The John Report: AEW Dynamite 03/12/25 Review

AEW Dynamite March 12 Review

This week’s AEW Dynamite featured Orange Cassidy in the main event against Hechicero, words from Kenny Omega and MJF, and more.

AEW Revolution took place last Sunday in Los Angeles and I thought it was a great show, other than the main event. The match quality was strong throughout the show while there were some good stories going into it. The next PPV is called Dynasty on April 6th, which means they have less than one month to build up to it.

For this review, I’m going to go summary style for the matches and then play-by-play for the main event. I’m writing this on Thursday morning because I didn’t see it on Wednesday night.

This was AEW Dynamite episode #284 from the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. Follow me on Twitter/X @johnreport. Let’s get to it.

It’s Wednesday night and you know what that means. The commentary team was Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Taz.

Let’s Hear from Kenny Omega

The New AEW International Champion Kenny Omega made his entrance to a good ovation. Always good to see a Canadian holding a title.

“This is all still so wild to me. Before 2025 I was more than happy just to be able to stand in this ring and say, ‘Guys, I’m cleared. I can try doing this again.’ But what’s even more unbelievable is we’re barely in the new year and thanks to the support of you fans, the doctors, the support of somebody I never thought I’d call a friend Will Ospreay, not only am I back…” and the fans chanted “you deserve it” at him. Omega continued: “But I’m back with something I never thought I’d be able to hold ever again. That’s not just a title, but a singles title.”

“And though I’ve listed a whole slew of people I need to thank for me being here, there is one more person that I do need to think, though it may sound controversial, I’m going to thank you, Takeshita. You pushed me harder at the pay-per-view than I could have ever pushed myself. There’s one thing you did besides being a great champion, you made this belt a truly International Champion.

“When Tony Khan came up with the idea for this Dynasty Eliminator tournament, I thought it was a great idea.” Omega said he wants whoever has this belt to be the best on the planet. Omega said it didn’t matter what country you represent because he wants to face the best. Omega said he’d be watching closely and did his promo ending line. (Thanks to AEW’s website for the transcript.)

Analysis: It was a generic babyface promo from Omega celebrating his new championship and introducing the Dynasty Eliminator Tournament where the winner gets a shot at Omega’s International Title at Dynasty. Whoever wins that tourney is not beating Omega, but it’s a way to fill TV time in the coming weeks, I guess.

The Opps group made their entrance while Kenny Omega was walking toward the back. Katsuyori Shibata stared at Omega since Shibata is in the Dynasty Eliminator tournament.

The Opps – Samoa Joe, Hook & Katsuyori Shibata vs. Vinny Pacifico, Eli Theseus & Gabrial Ares

Joe worked over Eli with punches and chops. Joe decked Eli with a back elbow. Hook tagged in with a Northern Lights suplex on Ares. It was Shibata’s turn with chops on Vinny and a running dropkick. Shibata hit a running PK kick to the chest for the pinfall win after two minutes.

Winners by pinfall: The Opps – Samoa Joe, Hook & Katsuyori Shibata

Analysis: *1/2 A squash win for The Opps group. I assume this will eventually lead to them getting a shot at the Trios Tag Team Titles by the Death Riders group that rarely defends those titles.

Ricochet did a promo backstage complaining about his loss to Swerve Strickland. Ricochet talked about entering the Dynasty International Championship Elimination tournament. Ricochet said that he was giving Shibata the option to not show up on Collision because Shibata will lose to the man who is still destined to hold gold in AEW. Ricochet said it was his time.

Analysis: I think Ricochet may win that tournament and face Kenny Omega at Dynasty. That would be a great match.

A video package aired about the Revolution PPV.

It was announced that next week on AEW Dynamite in Omaha, Nebraska, Jon Moxley will defend the AEW World Title against Cope in a Street Fight. The winner faces Swerve for the AEW World Title at the Dynasty PPV.

Swerve Strickland was featured in a video talking about his win over Ricochet at Revolution which will lead to Swerve getting a World Title shot at the Dynasty PPV. Swerve mentioned winning the AEW World Title at Dynasty last year when he became the first black World Champion in AEW history, so he’d like to do it again this year. Cope walked in telling Swerve that he didn’t lose at Revolution and there’s still a chance that he is the AEW World Champion at Dynasty, so Swerve could be against Cope. Swerve said good. They touched fists as a sign of respect.

