The John Report: WWE NXT 08/24/21 Review
Welcome to the WWE NXT review here on TJRWrestling. This week’s NXT followed NXT Takeover 36 from Sunday night. I thought it was a very good show overall. Here’s my review in case you haven’t read it yet. This show was taped on Monday night. I did read the spoilers going into this. It won’t affect my enjoyment of the show.

The show began with Cameron Grimes and Ted Dibiase arriving in a limousine. Grimes had the Million Dollar Title with him since he won the title at Takeover 36 on Sunday. They showed some highlights of Cameron’s win over LA Knight.
Grimes and Dibiase made their entrance. The announce team of Vic Joseph, Wade Barrett and Beth Phoenix were on hand to call the action. Barrett wasn’t happy about Grimes being the Million Dollar Champion. The crowd was behind the barricades as usual.
Million Dollar Celebration by Cameron Grimes
Dibiase said when he first showed up, people wondered what did he want to buy? Ted said he wanted somebody to carry on the legacy of the Million Dollar Man. Dibiase said wanted that person to be strong of body, strong of mind and strong of heart. Dibiase said that Grimes has never been a quitter because he kept getting up until he was the Million Dollar Champion.
Grimes said when Dibiase first showed up, Dibiase drove him nuts and Dibiase said it was on purpose because he was testing Grimes. Grimes said he was losing focus, he thought he was something and he didn’t have the accomplishment to be something. Grimes said as he was being a butler, there was no way that he was going to let LA Knight have the Million Dollar Man as his butler. Grimes said that’s why at Takeover 36 they took care of LA Knight and he became the Million Dollar Champion. The fans cheered. Grimes asked Ted where does he go now? Dibiase and Grimes spoke together saying it’s time to go “To The Moon.” That led to some bills being shot in the CWC. It was money that had had Cameron’s face on it. Vic and Beth liked the money with Cameron’s face on it while Barrett hated it.
Analysis: It was a fun celebration for a babyface character like Grimes getting the biggest win of his NXT career so far. Dibiase played a big role in the story going back several months, so it was smart to have Ted there as part of the festivities. I’m happy for Grimes since he’s one of my favorite wrestlers in NXT.
There were more NXT Takeover 36 highlights shown. The announcers plugged matches coming up on this week’s show.
Ridge Holland made his entrance first for a singles match with Pete Dunne joining him on his way to the ring.

The Hit Row foursome was shown arriving in a car together. They are in the main event later.
Timothy Thatcher (w/Tommaso Ciampa) vs. Ridge Holland (w/Pete Dunne)
They exchanged forearms. Holland got a shoulder block. Holland with uppercuts, they battled over a backslide, but Holland came back with a forearm to the face. Holland bodyslammed Thatcher so that his legs hit the ropes. Thatcher came back with punches, but Holland decked him with a punch. Holland with a running elbow. Thatcher with punches followed by a belly to belly suplex. Thatcher tried pulling on the limbs, but Holland was too strong, so Thatcher punched him. Holland came back with a head/arm overhead suplex. Holland got out of an armbar leading to a lefty clothesline. They went to picture in picture break.

