The John Report: AEW Dynamite 10/27/21 Review
AEW Dynamite is back on Wednesday night. After being moved to Saturdays for the last two weeks, Dynamite is in its regular timeslot once again.
This is AEW Dynamite episode #108 at the Agganis Arena in Boston, Massachusetts. Follow me on Twitter @johnreport. Let’s get to it.
The announce team of Jim Ross, Excalibur and Tony Schiavone welcomed us to the show with a rundown of the matches coming up this week.
CM Punk was up first to a huge ovation with the fans chanting along with the “Cult of Personality” song that Punk uses. Happy belated birthday to Punk, who turned 43 years old on Tuesday. Punk’s opponent is Bobby Fish, who turned 45 years old on Wednesday. They showed the clip from Dynamite last week when Fish beat Anthony Greene easily, attacked after the match, Punk made the save and the match was made for this episode of Dynamite.
CM Punk vs. Bobby Fish
This was Punk’s first match on Dynamite Punk was in control with a headlock followed by a shoulder tackle. Fish delivered some hard kicks to Punk’s legs. Fish delivered knee lifts, Punk fought back with a takedown and an elbow drop. Punk with a shoulder tackle, Punk avoided a leapfrog and Punk hit a body slam. Punk with another body slam, which is a move Punk talked about on commentary in the past. The fans popped big for a third body slam. Punk with a running knee, Fish avoided a clothesline, they each avoided moves and Fish kicked the legs again. Fish with a senton over the top for two. Fish hit a suplex for two. Punk came back with a clothesline to send Fish over the top to the floor. Punk with a tope suicida (suicide dive) on Fish on the floor. Fish went into the ring, then went under the bottom rope to the floor, Punk to the apron and Fish kicked the leg to knock Punk down. Fish talked to the referee who talked to Punk and Fish hit Punk with a running elbow. Fish with a belly to back suplex along with an inverted dragon screw leg whip. Fish with a knee drop on the left knee along with another leg whip on the left knee. Fish sent Punk into the barricade followed by kicks to the body. Punk with some strikes, but then Fish hit a knee to the ribs. Back in the ring, Fish with a running knee to the ribs and then Fish stretched Punk’s left knee against the ropes. Fish set up Punk on the top turnbuckle, Punk delivered punches to knock Fish down and Punk jumped off the top with one leg (to sell the left leg injury) leading to an elbow drop by Punk. They exchanged strikes, Punk stagged Fish with a forearm and then Fish kicked the left leg of Punk. Fish charged, Punk got back up with a jumping heel kick and a neckbreaker. Punk with a knee followed by a clothesline for two. Punk went for the GTS, but Fish caught the leg and did a leg whip again. Fish with a sliding clothesline. Fish went for a hold on the mat, Punk got out of it, Punk lifted Fish to his shoulder and Punk hit the Go To Sleep (GTS) for the pinfall win after 13 minutes. Punk was a bit slow to cover with Fish kicking out moments after the three count.
Winner by pinfall: CM Punk
Analysis: ***1/2 A very good match that was competitive the whole way. Fish got a lot of offense working over the left knee for most of it and Punk sold it well. I don’t think anybody watching this really believed Fish was going to win, so that hurts a match like this a bit. I did like Fish blocking the GTS attempt, but did anybody really think Fish was going to win? Nope. Punk winning clean with the GTS was the obvious match result because AEW is going to keep booking Punk in a strong manner.
Punk was limping to sell the left leg injury.
Analysis: Full Gear is coming up on November 13 and right now there’s no clear indication of who Punk is going to wrestle at that show. I hope they set up something for him soon. (Note: I saw Rampage spoilers, so it looks like AEW has something for him to do at Full Gear.)
They showed a video from Malakai Black talking about how he made an entire crowd hate Cody Rhodes. Black said if you think this is about pinfalls, think again. Black said that “The House Always Wins.”
MJF is up next.
(Commercial)
The music of Maxwell Jacob Friedman hit and he was greeted with boos from the crowd. MJF was joined by Wardlow and Shawn Spears.
Maxwell Jacob Friedman (w/Wardlow and Shawn Spears) vs. Bryce Donovan
MJF wanted a handshake, Donovan shook it and MJF kicked him. MJF whipped Donovan into the turnbuckle. MJF hit the Heatseeker piledriver off the ropes for the pinfall win in about 30 seconds.