Analysis: The story is that Cope lost in his AEW World Title match to Jon Moxley, but Moxley beat Christian Cage after he “cashed in” to be in the match, so Cope is getting another shot.

(Commercial)

There was a promo featuring Jon Moxley talking into a camera as well. Moxley said that he should have put Cope on ice before Christian even showed up. Moxley admitted he underestimated Cope. Moxley claimed he knew he heard Cope, but he didn’t care because he kept coming forward. As he continued, Moxley said if Cope didn’t like the rules, then take the rules out and Moxley said call it a Street Fight if you want. Moxley said he underestimated Cope’s resolve, toughness and grit. Mox said that there are differences between amateurs and professionals. Moxley said he would never make the same mistake twice to end it.

Analysis: It’s a big match for next week. I think some fans want to see Moxley lose because the Death Riders story isn’t working that well. However, I think Moxley is going to lose to a younger guy and not Cope. If Cope does win then I don’t mind it either.

Hologram (w/Harleygram) & Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Brian Cage & Dralistico (w/The Beast Mortos)

Hologram is undefeated in AEW. He usually wrestles on Collision, which I don’t watch most weeks. Harleygram is Harley Cameron in a mask since she likes to do comedic things. Good for her.

Hobbs and Cage were fighting on the floor while the luchadores were fighting in the ring. Hologram sent Cage out of the ring, then Hologram dove onto Cage and Cage gave him a suplex on the floor. Good spot for sure. Not easy to do that. They went to a picture-in-picture break.

(Commercial)

Hologram was on the floor, so Mortos attacked him and Harleygram went over to Mortos to do some hip shaking to stop the attack. Hologram hit a running cross body block on Dralistico. Hobbs and Cage hit eachother with strikes leading to the “Meat” chants and Hobbs hit a powerslam for two. Dralistico went into the ring illegally to chop and superkick Hobbs. The referee is useless as usual. Cage hit a superplex on Hobbs and Dralistico completely missed on his springboard attack on Hobbs. After Hobbs hit a powerslam, Cage went in illegally with a clothesline because it’s AEW and illegal offense is never stopped by the useless referees. Hobbs hit a spinebuster on Cage on the apron. Hologram did a hurricanrana off Hobbs’ chest onto Cage. Dralistico tried a springboard attack on Hobbs, but Hobbs caught him and hit a spinebuster for the win. It went 11 minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Hologram & Powerhouse Hobbs

Analysis: ***1/4 This was a solid tag team match. It felt random with the tag team partners, but it was simply a way to put over Hobbs with a big win. There was some good action in this match although the illegal action also hurts the match in my eyes with guys randomly going into the ring to do moves. It would be nice to see AEW use Hobbs more than they do, but they never seem to want to push him that far.

After the match, Lance Archer and Mark Davis went down to ringside to stand beside their buddy Brian Cage and have a staredown with Hobbs.

The Hurt Syndicate was interviewed by Alicia Atout backstage after their win at Revolution. Shelton Benjamin wanted to know whose ass they are going to beat next. MVP said that they want to know who they get to beat next. MVP said somebody has got to be the baddest and they are the baddest. MVP wanted the guys to enjoy some fun, some sun, take a week off and MVP has got TV covered. MVP said they are the most dominant faction in pro wrestling today and MVP said his boys want to hurt people.

A video aired about “Timeless” Toni Storm’s Hollywood Ending win over Mariah May at the Revolution PPV.

Let’s Hear From “Timeless” Toni Storm

Toni Storm appeared with her Women’s World Title for a promo by the entrance. Storm said with stitches in her lip, staples in her head, and glass in her ass, she is here to say that this “tramp is still the champ.” The fans chanted “Toni” for him. Storm said it was her Hollywood Ending and a chunk of her heart would be gone forever, but when it comes to the Women’s World Title, it was well worth it. Storm said it was her honor to be AEW Women’s World Champion while claiming it’s the most talented locker room in all of pro wrestling (I don’t agree). Storm talked about the other World Title being in a briefcase and we have belt collectors referring to Mercedes Mone. Storm said that competing against her is like being at the zoo because she will eat you like a lion. Storm said you never hear her meow because she promised she is no pussy and said nobody swings like Toni Storm, so ladies put your keys in the bowl and let’s get this orgy started. Storm said it will be messy, it will be sweaty and it will always be timeless. Storm dropped the microphone. Megan Bayne showed up and hit Storm in the back to knock her down.

