The John Report: WWE Smackdown 02/11/22 Review

wwe smackdown feb 11

This week’s WWE Smackdown featured Charlotte Flair defending the SD Women’s Title against Naomi while Roman Reigns and Goldberg continued their rivalry.

This Smackdown was a night with back-to-back shows for the fans in New Orleans. The reason for that is because next week’s Smackdown is on February 18, which is one day before Elimination Chamber in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, February 19, so WWE decided to tape it a week in advance. It makes sense since it’s a long trip to Saudi Arabia. For the wrestlers not going to Saudi Arabia, they’ll get a couple of weeks off, which is nice for them.

As for me, I am extremely excited about my Los Angeles Rams facing the Cincinnati Bengals. My score prediction is 34-20 for the Rams. I think they’re going to jump out to a big lead, the Bengals might make it close in the second half for a bit and then the Rams pull away. I think the Bengals bad O-Line is going to hurt them a lot, so the Bengals offense will struggle at times due to the Rams impressive pass rush led by Aaron Donald, Von Miller and Leonard Floyd while the pass defense behind them is pretty good too. For MVP I’ll go with Matthew Stafford throwing three TDs, but Cooper Kupp might win because I think he’ll go for about 150 yards and two TDs. The Bengals are a nice story. If it wasn’t against my team maybe I’d back them. I just think the Rams are better, especially on defense and defense wins championships. I also predict I will be ridiculously hammered on Sunday night and in a good mood for a long time. That’s my favorite team in my favorite sport with over 35 years of fandom. Let’s go Rams! #RamsHouse

From the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, this is Smackdown for episode #1173. Follow me on Twitter @johnreport. Let’s get to it.

The opening video package featured highlights of Smackdown last week when Ronda Rousey told Smackdown Women’s Charlotte Flair that Ronda is choosing to face Charlotte at WrestleMania. Rousey: “I’ll see you at WrestleMania, bitch.” Charlotte told Ronda this title is her baby and she is prettier than Ronda’s baby. Sonya Deville got involved, so Charlotte escaped while Ronda applied an armbar to Deville.

The commentary team of Michael Cole and Corey Graves welcomed us to the show. Corey was filling in for Pat McAfee who is at the Super Bowl doing his YouTube show there all week.

Analysis: I’ll miss Pat. I watched a lot of his shows at the Super Bowl city of LA for most of the week. He does a great job. I don’t mind Graves, though. He’s fine as a heel announcer.

Let’s Hear from Sonya Deville

Sonya Deville was in the ring with a sling on her left arm. Sonya said she had to acknowledge the unprovoked attack by Ronda Rousey. Sonya said that people like Ronda and Naomi have no respect for authority. Sonya said she didn’t care who it was because there will be consequences for her actions. Sonya claimed that she petitioned upper management that Rousey be fined $100,000 and effective immediately, Rousey should be suspended indefinitely.

Adam Pearce, the other WWE Official, said he had an email from WWE Chairman Vince McMahon responding to Sonya’s petition. Vince’s email said that Sonya had taken matters into her own hands and abusing her power. Vince claimed he couldn’t stand a WWE Official abusing their power (an interesting line coming from him) while Vince declined Sonya’s petition to suspend Rousey. Vince said that Sonya cannot lay her hands on Naomi in any way tonight especially during Naomi’s title match against Charlotte Flair. Pearce read Vince saying that if Sonya disobeys her then Sonya’s job will be in serious jeopardy.

Naomi walked down to the ring for a promo. Naomi got in the ring with Sonya noting that Mr. McMahon said that Sonya can’t lay a hand on Naomi, but he never said a thing about Naomi laying a hand on Sonya. Naomi slapped Sonya in the face to knock Sonya on her ass. Naomi left happily.

Analysis: I thought they might fire Sonya as a WWE Official and say she’s just a wrestler now, but they didn’t go that far with it. Naomi slapping Sonya to knock her on her ass was a feel-good moment since Sonya has had issues with Naomi for a long time. Anyway, it didn’t drag on too long. It was fine.

