for their double team finisher, but Kassidy pulled Nick off the apron and Quin rolled up Matt for the upset win after 13 minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Private Party (Marq Quen and Isiah Kassidy)

Analysis: ****1/4 This match was outstanding with a lot of believable nearfalls for both teams as the excitement built. That was a great match that was very fast paced and exciting as soon as the match began. The crowd was into it so much that they stood up the entire time. There were so many cool moves by both teams and Private Party really impressed me with the double team combinations that they did. I’ve only seen a few matches from them and they get better every time. To have a match that’s over four stars out of five as the opener on the show is impressive. As for the result, I was very surprised by it because I thought the Young Bucks would win. It shows how unselfish they are as Executive VPs that are willing to put over a young tag team like Private Party. Great start by AEW.

Post match, Private Party went into the crowd to celebrate with the fans.

Let’s Hear from Chris Jericho and Friends

The new heel group of AEW World Champion Chris Jericho, Jake Hager, Santana, Ortiz and Sammy Guevara made their entrance. They entered to the song “Judas” by Jericho’s band Fozzy.

Jericho let us know his name and reminded us he is “Le Champion” of AEW. Jericho said last week the debut of AEW Dynamite took the world by storm. Jericho said that it was the highest rated premiere in TNT history and it’s all because of him. That drew a mixed reaction, but I would say mostly cheers. The fans chanted “Thank You Jericho” and he told them to shut up. Jericho said that the show ended last week with the five of them beating up All Elite. Jericho said they proved who they are because they are next and they are now. Jericho said that these are his confidants and they are the four closest allies he has. Jericho said he would explain what they are all about.

Jericho said Guevara was a Spanish God and look how sexy he is. Jericho said Sammy is one of the greatest performers he’s seen at his age in a long time because he’s athletic, acrobat and simply amazing. Jericho said Sammy is on his list. Jericho spoke about Santana and Ortiz calling them psychos. Jericho claimed he personally recruited them to AEW, they’re ready to fight, they are street fighter back alley brutes and he likes it. That’s why they made Jericho’s list. Jericho managed to work “viva la raza” into his promo as a nice nod to Eddie Guerrero, whose birthday is today as fans chanted “Eddie” because they knew. Jericho talked about the “giant” Jake Hager behind him that’s a former World Champion, but right here, right now he’s one of the toughest, most terrifying, most crazy MMA fighters while fans chanted “We The People” at them. Jericho said “We The People” sucked and it’s dead and buried. The fans cheered Jericho for shutting them down. Jericho said it’s a stupid idea from bad creative and all that’s gone. The fans cheered that too. Jericho put over Hager for being feared in MMA and undefeated in his MMA career and that man Hager is the toughest man in AEW as well as all of professional wrestling. Jericho said that Hager isn’t afraid to challenge anybody because look at him, he’s a giant. Hager just looked ahead with a serious look on his face.

Jericho said these are his closest confidants, this is his inner circle and “We are the Inner Circle, baby.” That’s the group name – Inner Circle. Jericho said they are in charge now.

Jericho said he didn’t care if you’re the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega or “stupid son of a bitch” Cody. Jericho ranted about his Full Gear opponent Cody claiming he was entitled because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Jericho claimed he didn’t like Cody’s family while adding he didn’t like Dusty Rhodes because he thought he was a jerk. The fans booed that. Jericho said he didn’t like Dustin Rhodes and he’s going to kick his ass tonight. Jericho said he’s going “beat the ever-living shit” out of Cody and they did not bleep it when he said “shit” there. Jericho said they were going to celebrate with a “little bit of the bubbly” and reminded us they were the Inner Circle. The group posed leading to a break.

Analysis: Great promo from Jericho putting over the guys in his group. The Inner Circle name isn’t amazing or anything, but it’s simple enough and it gets the job done. I liked the lines that Jericho had when the fans chanted “We The People” and Jericho told them it was bad creative. He didn’t mention WWE, but we all know that’s what he was talking about. Jericho saying he didn’t like Dusty Rhodes was a heel being an asshole to get heat, but the fans still cheered most of the promo. It was good for a mission statement for the group.