Analysis: It was nice of Megan Bayne to wait until Toni finished her speech to do the attack. Toni has a great delivery for her promos and the crowd always reacts to her. The line about the orgy was a bit out there even for her, but it got a reaction of course. That probably sets up Bayne for a title match since she’s undefeated according to Tony Schiavone. I’ll take Storm to win.

International Championship Eliminator Tournament: “Speedball” Mike Bailey vs. The Beast Mortos

It’s the official AEW debut of my fellow Canadian Mike Bailey. He was expected to join AEW at the start of the year, there was a video about him that aired recently and now he’s the “Wildcard” in the tournament. Good worker. Happy for Mike.

Bailey was in control early on with rapid fire kicks that knocked Mortos out of the ring. Mortos ran over Bailey with a shoulder tackle on the floor. Bailey got some offense, sent Mortos out of the ring again and Bailey hit a somersault dive onto Mortos on the floor. They went to a PIP break.

(Commercial)

The match continued with Bailey hitting a running SSP. Bailey hit a moonsault off the turnbuckle onto Mortos on the floor. Bailey hit a Powerbomb out of the corner for two. Mortos avoided a top rope SSP leading to Mortos hitting a Samoan Drop for two. They went to the turnbuckle where Mortos hit a powerslam off the top rope. That was an impressive spot. Mortos hit a backbreaker and a discus lariat. Bailey countered Mortos with a hurricanrana, a kick, and a moonsault knee drop to the ribs. Bailey hit a spinning kick to the head for the pinfall win. It went 11 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: “Speedball” Mike Bailey

Analysis: ***1/2 A very good match to showcase Bailey as a talented athlete. They weren’t going to have Bailey lose his first AEW match while Mortos is a guy who has good matches, so it was smart to have Mortos as Bailey’s first opponent. Bailey is a fun guy to watch and the fans got a taste of that here.

The Patriarchy group was shown with Christian Cage joined by Nick Wayne, Kip Sabian & Mother Wayne while Renee Paquette asked Cage why he chose to cash in his contract at Revolution. Cage said that Renee is related to Jon Moxley so he didn’t want to talk to her. Cage told Renee to leave. Cage said he demanded his contract be returned to him. Cage claimed that he wanted it as a singles match against Cope and the referee made it a triple threat match. Cage said he didn’t tap out and he didn’t pass out. Cage said he was relegating his breathing while getting ready to turn the hold around. Nick Wayne said that Cage was just making excuses. Nick said that he lied to himself, to the people, and to the group. Nick said that Cage owes them an explanation and an apology. Cage shoved Nick, Mother stepped up to Christian and Cage warned her that he would send her back to Waffle House. Cage asked Nick how many World Titles has he ever won. Cage asked Nick how many titles did his biological father win? Cage said Nick should be happy that Cage found him so he doesn’t end up like his father, a coward who died in front of his mother’s face. Cage said that would never happen to him. Cage said he is going to be the AEW World Champion if it’s the last thing he does on this Earth. Cage told Nick to keep riding his coattails because the next time they have this conversation would be the last time, so Cage left.

Analysis: That was intense by Christian, who does a terrific job of being the jerk heel “parent” character that he is. They were obviously going to have Nick Wayne split from Christian at some point in this story and since it’s been a long time, it makes sense to start setting that up. I think Nick can be a good babyface wrestler with a bright future, so it’s only a matter of time until the split happens. I don’t think Christian will be AEW World Champion like he says either, but we’ll see if that happens down the road at some point.

A clip aired from AEW Revolution where MJF punched a fake mirror while Lexy Nair tried to interview him. MJF yelled at her to get out so she left.

Let’s Hear from MJF

Maxwell Jacob Friedman made his entrance wearing dress clothes, including the scarf as usual. MJF said he had a splitting headache, his hand hurts, his body hurts and what hurts the most is everybody knew he had the match won on Sunday. MJF said that the Cowardly Cowboy cheapshotted him and beat him as he did in 2019, so he said congrats to Hangman. MJF claimed that he was ten times smarter than Page and smarter than his fans ever will be. MJF said he would get his, Cowboy. MJF said that this thing ain’t over, not by a longshot.