A replay was shown of New Day beating Los Lotharios.

The New Day’s Big E and Kofi Kingston made their entrance. They are in action against Los Lotharios again. WWE loves rematches.

(Commercial)

A video aired about Bobby Lashley defending the WWE Championship against Brock Lesnar, Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, Austin Theory and Riddle at Elimination Chamber on February 19.

Los Lotharios did a quick interview with Kayla Braxton in the backstage area. They talked about how they are fierce competitors and lethal lovers. Sure.

While Los Lotharios made their entrance, they found a pretty woman in the aisle for a Kiss Cam segment. The woman was attractive (shocking). The guys kissed her on the cheek.

The New Day (Big E & Kofi Kingston) vs. Los Lotharios (Angel & Humberto)

They had a really good match last week, so here we go again. Angel tried a waistlock, but Big E easily powered out of it. Kofi tagged in with a leap over Big E leading to a leg drop on Angel. Humberto tagged in with forearms to the back, Kofi tripped him up with forearms while on the apron and Big E tagged in with a running splash on the apron. Angel charged, Kofi sent him out of the ring, Kofi ran the ropes, Big E launched him and Kofi landed on top of both Lotharios on the floor with a standing cross body attack. They went to break there.

(Commercial)

The match returned with Angel hitting Big E with a springboard kick during the break leading to a chinlock. After Big E broke free, Angel pulled off the pants to reveal the tights and then Big E came back with a belly-to-belly side slam. Kofi got the tag against Humberto with a chop off the top, then a dropkick and a clothesline. Kofi sent Angel out of the ring followed by a Boom Drop double leg drop on Humberto. Kofi went for the kick, Humberto ducked and got a rollup for two. Kofi with a jumping kick to the head. Big E tagged in, Angel went after Kofi on the apron, so Kofi did a hurricanrana to Angel into the barricade. Kofi kicked Humberto, Big E held Humberto in a Powerbomb position and Kofi jumped off the top with a double foot stomp into a Powerbomb for two because Angel made the save. A backstabber to Big E sent Big E out of the ring. Angel jumped off the middle rope onto a standing Big E on the floor. Humberto hit an impressive moonsault off the top onto Kofi in the ring for two. Good nearfall right there. Kofi avoided a double team attack leading to a Trouble in Paradise on Humberto. Angle managed to roll up Kofi and use his body for leverage (not a ROLLUP OF DEATH~!) for the pinfall win after 11 minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Los Lotharios (Angel & Humberto)

Analysis: ***1/4 Good match as usual from these teams. It’s 50/50 booking once again since New Day beat Los Lotharios last week, so it’s no surprise that New Day lost here. I thought maybe we’d see something cheaper for the finish, but it was totally clean with Angel pinning Kofi. They did a nice job with the nearfalls with Kofi getting the double foot stomp off the top for two and then Humberto’s moonsault as well. Big E well as the face in peril early. When Kofi got the hot tag, the pace really picked up. It was booked well. I just don’t love 50/50 booking or WWE booking rematches so often on Smackdown.

The Viking Raiders were about to be interviewed. However, Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Usos showed up and beat them up. The Usos stole some of their viking headgear.

An interview with Roman Reigns is up next.

(Commercial)

The Progressive Match Flo replay showed last week’s Smackdown when Roman Reigns was confronted by Bill Goldberg. It led to the official announcement of Reigns defending the Universal Title vs. Goldberg at Elimination Chamber.

Roman Reigns Interview

Roman Reigns, the Universal Champion, was seated in a chair with Paul Heyman behind him and Michael Cole was sitting in another chair for an interview. Cole mentioned Goldberg winning 173 matches in WCW, then beat Hulk Hogan for the WCW Championship and Reigns said that was pretty good. Reigns said if he was in WCW they’d still be in business. Cole mentioned Goldberg won that Universal Championship twice with Cole noting Goldberg beat Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series (2016) in 86 seconds. They showed some clips. I was at that match live. Reigns said nobody cares about Brock Lesnar “the farmer” anymore and Heyman said he loves Reigns. Roman said nobody cares about Goldberg as a former Universal Champion because Reigns is there. Cole mentioned this Reigns-Goldberg match was supposed to take place at WrestleMania two years ago and he asked if Roman had added pressure. Roman said the pressure is on Goldberg. Roman said that two years ago he might have had a chance, but everything has changed and Roman is untouchable now. Reigns said he’s going to smash Goldberg. Heyman said this is not a prediction, it’s a spoiler. Reigns said: “I’m going to Goldberg…Goldberg.” End interview.