The Inner Circle shirts are already ready, of course.

Jimmy Havoc made his entrance. As he got into the ring, they showed a pre-tape promo from Havoc saying he’s been in the business for 15 years and tonight is the biggest opportunity for him in his career. Havoc said he liked the pain and the violence, so tonight Darby Allin gets to feel his pain. Darby Allin made his entrance and the announcers put over his draw with Cody earlier in the year.

The winner of this match gets to face Chris Jericho for the AEW World Title next week on Dynamite.

Jimmy Havoc vs. Darby Allin

There were two count pin attempts by both guys to start the match. Allin with an arm drag across the ring, corner splash and a dropkick into the turnbuckle. Havoc bit the fingers of Allin, then a shoulder tackle and Havoc suplexed Allin from inside the ring onto the floor. That’s a rough bump, but they did it as safely as they could. Back in the ring, Havoc worked over Allin with a hard whip into the corner followed by more finger biting. Allin with a running attack against the turnbuckle, but Havoc stopped a charge with a sleeper hold. Havoc picked up Allin and gave him a sleeper hold suplex across the ring. Allin went to the floor leading to the break, so that was familiar in terms of a floor to commercial break.

The match returned with Havoc hitting a roaring elbow for a two count. Havoc with a Death Valley Driver that sent Allin into the turnbuckle for two. Havoc hit a Tiger Driver 1998 cradle piledriver like move for a two count as Allin got his hand on the bottom rope. Allin got a rollup for two. Allin got some revenge with some finger biting of his own. Allin with a Stunner and then he went up top with a back splash called the Coffin Drop onto Havoc for the pinfall win after 10 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Darby Allin

Analysis: **1/2 It was a solid match with Havoc in control for most of it, Allin got revenge with the biting and then he hit two moves to get the win. Allin is really good at selling and making it look like he’s out of it, but then he found a way to make the comeback. The finisher is unique.

That win means that Darby Allin will challenge Chris Jericho for the AEW World Title next week on Dynamite.

There’s a women’s tag team match up next as we get to the end of hour two.

Analysis: There is a difference in show format between AEW Dynamite and how WWE does their shows. The top of hour two match, if WWE was booking, would be a bigger match like Moxley vs. Spears. AEW is doing a women’s tag match at the top of the hour after a break. I’m not saying this is the wrong way to do it. It’s just not the same way WWE does it. Being different is good.

The four women made their entrance for the tag team match. Sakura is a legendary Japanese women’s wrestler and she trained Riho, who is the AEW Women’s Champion on the other side.

Bea Priestly and Sakura vs. Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. and Riho

I missed the first couple of minutes here. Sakura was working over Riho’s back with her feet. Priestley went after Baker outside the ring. Priestly whipped Baker into the barricade. Baker came back with punches on Priestly. Sakura left the ring and went after Baker leading to a double team suplex on Baker on the floor. Riho went up top and hit a cross body block on Sakura and Priestly on the floor.

(Commercial split screen action. Baker and Riho got running knee attacks on the opponents. Riho sent Priestly into the middle ropes and hit a 619 kick for a two count. Baker tagged in, but Priestly stopped her momentum with a double stomp to the back. Sakura and Priestly with a double kick on Baker. Priestly hit a bridging suplex for two on Baker. Riho with a jumping knee on Sakura. Priestly with a roundhouse kick on Riho. Priestly and Baker got into a bit of a slugfest, Riho with a knee attack on Priestly and Baker hit a DDT on Priestly for two as Sakura broke up the pin. Back to full screen action.)

Sakura took control again with a backbreaker on Baker. Sakura with a running cross body block and an elbow splash off the ropes as Schiavone noted Sakura was a 24-year veteran. Baker with a Stunner. Riho went in illegally, but they don’t pay attention to rules, she took out Sakura and went after Priestly while Baker got a neckbreaker for two. Baker with an elbow strike to the head, a neckbreaker and a stretch submission by Baker led to the tapout. Riho held onto Priestly to prevent a save. It went about nine minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. and Riho

Analysis: **3/4 It was just an average tag team match. There wasn’t enough Riho for my liking, but this felt like a match where they wanted to showcase Baker more. They probably could have done the finish better because Riho just went in the ring without the referee trying to stop it even what Riho did is not allowed by traditional tag team rules.