The Hurt Syndicate music played as MVP walked out in a suit along with a cane. The fans like the “We Hurt People” part of the song. It’s a good song.

MJF: “MVP.”

MVP: “MJF.”

They embraced with a hug. MJF wondered what he was doing there. MVP spoke and I’ll use the AEW website transcript for it.

MVP: “I’ve been doing well, but I came out here to talk to you. I’m proud of you. You’re not the same 18-year-old kid I met eight years ago. When young MJF was 18 years old, he once volunteered to drive me on a trip, just to ask questions about the professional wrestling business.

“His intelligence early on showed me this was a kid to be reckoned with. And we got to meet long after that at a small indie show, and I saw you had a huge aura. You had a certain intuition that you can’t teach. You told me back then you’d be a heavyweight main event World Champion, and you did everything you said you were going to do, and it’s for that reason that I’m proud of you. But what I’m not proud of, and what I know you can’t possibly be proud of, is what happened to you on Sunday. What are you doing, man? Why are you out here talking to you about these people about what happened to you on Sunday? How come you’re not angry? How come you’re not hurting people? You see, I know the answer to that question. You have lost your edge. The boys in the back don’t respect you anymore. Even worse, they don’t fear you. You know who they do fear? They fear The Hurt Syndicate. And that, my friend, is what you are missing.

“I was able to help you once a long time ago and just perhaps I may be able to help you again. Where MVP and the Hurt Syndicate go, championships go as well. This business card is a golden ticket. It’s an opportunity to change your career. Maybe it’s time for you and me to talk some business.”

At that point, MVP prevented Max with a business card. Max said he respected MVP. However, MJF is not the kid he was all those years ago while saying he doesn’t need his help or his advice. MJF said that he was the World Champion for 406 consecutive days. MVP told MJF to focus on the word “was” and MVP gave MJF his card. MVP left.

Analysis: That was a strong promo from two very good talkers. It teases the idea of MJF working with The Hurt Syndicate group even though MJF is usually a guy who is on his own. I’m not sure where it’s going, but it seems like the start of a long-term story and that’s cool with me because I like the guys involved in this story.

Max Caster was in the ring calling himself the “Best Wrestler Alive.” Caster called his fans the “Maxamanicas” and claimed he had the most popular shirt in AEW. Heels lie. Caster claimed he was the most popular member of The Acclaimed. Caster tried his lame chant, so the fans booed him. Max mentioned it was time for his open challenge while wondering who could survive against the Best Wrestler Alive.

Konosuke Takeshita vs. Max Caster

The bell rang. The fans chanted “you f**ked up” at Max, who thanked the fans for their concern. Max claimed he would kill him, so what are they doing? Max wondered what the Don Callis Family can do for the best wrestler alive if he main evented the Tokyo Dome. Max mentioned a record contract or maybe he could do what Takeshita couldn’t do, which is beat Kenny Omega. Takeshita hit an elbow to the head. Takeshita picked Max up and hit the Raging Fire slam for two. It went over one minute thanks to Max talking for so long.

Winner by pinfall: Konosuke Takeshita

Analysis: * Squash city to give Takeshita a win. This gimmick of Caster is not working very well. I understand it’s supposed to be a cheesy gimmick. I just don’t think it’s effective or a good use of TV time.

A video aired about Chris Jericho’s cheap attack with The Learning Tree on Gravity and Bandido during the Revolution pre-show.

Chris Jericho, the ROH World Champion, had Gravity’s mask in his hand for a backstage promo. “The temperature in the room has changed, hasn’t it Bandido? I stole your brother’s mask and I scared your precious sister. I made your mother cry in front of you, Bandido. How do you come back from that and look her in the eye again knowing the disappointment she has for you. Your life has changed forever, Bandido.” Jericho said that’s not a good thing and he tossed the mask down.

Analysis: It furthers the story that will lead to Bandido likely being the one who ends Chris Jericho’s ROH World Title win. It makes sense as a feud that will end with a title change. I don’t watch ROH, though, so my interest is low.