The match returned as they exchanged strikes, Thatcher with a kick to the head and a body slam into the ropes like Holland did earlier. Thatcher applied a single leg crab, Holland with kicks to break free and Thatcher with a hard slap to the face. Holland blocked a jumping kick and Holland with a headbutt. Holland picked up Thatcher with a cradle powerslam like move for the pinfall win after about ten minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Ridge Holland
Analysis: **3/4 It was a competitive match with Holland using his power to get the win after that headbutt. They are pushing Holland since he’s come back from injury, so it was the obvious result to have Thatcher put him over in a clean manner. It was fun to watch because they hit eachother hard and had a physical match. Clearly, Holland is a guy on the rise in NXT.
Post match, Ciampa checked on Holland, which led to Holland grabbing Ciampa and Ciampa hit Holland with a knee. Ciampa sent Dunne out of the ring. Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch showed up to attack Ciampa, so Burch is back from injury. Holland hit Ciampa with a headbutt. Thatcher pulled Holland out of the ring, Thatcher with a forearm, then Holland smashed Thatcher in the arm with a club. Dunne got a hold of Thatcher and Holland hit Thatcher in the throat. Ciampa checked on Thatcher as the heels retreated.
Analysis: It looks like the foursome of Dunne, Holland, Lorcan and Burch is going to be a stable, so that’s good. They will need a name. I think it’s good for all of them to be in a group like this.
Carmelo Hayes was interviewed by Arash Markazi earlier in the day. Hayes talked about how this is a big opportunity because it guarantees that he has a title shot. Hayes said that people think of him as an underdog, but he doesn’t think of himself like that and said that he believes in himself. Hayes said there’s been a lot of hard work, perseverance and time put into this. Hayes faces 400 pounder Odyssey Jones later, so Hayes said there is nobody like him. Hayes said he has to be careful against a guy like that. Hayes was asked what’s next, he said we’ll find out and take it one match at a time while adding that at the end of the road you’ll see him with championship gold.
Analysis: A good interview with Hayes letting the viewer know he’s very confident in his abilities and doesn’t think of himself as an underdog.

They showed the end of last week when Indi Hartwell proposed to Dexter Lumis and Dexter said yes.
Dexter Lumis and Indi Hartwell were interviewed wearing IN-DEX shirts. Hartwell talked about how excited they are. Lumis held up a drawing he did saying that their wedding is Tuesday, September 14 on NXT. Hartwell kissed Lumis to end it.
Analysis: Wrestling weddings are ridiculous, but they usually cause a boost in viewership numbers because fans know something crazy usually happens.
Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter vs. Gigi Dolan & Jacy Jayne
The women’s tag team division hasn’t been featured much of late, so at least there’s a match now. Carter was on fire to start the match as she knocked both opponents out of the ring. Kacy tagged in with the tease of a dive leading to a dance move. Dolan hit Kacy in the back after Jayne did a distraction. Jayne tossed Dolan into Kacy with a bronco buster while Jayne hid a cannonball for two. Dolan whipped Kacy into the turnbuckle. Dolan with a clothesline on Kacy for a two count. Carter got the tag with two clotheslines, then a dropkick into a splash combo. Carter with a running kick to the face of Dolan for a two count. Dolan with a punch, Jayne was back in and hit a pump kick for two with Kacy making the save. Kacy tagged in with a 450 splash while Carter held Jayne with a neckbreaker and Kacy covered for the pinfall after four minutes.
Winners by pinfall: Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter
Analysis: *3/4 It was just a decent tag team match for the time given. I like the potential of both teams, but there’s no storyline for them or anything like that, so it’s just a random tag team match. The Kacy/Carter team gets wins once in a while although they have yet to get any kind of consistent push. Great finisher by Kacy/Carter since Kacy hit it perfectly.
Kacy and Carter went over to the announce table to say they are tired of not getting a chance at the tag team titles. They said they are going after the titles.
Raquel Gonzalez was interviewed by Mckenzie Mitchell. Raquel said if she knows Dakota Kai then she knows this isn’t over. Gonzalez said she had been waiting for Kay Lee Ray to come over to NXT. Gonzalez said it makes no difference to her who steps up. Franky Monet showed up (with Robert Stone and Jessi Kamea) saying she doesn’t wait in line, they open the velvet rope and she walks in. Monet said she’ll take her shine and championship in the process.
Analysis: I’m all for a push for Franky Monet. I don’t think she’ll beat Raquel for the title or anything like that, but I think Franky is one of the best women they have as long as she gets a chance to show it.