Post match, Priestly tried to get in the face of Baker, but the referee and Riho broke it up. Nothing really happened there.

Analysis: They are trying to build a rivalry with Priestly and Baker although Priestly didn’t look that impressive in this match. They need to build her up more.

There was a video featuring the Best Friends duo of Trent Beretta and Chuck Taylor hugging.

Trent and Chuck were at ringside where they were interviewed. Taylor said that was the best video he’s ever seen. They were asked how they were feeling. Taylor said don’t ask us, ask this guy…and it was Orange Cassidy in the first row with a thumb up in the air. The fans popped for it.

Analysis: I’m not a huge fan of the Orange Cassidy gimmick. They haven’t really done much with him yet, though.

The lights went out in the arena and when they came back on, Shawn Spears was sitting on a steel chair. Tully Blanchard joined Spears with Tully as his manager. That led to a break.

They showed Pac sitting at the announce table for this next match.

Jon Moxley made his entrance looking fired up and ready to go. The introduction for Moxley by ring announcer Justin Roberts was excellent. Moxley is one of my favorite guys in AEW and I’m glad he’s back in action after some health issues this past summer. Moxley had surgery on his elbow after a staph infection and he missed All Out because he was out of action for about five weeks. Moxley had a bandage on his right elbow.

Jon Moxley vs. Shawn Spears

Moxley and Spears were aggressive with punches. Pac complained about how guys like Darby Allin are getting title shots, but he is not. Very good point considering Pac has wins over Omega and Page. Moxley with a running forearm to Spears to knock him out of the ring. Moxley followed up with a running knee to the back and he whipped Spears into the barricade. When Moxley tried to do more, Blanchard grabbed his back, Spears grabbed Moxley and Moxley sent Spears into the barricade. Moxley with a forearm to knock Spears down. Spears went back in the ring and Blanchard capitalized on the referee not looking by whipping Moxley into the steel steps. Spears worked over Moxley with punches. Pac talked about his impressive win-loss record and wondered why he was relegated to being on the commentary table. Spears put Moxley on his back and drove him into the barricade. If the referee actually counted guys out when they were out of the ring then this would have been a countout a few minutes ago, but there has been no count.

(Commercial split screen – When Spears went back in the ring, the referee finally counted and Moxley got back in the ring. Spears got an elbow drop on Moxley for a two count. Spears continued his offense with chops, Moxley came back with chops of his own and Spears hit a dropkick for two. Spears stomped on the gut of Moxley. When Moxley left the ring, Spears wen after him and spit some water in Moxley’s face.)

The match returned when they got back in the ring with Spears hitting a sitout spinebuster for two. When Moxley was out of the ring, Spears hit a suicide dive. Moxley managed to hit a suicide dive of his own as the crowd came alive for Mox. They went back into the ring, kick to the face and Moxley hit a running knee to the face for two. It was announced that ten minutes have gone by and ten minutes remain. Spears and Moxley exchanged strikes, forearm to the face by Spears and then Moxley came back with a running clothesline. Blanchard with a distraction and Spears came back with an Ushigoroshi slam into the knee for a two count. When Spears went for another slam, Moxley hit the Paradigm Shift (Double Arm DDT) for the pinfall win after 12 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Jon Moxley

Analysis: ***1/4 A good match between two former WWE guys who really didn’t cross paths when they worked there. I thought they did a nice job of making Spears look credible with several believable nearfalls. Blanchard got in some cheap shots as well and I wish there was even more cheating. That’s something all heels need to do more of – cheat and cheat some more! Anyway, Moxley getting the win was the obvious result and the right move since he’s in a big match at Full Gear while Spears doesn’t really have anything else going on. Nice work by both guys.