Winner by pinfall: Maxwell Jacob Friedman
Analysis: No rating. Match of the year.
MJF said that Boston was an “absolute shithole” and that drew boos. MJF talked about how beating people up and hooking up with rats, but he’d rather put his junk in a blender than be with a woman from Boston. MJF ripped on Boston’s women, then said that all of your mothers say “harder MJF, harder.” MJF moved on to talk about Darby Allin. MJF said that Darby claimed that he couldn’t break him mentally, but MJF said that Darby is too scared to show up for work now. MJF chanted “Asshole” at him, so MJF said he can’t hear them over the money he makes. MJF said that Darby should be scared since MJF knocked out Sting with the Dynamite Diamond Ring. MJF mentioned he beat Adam Page to win the Dynamite Diamond Ring for the first time. MJF spoke about his destiny saying he didn’t care if it was Kenny or Adam after Full Gear because he is the past, present or the future.
Analysis: MJF back in the AEW World Title hunt again? I’d be all for that.
The music of Sting played and the graphic appeared on the screens, then it stopped, so MJF and Spears laughed about it. That’s when the lights went out again. Spears said he didn’t do it.
A video aired of some music event where Darby Allin dropkicked a guy with an MJF mask and Allin slammed the MJF masked guy through a table. Sting was in the ring with the baseball bat and he beat up Spears and Wardlow with the baseball bat. Darby Allin was in the crowd with a mask on, but MJF ran up the ramp. Allin grabbed a skateboard (with thumbtacks on it) from under the ring and hit Wardlow with the skateboard that had thumbtacks in it. MJF was up the ramp.
Allin: “Max. Full Gear.” That was it. MJF was far away from him, so we couldn’t tell if he agreed, but it’s likely going to be made official.
Analysis: That was really well done. Allin was taken out in a parking lot by MJF and friends a few weeks ago, so he was out of action for a bit to sell it. It was the right time to bring Allin back. The fans hate MJF, so having Allin there as a guy that wants to shut up MJF is the right feud at the right time. The fans are going to back Allin fully while MJF continues to get a lot of heat. I don’t know who’s going to win the match, but I think it should be great. I’d probably pick MJF right now.

Britt Baker, the AEW Women’s Champion, was interviewed with Rebel and Jamie Hayter by her side. Tony Schiavone was there to inform Britt that she has to face Abadon in a No DQ Match this Friday on Rampage. It’s because Britt walked out of a match against Abadon on the Jericho Cruise recently.
Ethan Page entered first for the AEW TNT Title match. Sammy Guevara got a nice ovation as the champion with Sammy running down to the ring to get the match started.
TNT Championship: Sammy Guevara vs. Ethan Page
If Sammy Guevara loses then he must leave the Inner Circle group. Everybody else was banned from ringside.
Sammy with punches, then two jumping knees to knock Ethan out of the ring and Sammy hit a twisting splash on Page on the floor. Sammy tossed Ethan over the timekeeper’s table at ringside. Sammy whipped Ethan into the barricade two times. Sammy sent Ethan into the ring, so referee Bryce Remsburg called for the bell.
They exchanged punches, Ethan ran the ropes, Sammy jumped over with a backflip and hit an impressive dropkick. Sammy hit a snap suplex with Tony Nese shown in the crowd. Excalibur said he was a free agent even though there have been reports that Nese has signed with AEW. Ethan and Sammy exchanged strikes again, Sammy with a lifting move leading to a kick to the back. Sammy with a kick to the head. Sammy to the turnbuckle, Ethan met him there and hit a backbreaker across the top turnbuckle. They went to a picture in picture break.