Willow Nightingale vs. Penelope Ford

There was a body slam and cross body block from Willow early on. Ford got some offense sending Willow into the turnbuckle followed by a dropkick. Ford hit a knee drop on the apron as they went to a PIP break.

(Commercial)

Willow was in control with some strikes along with a spinebuster for two. Ford managed to wrench on Willow’s right arm against the top rope. Ford hit a springboard cross body block for two. Willow came back with a powerslam. Ford tried a move, Willow overpowered her and Willow hit the Pounce to knock Ford down for the pinfall win after about 8 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Willow Nightingale

Analysis: **3/4 It’s the typical AEW women’s TV match getting under ten minutes with a commercial break. The action was okay although the fans really didn’t react to much of what Ford did. This was about giving Willow a win. I don’t remember Ford winning a singles match on AEW TV, so you know what the result was going to be here.

After the match, Ford hit Willow in the ribs with a chair and a gentle chair shot to the back. Kris Statlander made the save with a running dropkick on Ford. Kris picked Willow up, then Willow wasn’t thrilled about that and Kris tried to talk to her. Megan Bayne went into the ring with a double clothesline. Bayne hit her F5 slam off the shoulders.

Analysis: The push for Megan Bayne continues since it was her second time on the show. Bayne has faced Kris before. They are pushing the story that Kris was trying to be friends with Willow again after Kris turned on Willow last year.

Mercedes Mone, the TBS Champion who has three titles, was interviewed by Renee Paquette. Mone is now 15-0 in TBS Championship matches. Billie Starkz walked in because Mone invited her. Billie said that Mone has accomplished a lot. Billie said she was the inaugural ROH TV Champion at 19. Billie said that they both started young and wrestling is their lives. Billie said she’s looking for a change and she’s looking to change into a champion. Mone laughed at her. Mone said Billie is out of her league and she’ll show her next week that there’s a price to pay against Mercedes Mone. Mone pushed her on the head and left.

Analysis: That should be a win for Mercedes Mone over Billie Starkz next week. They are excited about Billie’s future and with good reason because she’s a talented young woman.

Will Ospreay Interview

Tony Schiavone interviewed Will Ospreay for an interview. Will was limping on his way out to the ring.

Will: “I made it out of Sunday alive. The scariest bit for me is that Kyle Fletcher, at that age, I was struggling to keep up with him. One day, Kyle Fletcher will be a World champion. And I hope when we meet again one day, I can still say I’m the better man. I’m in a bit of trouble because I lied to my wife about the cage match.”

Will told a story about how she told him not to do anything stupid off the cage. Will went on to remind us about how he went on top of the cage and did that crazy spot. Will said he had 15 missed calls from his wife. Will claimed that he managed to charm his way out of it.

Will: “I said I want to be the guy and to be the guy, there should be something around my waist, right? But next week Cope’s got his title match, and then at Dynasty, Swerve’s got his title shot. So it leaves me to ask when do I call my shot? It makes me wonder when does it matter most.”

At that point, Will looked up at the All In Texas banner. That’s on July 12th.

Will: “I want to be in the main event on Saturday, 12th of July at All In: Texas. The only way I can get there is by entering the Owen Hart Tournament. I plan on going through every single person who stands in my way! If it is you Cope, it will be my pleasure. If it is Swerve, my boy, I can’t wait for that rematch. If it’s Moxley, the one true king, a warning: an assassin is coming for the throne! I want to be the World champion because they trust him with AEW, I know I can do it, I want to be the World Champion because my name is Will Ospreay, and I am on another level!” Will left to cheers.

Analysis: I think Will Ospreay may win the Owen Hart Memorial Tournament which leads to the winner getting a World Title shot at AEW All In. I’m not sure if Jon Moxley is going to be the champion for that long, but I do think somebody like Ospreay could be the guy to win the title.

Jay White was interviewed by Renee Paquette. White congratulated Will Ospreay for his win on Revolution and praised him for calling his shot. White said if Will wants to be champion then they have to keep him away from White like they’ve always done. White said everybody wanted to know if he hit Cope with the briefcase on purpose. White asked the fans and most said “no.” White said he didn’t do it on purpose. White said he failed to help Cope become the World Champion. White said that Cope gets another shot next week. White mentioned Swerve having the next title shot. White talked about how he had his sights on the AEW World Title and left.