After the match, Kenny Omega showed up with a barbed wire baseball bat and a barbed wire broom because Omega is known as The Cleaner. Omega was facing off with Moxley, so Pac grabbed a steel chair and hit Omega in the back with it. Pac went to the backstage area. Moxley threw the bat down because he didn’t want to do a cheap attack on Omega. That led to a break.

Analysis: The attack from Pac shows that he’s in that upper tier of AEW wrestlers along with Moxley and Omega. They might do a triple threat between them or maybe Pac will face Omega just like he did at All Out where Pac got the win. This time, Omega could get the win to help build him up more. I’m so ready for Moxley vs. Omega at Full Gear next month. That’s the match I care about the most so far.

Dustin Rhodes made his entrance for the main event tag team match. “Hangman” Adam Page made his entrance and the graphics during his entrance noted he was 2-2. They mention everybody’s record when they enter, which is cool for credibility’s sake. The announcers all thought that Page had a look similar to Barry Windham, who used to team with Dustin. Page does have a similar look to Barry, but he’s about six inches shorter, if not more.

Sammy Guevera was up next for his team and I feel like his “Best Ever” nickname needs work for a guy in his mid-20s. Chris Jericho got a superstar entrance, which is no surprise for the AEW World Champion that also sings his own theme song. Jake Hager was with him as JR told a story that Hager was in JR’s house when he got into wrestling and JR’s wife told Hager to get his feet off the table. Nice story.

Chris Jericho (w/Jake Hager) and Sammy Guevara vs. Dustin Rhodes and “Hangman” Adam Page

This match started with about 20 minutes left in the show. Rhodes wanted Jericho, but Jericho didn’t want it and then Rhodes went after Jericho outside the ring. Rhodes whipped Jericho into the ring post. Rhodes is 50 years old and Jericho will be 49 years old in one month, but both guys are still great. JR put over Dustin and Cody’s great match at Double or Nothing as the best match he’s seen this year. Page hit a clothesline on Guevara and a fallaway slam across the ring. Page with a jumping attack over the top rope onto Jericho on the floor. Rhodes tagged in with a hard whip into the turnbuckle and worked on the arm. Page with a running knee and Dustin with a suplex into a slam. Page with a standing Shooting Star Press on Guevara for a two count. Page went up top, Jericho distracted him, Guevara with a rising knee on Page and then he picked him up leading to a slam onto the turnbuckle. Guevara worked over Page in the ring leading to a break.

The match returned with Jericho setting up Page against the middle ropes and hitting a jumping splash on the back of Page. Jericho missed an attack, Guevara got the tag, Guevara knocked Rhodes off the apron and slapped on a chinlock on Page. There was a belly to back suplex from Page. Jericho pulled on Page’s hair just to be a jerk. Page with punches, but Jericho came back with a back elbow. Jericho went for a Lionsault, but Page got his knees up to block. Guevara grabbed Page again and Paige got back up with a discus lariat with Guevara doing a huge flip bump to sell that. Great spot there. The fans were cheering as Rhodes got the hot tag with a punch and a clothesline. Rhodes with an uppercut punch, atomic drop, kick to the face and Rhodes with an atomic drop on Jericho. Rhodes went up top and jumped off with a cross body on Jericho and Guevara at the same time. The fans gave Dustin a big ovation for that. Guevara with a kick to Rhodes, then Rhodes sent him out of the ring and Page hit a moonsault on Guevara on the floor. Hager ran over Page with a clothesline on the floor, which the referee didn’t see. Jericho tagged in and Rhodes hit him with a sunset flip bomb for a two count. Rhodes knocked Guevara down and set up Jericho in the corner. Hager went into the ring and punched Rhodes. The referee didn’t see it because he was checking on Guevara. Jericho hit the Judas Effect elbow on Rhodes for the pinfall win after 14 minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara

Analysis: ***1/4 Good tag team match with Jericho getting another victory to continue his positive momentum in AEW because he hasn’t lost. It’s so awesome to see how motivated and hungry Dustin still is when he’s out there because he moves like a man much younger than he is. The fans love him too, so when he tagged in, the pace of the match really picked up. Guevara and Page did well when they were out there. The finish was smart because it positioned Hager as a physical force and difference-maker that got in the cheap shot leading to the finish for Jericho. If you’re going to have a guy like Hager out there, you might as well use him and that’s what they did.