(Commercial)
Ethan Page was in full control during the break, then Sammy tried punches and Ethan hit a knee to the body. Sammy with running back elbows, then a shoulder to the ribs and an enziguri kick. Sammy with a double springboard into a Cutter! That was great. Sammy charged in, Ethan got a boot up and Ethan charged with Sammy hitting a Spanish Fly slam for a two count. Ethan rolled out of the ring, Sammy took his time getting to the top and Sammy hit a Shooting Star Press onto a standing Ethan on the floor. That was wild. It looked impressive by Sammy, who hit a forearm/clothesline on the way down. Sammy went for a lifting move, Ethan with elbows and Ethan slammed Sammy off the turnbuckle. Ethan with a powerslam for two. Ethan up top taking way too long, Sammy met him up there and Ethan slammed Sammy off the top followed by Ethan hitting a running shoulder tackle for two. Ethan went for the Ego’s Edge off the middle ropes, but Sammy countered with a hurricanrana. Sammy off the top with a Shooting Star Press, Ethan moved, Sammy with a trip and a jackknife pin cover for the win after 11 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Sammy Guevara
Analysis: ***1/4 That was a well-worked title match with Sammy retaining, which was obvious based on the stipulation. Sammy is really good at doing the high-flying moves that make him very likable as a babyface. Ethan is a skilled technician with a lot of experience, so they matched up well together. I hope Ethan Page gets a nice push some day while Sammy continues to bring the excitement in every match he has.
Post match, Ethan Page hit Sammy in the back with a forearm. Scorpio Sky ran out to the ring to join Ethan in beating up Sammy for a few moments. That led to Chris Jericho’s “Judas” song hit leading to Jericho, Jake Hager, Santana & Ortiz going down to the ring to save their buddy Sammy. The fans sang along with the song for a couple of minutes.
Chris Jericho took his time to start a promo. Jericho said of course the Jackasses of the Year try to ambush Sammy after his big win tonight. Jericho said that at least Sky beat Jericho twice while the last thing Ethan beat was himself in his hotel room last night. Ethan shook his head no. There was a “beat the meat” chant. Jericho said that Sammy won the match so there will be a 5 on 5 ten man tag team match at Full Gear on November 13 with Page, Sky, America’s Top Team vs. the reunited Inner Circle. Jericho said that by virtue of Tony Khan, this is going to be a Minneapolis Street Fight. Jericho said next week they will decide what members of America’s Top Team will be in the match. Jericho called Dan Lambert a “pumpkin head dipshit” this time. Jericho referenced some Aerosmith song to say they would kick some ass.
Analysis: Making the 5 on 5 tag team match a Street Fight should make it pretty wild. That means no tags and a lot of brawling. I think Inner Circle should win.
Bryan Danielson (I almost wrote Daniel Bryan) and Eddie Kingston were interviewed by Tony Schiavone backstage. Eddie talked about how he takes a pill of Zoloft to stop himself from doing stupid things and he battles depression. Eddie said Bryan shouldn’t question his hard work. Bryan said that’s the Eddie Kingston that he wants to see. Bryan said he has been through it too. Bryan said so many people have gone through it every single day and still put in the work. Bryan knows Eddie works his ass off every time he steps in the ring. Bryan said that Eddie and Jon Moxley are the two toughest professional wrestlers he’s ever met in his entire life. Bryan said on Friday, he’ll prove he’s the best and he’ll beat Eddie whether he’s willing to listen or not.
Analysis: Awesome promos there. No surprise considering the guys delivering them. Danielson should win their match, and I think it will be a lot of fun to watch.
(Commercial)
The Lucha Brothers and Alex the translator were interviewed by Tony Schiavone backstage. Fenix said that they will put these titles on the line at Full Gear against FTR. Alex said that at Full Gear, they’ll put the titles on the line against FTR.
Analysis: I thought the match was already official, but maybe it wasn’t. Now it is. It should be an awesome match between Lucha Brothers and FTR.
TBS Title Tournament First Round: Hikaru Shida vs. Serena Deeb
Serena beat Shida a few weeks ago followed by a cheap attack. Shida was aggressive with a jumping kick, but then Serena got a hold of the leg and wrapped the left leg against the ring post. Shida managed to use her legs to send Serena into the ring post. They battled on the apron with Shida hitting an impressive superplex while standing on the middle rope. They went to a picture in picture break.