Analysis: That last line meant that he’s going to dominate Goldberg and beat him in a dominant manner. I liked the interview format because it was different than a regular backstage interview. Reigns and Heyman were full of confidence as you might expect. Reigns did have a good point about how if it was two years ago maybe Goldberg could win, but two years ago was before this “Tribal Chief” heel dominant version of Reigns, so it was a smart line by Reigns there. I doubt many people think Reigns will lose to Goldberg. I certainly do not think that.

There were videos shown of Aliyah beating Natalya three different times – by pinfall in 3.17 seconds, then by disqualification and last week by countout.

Aliyah made her entrance for yet another match against Natalya.

(Commercial)

Natalya made her entrance. Natalya had the Guinness Book of World Records book with her since she’s a three-time World Record holder or at least it’s a book with that as the cover on it.

Natalya vs. Aliyah

They said that this match can only be won by pinfall or submission.

Natalya got aside headlock, then she broke free and hit a shoulder tackle. Aliyah used the ropes to jump over Natalya, then a leap over Natalya on the mat and Aliyah got a sunset flip for two. Natalya with a standing side kick to the head followed by the Michinoku Driver for a two count. Aliyah got a rollup for two. Aliyah with a Thesz Press followed by punches and then Aliyah came back with a bulldog counter. Aliyah applied a single-leg crab submission, but Natalya powered out of it. Natalya applied the Sharpshooter, Aliyah got to the ropes, Aliyah crawled to the bottom rope and there was no disqualification, so Aliyah tapped out while against the ropes. It went about three minutes.

Winner by submission: Natalya

Analysis: *1/2 Natalya finally gets a win after doing the job for Aliyah on multiple occasions. I thought Aliyah looked okay, but sometimes she does moves where it looks like she’s not aggressive enough. She’s young and will get better hopefully. Working with a veteran like Natalya will help Aliyah, so that’s why they are having matches.

After the match, Natalya stomped on Aliyah and wanted another Sharpshooter, but “The Protector” Xia Li ran out there for the save. Li with punches, a big knee, kicks to the body and Natalya retreated under the bottom rope to the floor.

Analysis: That sets up an obvious match with Natalya facing Xia Li in the future. They could also have Natalya team up with another heel against Xia Li and Aliyah.

A video aired about Black History Month featuring Rocky Johnson. The video was narrated by his son Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. That’s awesome that they got Rock to do that. Rocky and Tony Atlas became the first African American Tag Team Champions. It was a huge celebration when they won. Rock mentioned when his dad married his mom, they had Rock and Rock went on to further his dad’s legacy. They showed when The Rock inducted Rocky Johnson into the WWE Hall of Fame. That was a great speech. Rocky said he wanted to be remembered for paving the road for all athletes. Rock: “Thank you dad for paving the way. I’ll see you down the road.” Rock tweeted about it as you could see below.

Analysis: That was cool. Rock’s dad Rocky Johnson died a few years ago. I think Rocky and Tony Atlas being the first black Tag Team Champions was very important to Rocky. You can just see in the clip how excited the wrestlers were as well as the crowd. It’s awesome that WWE got Rock to do the voiceover for that.

Sami Zayn made his entrance to host his talk show/podcast.

Analysis: The first hour of Smackdown only had two matches totaling about 15 minutes. I miss when Smackdown had more in-ring action.

(Commercial)

Charlotte Flair was shown backstage with her Smackdown Women’s Title mentioning that she was the main event.