After the match was over, Hager with a clothesline that sent Page out of the ring. Jericho and Guevara stomped away on Rhodes. Page threw a chair at Hager. Page and Hager went brawling to the back.

The lights went out in the arena. When the lights came on, Cody Rhodes was there in a dress shirt and slacks. Rhodes hit the Cross Rhodes on Guevara. It led to a showdown between Jericho and Rhodes, but Santana and Ortiz showed up for the save.

MJF ran out to the ring with a steel chair. There was a tease that he might attack Cody, but he didn’t do it and he attacked Jericho, Santana and Ortiz with a steel chair. The fans popped huge for MJF and chanted his name, which MJF celebrated. Jericho capitalized on the situation with a Codebreaker on MJF. The Young Bucks ran out for the save and they attacked Santana and Ortiz with suicide dives on them.

Jericho grabbed the AEW World Title and was at ringside with it. Darby Allin showed up on his skateboard and hit Jericho with a clothesline. That looked cool actually. Allin hit Jericho in the back with the skateboard. The fans popped huge in support for Allin. There were “AEW” chants. Jericho and his Inner Circle group retreated while Jericho said he’ll see Darby next week.

The group of Cody, the Young Bucks, MJF, Darby Allin and Dustin Rhodes were in the ring.

Jericho said you don’t know who they are because they are the Inner Circle and they are taking control. Jericho said he’ll see Darby next week for the AEW Title and called him a bitch. Cody and his allies were hugging in the ring as the show ended right at 10pmET.

Analysis: That closing segment was well done. They left enough time to set up all the saves and run-ins. I liked the tease of MJF possibly turning on Cody. It’s coming, but not yet. The Young Bucks taking out Santana and Ortiz is probably a sign of that being a future feud. I can see Hager vs. Page as a match at Full Gear with Hager getting the win to establish him as a dominant guy in AEW. They also set up what should be a 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 tag team match with all of the guys in that final segment. It likely won’t be next week because we know Jericho has a World Title match, but they can definitely do it before we get to Full Gear.

That’s five people technically, but I had to honor the guys in the tag team match. Jericho is first because of the promo and the match.

Final Thoughts

This week’s Dynamite gets an 8 out of 10.

It was a great show this week and I liked it a bit more than last week mainly because that opening tag team match was better than any match last week. The Young Bucks and Private Party absolutely, plus it was a huge upset win, which fans are going to remember for a long time. I think the other matches were solid the rest of the night. Nothing was close to the level of the first match, but they all got a decent amount of time and nothing felt rushed. This show is easy to watch and it flows by quickly. I enjoyed it.

There was some improvement in terms of promos with the Inner Circle group getting some time to let us know who they are. Plus, they had small promos for guys like Jimmy Havoc and Best Friends. We just need more of that to further establish these characters.

What they need to work on is establishing the characters more. They don’t really have heels other than Jericho’s Inner Circle and even then, the fans cheered most of the promo. I realize that AEW is probably not going to force people to do heelish things, but matches and feuds are better when there are bad guys out there too. The fans cheering nearly everybody is okay, but some different reactions would be nice too.

Great night for Private Party and Darby Allin in terms of taking young talent and booking them the right way. Building up new stars is key.

Next week’s show has Jericho vs. Allin for the AEW Title and it was built up pretty well this week. Do I expect a title change? Nope, but Allin has been impressive. It’s all about making the new talent like Allin look like stars just like the more established guys. When you hear the crowd, clearly fans are buying into Allin. It should be a good match next week.

The next AEW PPV is Full Gear on November 9. Here’s the official lineup so far.

I think other possible matches are Jake Hager vs. Adam Page, Young Bucks vs. Santana/Ortiz and more. They still have another month to set up other matches.