(Commercial)
The match returned with the two women exchanging punches, then Shida took control with punches and a running knee against the turnbuckle. Shida with a running forearm to stun Serena. Shida went up top and hit a missile dropkick followed by a delayed vertical suplex. Shida with multiple kicks, then a German Suplex and a Dominator slam for the two count. Shida hit a running knee to the back of the head for two. Shida went for a knee, Serena blocked it and Serena wrenched at the left knee of Shida. When Serena tried it again, Shida kicked Serena out of the ring. Shida jumped off the steps with a dropkick on the floor. Shida wanted to jump off a chair before that, but Serena tossed the chair away. Serena grabbed the left leg leading to her ramming the left leg against the apron. Serena applied a ring post Figure Four Leglock with JR correctly referencing Bret Hart for that since Bret loved to do it on the ring post. Shida countered Serena with an inside cradle. Shida with a kick to the head, then a knee, but when Shida tried another knee attack, Serena caught her with a half crab submission. Serena applied an inverted Figure Four Leglock, but Shida got to the bottom rope. Serena teased hitting Shida with the 50 win plaque, then Shida got it from her and the referee took it eye. Serena with an eye poke leading to an inside cradle. Shida countered a pin attempt, hooked the legs and sat on top for the pinfall win after 11 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Hikaru Shida
Analysis: ***1/2. This was terrific. I really liked the aggressiveness by Shida in the match as the babyface wanting payback for Serena’s cheap attack in the past. I would have liked to see Serena wrestle as more of a heel in this match since she turned heel a few weeks ago. The last few minutes got really exciting with the submissions by submissions after working on the left knee a lot and then Shida kept getting nearfalls. I like both women, so I had no preference in terms of who got the win.
The win means that Shida is now 50-10 in AEW and Shida is the first woman to 50 wins in AEW. Shida moves on to the next round of the tournament as well.
Post match, Serena with a chop block to the left knee. Serena brought a chair into the ring leading to Serena hitting Shida’s left knee multiple times. Serena applied the Serenity Lock submission that is like a half crab on the left knee. Some officials and AEW producer Jerry Lynn went to the ring with Serena finally letting go.
Analysis: Congrats to Shida for 50 wins. Vicious attack by Serena, who wasn’t heelish enough during the match, but then she was a badass after the match. It looks like this storyline isn’t done.
Lio Rush and Dante Martin were interviewed backstage by Tony Schiavone. They said that Mike Sydal was hurt, so Dante will face Matt Sydal on Rampage. It’s their third match with Rush saying he’ll be in Dante’s corner. Rush said that a lesson will be learned this Friday on Rampage.
(Commercial)
Dark Order’s Ten entered for a match. He is somehow ranked fifth in AEW rankings and has a 32-4 record in 2021. I don’t remember the last time he was in a match on Dynamite, but he gets a lot of wins on the Youtube shows. The announcers tried hard to put him over. Jon Moxley got a big ovation as usual for his entrance through the crowd.
AEW World Title Eliminator Tournament: Jon Moxley vs. Dark Order’s Ten
Moxley with a waistlock leading to a German Suplex along with kicks. Ten with a back elbow, then to the apron and Moxley hit him with a forearm. Moxley sent Ten face first into the ring steps. Moxley ripped off part of Ten’s mask and bit him in the head. Moxley whipped Ten into the ring post. Ten did a blade job after being sent into the ring post. Ten got some punches, then a pump kick and Moxley hit a clothesline. Moxley hit the Paradigm Shift for the pinfall win after two minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Jon Moxley
Analysis: * Easy and dominant win for Moxley as expected. I don’t know why they needed to do the blade job in such a short match, but I guess it puts over Moxley more. It’s nice of Tony Khan to book Moxley in a squash match in a tournament.
The win by Jon Moxley means that he faces Orange Cassidy in the next round of the tournament.
Moxley left through the crowd and walked somewhere backstage. He is such a fun guy.
FTR with Tully Blanchard were interviewed by Tony Schiavone. Cash Wheeler said they accepted the Lucha Brothers challenge. Tully said that they have hit the reset button and those guys have no idea of what’s coming at them. Dax Harwood said that Lucha Brothers will be in for the fight of their lives for the AEW Tag Team Titles. Dax said that they will go down as the greatest tag team of all time.
The music of Cody Rhodes hit and the fans booed as soon as they saw Cody was making his entrance.