Johnny Knoxville was shown earlier in the day at a WWE popup store in Los Angeles. Knoxville wrote “LOSER” on a Sami Zayn photo. Knoxville also destroyed a “Sami Zayn Forever” shirt that is a knockoff of Jackass Forever

Sami Zayn Hosts In-Zayn

Sami Zayn was in the ring hosting his live podcast In-Zayn with the fans booing him. Zayn ripped on Johnny Knoxville a bit. Zayn said that he will offer some vegan recipes for the people of New Orleans, which drew boos.

Rick Boogs provided the interruption with his guitar and Boogs was in his wrestling gear. Boogs played the guitar for the entrance of Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura. Graves said Pat McAfee is probably dancing on a table somewhere for the Nakamura entrance. Next week on Smackdown it’s Nakamura vs. Zayn for the IC Title.

Zayn said that for over six weeks, he has been the number one contender for that championship and Nakamura has been ducking him. Zayn said he can’t wait to see the look on Nakamura’s face when Zayn beats him to reclaim his Intercontinental Championship. Zayn said that they have been working with Johnny Knoxville to distract Zayn. Nakamura asked if Sami has seen the movie – Sami thought he meant Jackass Forever so Sami mentioned he was kicked out of the red carpet premiere – and Nakamura said that the movie Jackass Defeated about Sami losing. Sami ripped on Boogs for being a meathead with a guitar. Sami said that Boogs can lift all he wants and play his guitar, so Boogs told him to shut up. When Boogs touched the microphone, it looked like he was shocked and Boogs went down. Zayn hit a Helluva Kick on Nakamura, which meant both faces were down while Zayn left. Zayn left triumphantly.

Analysis: It was effective as a segment to give Zayn the advantage for once since he is made to look like a fool a lot of the time. Nakamura and Boogs didn’t touch the microphone until Boogs put his hands on it, so then Zayn rigged it so it would zap him and Zayn hit the Helluva Kick on Nakamura as a cheap shot. I’m looking forward to the Nakamura-Zayn match next week even though it’s being taped this week. (WWE actually posted a spoiler on their website.)

A replay aired from last week on Smackdown when Drew McIntyre beat up Madcap Moss with a Claymore Kick and warning Happy Corbin after.

Happy Corbin was backstage with Madcap Moss, who had a black eye on his right eye. Corbin mentioned his match with Cesaro, then Moss said he’s going to stay in the back and get his eye checked out. Moss said maybe the doctor won’t let him face Drew McIntyre at Elimination Chamber.

Happy Corbin made his entrance for singles action.

(Commercial)

An image was shown of a billboard in Saudi Arabia showing the Becky Lynch-Lita graphic for Elimination Chamber. They were celebrating women being on a billboard there.

Cesaro vs. Happy Corbin

Corbin was aggressive punches and he sent Cesaro into the turnbuckle. Corbin with a suplex. Corbin applied elbows to the shoulder followed by a chinlock. Cesaro fought out of that, he was sent into the ropes and Corbin hit the Deep Six slam for a two count. Corbin set up Cesaro on the middle rope, Cesaro fought back with punches and Cesaro jumped off the middle rope leading to a suplex. Cesaro with uppercuts, Corbin was sent out of the ring and back in with Cesaro hitting an uppercut. Cesaro with a clothesline sending Cesaro out of the ring. Cesaro with a running uppercut against the barricade. Back in the ring, Cesaro with a springboard corkscrew uppercut. Cesaro charged into an elbow, Cesaro with a boot, Corbin with a clothesline and Corbin hit the End of Days slam for the pinfall win after four minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Happy Corbin

Analysis: ** Poor Cesaro. He is so underused. Corbin was in control early Cesaro was impressive in making a comeback and then Corbin finished him off easily. Since they might be doing Corbin vs. McIntyre at WrestleMania, it makes sense to give Corbin more wins.

Corbin celebrated the win with Cole saying that Corbin was undefeated since becoming happy last summer. I don’t know if that’s true, but it might be true in singles matches.