Analysis: White claiming that he didn’t mean to hit Cope during the title match could be true, but perhaps that’s a lie and maybe White will cost Cope the AEW World Title in the Street Fight next week. I think it’s possible leading to White going back into a heel role, which is better for him.

(Commercial)

“Hangman” Adam Page was walking around backstage when Renee Paquette asked him what he wanted to do next. Maxwell Jacob Friedman walked up to Page and bumped him, so Reene left. Page said that Max tried to light Page on fire last week and said he didn’t believe it. Page said when you do something like that, you have to really mean it. Page said that MJF cared about what the people say about him. MJF said that Page smelled like rotten ass so he took a step back. MJF said what happens next in the story is that they are 1-1 and now MJF goes on to become a multiple-time World Champion, a first ballot Hall of Famer and one of the greatest of all time. MJF said that Page will try to climb the mountain and as he’s about to reach the pinnacle, he’ll tumble all the way down. MJF said Page’s biggest insecurity is he knows he doesn’t deserve the people’s love. MJF said that Page will not win the big one and he’ll never make the fans proud. MJF said he’ll win the World Title over and over again and he’ll laugh at Page up that mountain. Page: “We’ll see, won’t we?” MJF left.

Analysis: That is a rivalry that will be a part of AEW for many more years ahead. It’s likely on pause for now after Page beat MJF at Revolution, but it can pick up any time in the future. That’s fine with me because I like both guys a lot. This was a good promo exchange with a lot of intensity. MJF called himself a first ballot Hall of Famer as well. What Hall of Fame? I guess AEW will create one in a few years.

Jim Ross joined commentary for this main event.

Orange Cassidy entered first with 98 career wins in AEW. Hechicero has a 5-4 career record in AEW and now he’s main eventing Dynamite for some reason.

International Championship Eliminator Tournament: Orange Cassidy vs. Hechicero

They did some comedy spots early. Orange walked across the top rope while Hechicero was nice enough to hold his hand. Orange did his hand in the pockets hurricanrana. Hechicero tried a dropkick, Orange avoided it and Orange did a rollup using his legs while his hands were in his pocket. They went to a PIP break.

(Commercial)

Hechicero was in control with chops. Orange tried to break free, but Hechicero grabbed him in a sleeper while by the ropes. Hechicero wrenched on the right knee along with a stomp to the knee. Orange kicked Hechicero down and hit a cross body block off the top. Hechicero spun Orange around leading to a hammerlock backbreaker. Orange hit a twisting DDT on Hechicero. Orange tried to jump up, but then he sold the knee injury. Orange jumped off the top with the worst elbow drop and Hechicero caught him with an armbar submission. Orange got his right foot on the bottom rope to force the break. Orange decided to stop selling the knee injury, spun around Hechicero, and trapped him in the Mouse Trap pinning predicament for the pinfall win after 10 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Orange Cassidy

Analysis: *** It was a decent match with an obvious result. It wasn’t given enough time to be a great match. I also don’t think anybody watching this thought that Hechicero had a shot to win this match. Most of the match was Hechicero on offense and then Orange made the comeback to get the win.

After the match, “Speedball” Mike Bailey stared at Orange Cassidy from a distance. They will be part of a four-way match on AEW Dynamite next week for a shot at the International Title. The two opponents will be determined in matches on Collision. That was the end of the show.

Final Thoughts on AEW Dynamite

This was a weaker show. There was a lot of talking and some of the promos were good, but some of them just felt like filler. I am intrigued by what will happen after the MJF-MVP talk, but other than that, most of the promos weren’t interesting. They had all this positive momentum going into Revolution and then this show felt like a step back. Good showing by “Speedball” Mike Bailey in his debut, at least.

In terms of matches, it was an average show by AEW’s standards. Most AEW shows have better matches than what we have here. Hechicero is not a main event talent in this company, yet the booker loves Orange Cassidy so it’s a main event match. It was a weak main event. Normally after Dynamite, Tony Khan will tweet about how great of a show it was. I didn’t see him do that this week. Just saying.

The good news for AEW is next week’s show looks a lot stronger thanks to the Moxley-Cope Street Fight for the AEW World Title, so that will be a big deal and hopefully better than their Revolution match was.