(Commercial)
Let’s Hear from Cody Rhodes
Cody was joined in the ring by his coach Arn Anderson. The fans were booing before Cody said anything. Cody said believe it or not, he hears them. Cody said he hears it online, he hears old wrestling managers shouting at clouds on social media, and he heard them this Saturday. Cody said he heard the fans when Cody hooked Malakai Black, then he hit him with a Tiger Driver ’98 and Cody said he thought about hitting a very different move. Cody wondered would he have popped up, sneered or abused his Executive Vice President role or broken the stipulation that he could no longer go for the AEW World Championship. Cody said that the reason why he didn’t do it is because, respectfully, that’s too easy. Cody said that’s the easy way out. Cody said that as a fan you can cheer, you can boo, but if you are going to boo the narrative, boo the true narrative. Cody noted that nobody has a problem booing the man that signs the checks, but don’t forget the man who built this bank. They cheered. Cody tossed his shoes into the crowd.
Cody said he debuted in front of us at 20 years old with no kneepads, no muscles, he’s got a wife that is too hot for him, he’s got a brother that is a Hall of Fame player and Dustin Rhodes is likely better than Cody is. Cody added that he’s got a daughter that he barely deserves and a father that if he lives to be 300 years old, he will not be able to leave behind the cultural legacy that he did. Cody said that the easy way out is not the way. Cody: “I will not turn.” The fans booed that. Cody said that the reason is simple because he loves the fans very much and he’s loved them for his entire life. Cody said that if you think he’s gone Hollywood or away from where he should be, then he apologizes to all of us. Cody apologized to the Nightmare Family and he told Arn it is a damn honor to stand in the ring with him. Cody apologized, he told Arn he was right and they shook hands.
Analysis: A long promo from Cody about not wanting to turn heel for the many reasons he stated. Whether it’s genuine or not, I have no idea, but I’m leaning towards it being close to his true feelings. The fans booing a guy saying “I will not turn” is strange, but that’s the AEW crowd. They are too “smart” for their own good sometimes.
Andrade El Idolo entered with his assistant Jose with a neckbrace on poor Jose aka suit guy. Andrade said that the people don’t like Cody, but he doesn’t like the people. Andrade talked about Cody’s stupid choices like his stupid tattoo and it was a mistake to get in his business. Andrade said he’s young and he’s Andrade El Idolo. That led to Andrade getting into the ring saying he can make Cody his little bitch. The lights went out in the building, then they came back on and Malakai Black was standing beside Andrade. Black sprayed the black mist into Cody’s face leading to Andrade/Black beating up Cody along with the assistant. Pac ran out there for the save, which led to Pac beating up Black and Andrade to clear house. Pac ran the ropes going for a dive, but the heels backed up the ramp. Andrade sat in the ring with his two middle fingers up.
Analysis: This was an effective way to further along the stories with Pac likely teaming up with Cody against Black and Andrade at Full Gear on November 13. It’s an upper midcard feud, so that’s fine. The Andrade/Cody singles match is set for next week.
This Friday on Rampage, which is taped after Dynamite this week:
* World Title Eliminator Tournament Semifinal: Bryan Danielson vs. Eddie Kingston
* Dante Martin vs. Matt Sydal
* Trick or Treat Match: Britt Baker vs. Abadon
Next Wednesday on Dynamite:
* Cody Rhodes vs. Andrade El Idolo
* TBS Championship Tournament: Anna Jay vs. Jamie Hayter
* World Title Eliminator Tournament Semifinal: Orange Cassidy vs Jon Moxley.
The main event tag team match was next.

The Dark Order guys entered for tag team action. They were in Halloween costumes. The Super Elite foursome made their entrance dressed like The Ghostbuster at least in terms of jumpsuits. Kenny Omega is the AEW World Champion. Adam Cole did his “BAY BAY” yell while in the ring.
The Dark Order – Evil Uno, Stu Grayson, John Silver & Colt Cabana vs. The Super Elite – Kenny Omega, Adam Cole, Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson
Silver dressed as Bambi shoved Cole (as a Ghostbuster) down. Silver with kicks and a headbutt. Silver with a back body drop. Evil Uno tagged in dressed like a cowboy. Omega tagged in with a proton pack on his back. Uno missed a backsplash with Kenny turning his back, so Uno splashed the proton pack. Nakazawa was dressed as a baby and hit a running splash on Uno. Omega worked over Uno a bit, then Nick tagged in, Uno swept the leg and jumped on Matt’s back a bit. Uno with a boot to face. Grayson was dressed like Kratos and Colt Cabana tagged in with a costume similar to what Brandon Cutler wears. The four faces were in the ring, the four heels were in there and the faces hit body slams. That led to a picture in picture break.