Madcap Moss was shown in the trainer’s room with Moss telling a “WWE Medical” guy that he had blurry vision, so maybe he should not be cleared to wrestle at Elimination Chamber. The trainer told him to close his eyes and open his eye. When Moss opened his eye, Moss said he saw a sword because Drew McIntyre was there with him. Moss admitted to Drew that his vision was fine. Drew said he was talking to Adam Pearce, so now their match at Elimination Chamber is Falls Count Anywhere with Drew pointing out that means that anything goes. Drew taunted him with the sword.

Analysis: I don’t know why it needs to be Falls Count Anywhere. Maybe they have some creative finish in mind. Drew should win.

An interview with Goldberg is up next.

(Commercial)

Charlotte Flair was standing backstage. She said: “Tonight, I’m snuffing out Naomi’s glow.” She laughed and winked.

Bill Goldberg Interview

Bill Goldberg was seated backstage with Michael Cole for his own sitdown interview like Roman Reigns did earlier. Goldberg told Cole not to take this personally and said that he loved him like a brother. Cole said there are whispers out there that this may be one comeback too many. Goldberg said that he finally realized he doesn’t give a damn what anybody thinks – not Cole, not Reigns and no one. Goldberg said that this comeback will stick and be everlasting while reminding people of the old Goldberg. Cole mentioned the match not happening two years ago. Goldberg said that he’s still the same Goldberg and Roman is going to get what he deserves. Cole said that Reigns will make Goldberg “acknowledge him” and “Goldberg…Goldberg” with Goldberg said he acknowledged Reigns as his next victim. Goldberg said that Reigns will acknowledge him as the Universal Champion and he’s going to main event WrestleMania against Brock Lesnar. Goldberg added in response to the “Goldberg…Goldberg” line, Goldberg said there is only one him and it ain’t going to happen.

Analysis: This was good. Goldberg is a lot better in that kind of environment instead of being in the ring doing a promo. Goldberg’s not a great talker, but when he’s sitting down like that he looks a lot more comfortable. I like the confidence shown by Goldberg. I think Goldberg should have mentioned beating Bobby Lashley in Saudi Arabia in his last match, but they didn’t do that. If they did mention that, it would be a way to put over Goldberg some more going into his title match with Reigns.

They replayed the opening segment with Naomi slapping Sonya Deville.

Naomi made her entrance for the main event.

(Commercial)

A video aired about a NASCAR race in Los Angeles with Sheamus on hand to wave the green flag to start the race. Good job Sheamus.

Next Friday on Smackdown: Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Goldberg go face to face. Also, Shinsuke Nakamura defends the Intercontinental Championship against Sami Zayn. Once again, that’s a taped show that was taped after this week’s Smackdown.

Charlotte Flair made the entrance as the Smackdown Women’s Champion while wearing her robe on her way to the ring. The women stood in the ring for the championship introductions. Cheers for Naomi and boos for Charlotte as usual.

Smackdown Women’s Championship: Charlotte Flair vs. Naomi

There were over 20 minutes left for this match. Flair ran over Naomi with a shoulder tackle. Flair went off the ropes leading to a takedown again, but Naomi got back up with a headscissors. Naomi sent Flair over the top to the apron. Naomi with a kick to knock Flair down to the floor. Naomi jumped over the top with a twisting dive onto Flair on the floor. That led to a break.

(Commercial)

The match continued with Flair in control as she sent Naomi into the turnbuckle followed by Flair putting her boot in Naomi’s face. Naomi came back with two boots to the face. Flair sent Naomi to the apron, Naomi with a kick and Naomi jumped off the top with a cross body block for two. Flair with a back elbow to break a waistlock and Charlotte pulled Naomi off the middle ropes for a two count. Charlotte wrapped her legs around the head leading to some knee driving into the mat. Flair did some taunting, so Naomi avoided a kick and kicked the leg. Naomi with a jawbreaker followed by a rollup for two. Flair came back with chops, Naomi off the ropes and Flair hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for two. Charlotte pulled on Naomi’s body and stretched it against the ring post, so Naomi’s back was stretched across the ring post. Naomi got back into it with a kick to the side of the head and Naomi jumped off the top with a Blockbuster neckbreaker for two. The crowd thought that was it. They really into that as a nearfall. It looked like they almost messed it up because Flair was too close to the turnbuckle, the replay showed that there was enough room. Flair to the floor. Naomi followed, Flair got a hold of Naomi and whipped Naomi hard into the steel steps. That led to a break.

(Commercial)

There were about ten minutes left in the show as Flair grounded Naomi with a chinlock. Naomi got up, Flair wanted a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker again, but Naomi avoided it and landed on top for two. Naomi hit a springboard kick to the head for a two count. The fans were chanting for Naomi. Naomi went for a move off the ropes, Flair avoided it and Flair caught Naomi with a huge Powerbomb for a two count with Flair looking shocked about it. Flair stepped on Naomi on her way to the turnbuckle, Flair took way too long and missed the moonsault, so Flair did the second moonsault, but Naomi got the knees up. Naomi did the Rear View (Flying Ass) for a two count. The fans thought that was it. That was close! They had another exchange of moves where it looked like Naomi hit a Full Nelson Slam for a two count. That was close as well. Naomi used her legs for a headscissors to drive Flair’s head into the mat. The crowd chanted “This Is Awesome” for them. Naomi hit a split-legged moonsault off the top for one…two…and Flair kicked out again. Cole: “Are you kidding me?” Naomi was frustrated about it. Naomi tried another cover, so Flair put her foot on the bottom rope. Naomi grabbed the hair, Flair was on the apron and drove Naomi’s throat into the top rope. Naomi with punches, then Flair grabbed the hair and Naomi kicked her in the head. Naomi went for the Rear View again, Flair blocked it with a chop block counter and Flair hit the Natural Selection for the pinfall win after 20 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Charlotte Flair

Analysis: ***3/4 This was a great match. They got a lot of time. The fans were into it a lot more than I thought they would be. The key to Charlotte’s matches is that she has to sell the right way and she did here. Sometimes Charlotte doesn’t sell enough, but in this case, she definitely did her part to make Naomi look competitive. It would have been nice to see Naomi kick out of the Natural Selection neckbreaker at the end there, but I get that WWE wants to keep Charlotte strong and not have somebody kick out of her finish. I also thought Cole and Graves did an excellent job reacting to the match while putting over how close Naomi was to winning multiple times. We have seen many great matches from Charlotte. Naomi doesn’t get to have long matches like that very often, but she really impressed me here and I hope she gets more chances in the future.

Post match, Sonya Deville taunted Naomi, so Naomi punched her repeatedly. Charlotte Flair took care of Naomi with a kick. Ronda Rousey showed up for the save and she sent Flair out of the ring. Rousey tried grabbing Deville, who was selling her fake arm injury and Flair pulled Deville out of the ring. Rousey hugged Naomi in the ring while Flair and Deville were on the floor. That was the end of the show.

Analysis: It looks like a tag team match at Elimination Chamber coming between Rousey/Naomi vs. Flair/Deville, which is fine. It makes sense based on the stories going on between the women.

WWE announced the women’s tag team match after Smackdown. I think Deville will lose to Rousey.

Three Stars of the Show

  1. Charlotte Flair
  2. Naomi
  3. Los Lotharios/New Day

The Scoreboard

6.75 out of 10

Last week: 5.5

Final Thoughts

A good show overall. Not great, but better than last week’s weak effort. The main event between Charlotte and Naomi was great, so that helped the show a lot. Before that, there were moments that weren’t that interesting and it was looking like another average show. However, Charlotte and Naomi crushed it in the main event, so kudos to them. I liked the Lotharios/New Day match a lot too even if it’s the same 50/50 booking technique that WWE does too often. Other matches were just okay.

I liked the sitdown interviews with Reigns and Goldberg. It’s something different for them to make their points in a way without yelling into a microphone. They can do the face-to-face showdown on next week’s show.