(Commercial)
The match continued with three heels in the ring for some reason and Grayson did some athletic moves like a hurricanrana followed by a back kick. Cabana tagged in with a moonsault on both Bucks, then punches and an elbow smash. Cabana went for the Superman pin that got a two count. Cabana with a Flying Apple splash on Cole, Nick with a superkick on Cabana. Silver tagged in with a kick, then he beat up everybody on the floor and hit a pump kick in the ring. Silver with a release German Suplex with Nick hitting a moonsault bump. Nick and Cole went into the ring illegally with a double superkick. The Elite hit a triple superkick into a suplex into the knee, but Grayson saved the pin attempt. A bunch of guys went into the ring doing moves. They lost total control. Uno with a neckbreaker, Omega with a knee to Omega, Matt with a superkick to Silver. Matt went for a superkick on Grayson, who moved, so Matt hit a superkick on the useless referee Rick Knox. Matt with a low blow on Grayson, then the other Elite guys hit triple low blows on the other Dark Order guys. The Elite put on their proton packs and then hit jumping attacks using the proton packs as weapons. The Elite hit a team Powerbomb onto the proton packs in the ring. There was a guy in a horse costume, he went into the ring to talk to The Elite and Matt kicked him in the groin. BTE Trigger connected on the guy dressed like a horse. It was their buddy Brandon Cutler, who had his mouth taped shut. There was a guy in a Marshmallow Man costume in the ring, so he took the hood off to reveal it was “Hangman” Adam Page, who hit Matt with a clothesline. Page hit Omega with the Deadeye slam. Silver gave Matt the airplane spin into a slam called the Spin Doctor for the pinfall win after 13 minutes.
Winners by pinfall: The Dark Order – Evil Uno, Stu Grayson, John Silver & Colt Cabana
Analysis: *** It was fine. I should specify by saying that as a match it was okay for this kind of thing, but as an angle/story with Page making the shocking appearance and kicking ass, it was really well done. They needed to do something like that in the feud. The Elite didn’t follow the rules much at all, nor do they even try to. The referee bumping doesn’t really matter in a match where the referee does a shitty job of trying to enforce rules. Anyway, Silver pinning Matt does feel like a big deal for Silver, so at least that’s good for him.
The Dark Order guys celebrated with Adam Page in the ring. There were replays shown of what happened. That pop for Page’s reveal was pretty huge. The Elite guys were on the ramp making mean faces looking shocked about what happened while Page was in the ring with the Dark Order guys drinking beers. Hangman kept on celebrating. That was it.
Analysis: A lot of AEW shows have the heels standing tall, so it’s nice to see some faces looking triumphant at the end of the show.
Three Stars of the Show
- CM Punk
- Sammy Guevara
- MJF
The Scoreboard
This Week: 7.75 out of 10
Last Week: 7.25
2021 Average: 7.38
Final Thoughts
I thought it was a great episode from top to bottom. Nice balance of in-ring action and strong promos as well. If the main event was a bit more serious with less of the goofy shit then maybe I would have rated the show even higher. I get that The Elite guys love doing comedy bits on their youtube show so they want to do it in the ring too. I just don’t know if it’s the best thing to do in the main event of a TV show. With that said, I still liked Dynamite a lot this week.
The next AEW pay-per-view is Full Gear on Saturday, November 13. Here’s what we know so far.
AEW World Championship: Kenny Omega (c) vs. “Hangman” Adam Page
Finals of the AEW World Title Eliminator Tournament
AEW Tag Team Championships: Lucha Brothers (Penta El Zero Miedo & Rey Fenix) (c) vs. FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler)
AEW Women’s Championships: Britt Baker (c) vs. Tay Conti
Darby Allin vs. Maxwell Jacob Friedman
Minneapolis Street Fight 5-on-5 Tag Team Match: The Inner Circle (Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, Jake Hager, Santana & Ortiz) vs. American Top Team (Ethan Page, Scorpio Sky and three others)