There was an interview with Odyssey Jones conducted by Arash Markazi from earlier in the day. Jones said that it’s an exciting time for him. Jones said that the positivity in life comes from the negatives. Jones said that five years ago he always knew he would be in WWE, but he didn’t know it would happen so fast. Jones said that coming from football lets him show a different side of him and the person he is. Jones said that he’s happy the word likes what he sees in him. Odyssey said he’s trying to get this win tonight. Odyssey praised Carmelo Hayes for having so much speed and athleticism while saying it’ll be his toughest test so far. Odyssey said he’s gotta win.
Analysis: I don’t know that much about Odyssey Jones, but he comes across as a very likable big man that has moved up quickly in WWE. As they mentioned there, he was a football player and now he’s found a home in WWE. I did some research on him and found out he signed in 2019, so he’s been training at the WWE PC for the last two years and he has been impressive as a 400 pounder that can move pretty well. He’s got a bright future because we know WWE wants to push big guys.
Kay Lee Ray got a cool-looking entrance. She’s from Scotland and had a 600+ day title reign in NXT UK, so now she’s in the NXT brand.
Kay Lee Ray v. Valentina Feroz
There were some punches from Feroz, but Ray shoved her down and hit a front suplex. Ray with a body slam followed by a knee drop. Ray whipped Feroz into the turnbuckle leading to a hard chop to the chest. Ray with a hard whip into the turnbuckle. Feroz with a dropkick, but then KLR hit a superkick. Ray hit the Gory Bomb to send Feroz into the mat for the pinfall win after three minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Kay Lee Ray
Analysis: * A dominant win from KLR in her debut. She has a very bright future in NXT for sure.
Samoa Joe was shown arriving with the NXT Championship on his shoulder. Joey the Samoan is next.

There was a backstage scene with Gigi Dolan & Jacy Jayne looking frustrated, they got asked about their loss, they said nothing and Mandy Rose showed up. Mandy said if you don’t want to feel like this again, come with her and never look back.
Analysis: There was a tease of this group in the past, so now it’s happening. I’m not sure why they barely put Mandy on the show. Maybe that’s because I like Mandy a lot and want to see more of her. Anyway, creating a group here is a good thing.
Let’s Hear from Samoa Joe
Samoa Joe made his entrance as the new NXT Champion and he’s the first-ever three-time NXT Champion as well. The fans were cheering for Joe along with the “Joe” chants for the song.
Samoa Joe said that at NXT Takeover 36 he stood in the ring across from the most dominant champion in NXT history. Joe said he beat him up and now he’s the first-ever three-time NXT Champion. Joe said that fact should make tonight a night for celebration, but Joe did not come to celebrate. Joe said he has the benefit of experience and he knows this is the land of the savages. Joe talked about how he noticed it was interesting how people were staring at him backstage. Joe asked who is willing to come up and step to him while adding that the champ is waiting.
Pete Dunne made his entrance looking serious as usual. Dunne got into the ring with Joe. Dunne said that Joe has been face to face with him enough times to know the truth. Dunne said he didn’t care how many times Joe has held the title because he’s not the baddest man there. Dunne told Joe to talk to his mate Regal and make the match.
LA Knight was next up as the former Million Dollar Champion said it was Knight time. Knight said Joe is looking at the “Million Dollar Megastar” LA Knight. Knight said he could have beat Kross in 43.5 seconds. Kross said that he’s there to be Joe’s first challenger, which means the last challenger since Knight will take that title. Knight was outside the ring, he went to the apron and Dunne threatened to break his fingers. Knight said he was just there to chat.
Kyle O’Reilly was the next man up as he came out selling the rib injury. Kyle mentioned the names of the three men noting that he won the Undisputed Finale at Takeover 36. Kyle told Knight nobody wants to see him get a title match and said that the only thing Knight could win is a Stone Cold Steve Austin knockoff vest competition. That’s good! Kyle said he respects the hell out of Joe and he’s not there to talk his way to a title match because he’s earned a title match. Ridge Holland showed up to attack Kyle with a shot to the ribs and a headbutt!
Dunne tried to go after Joe, but Joe was ready and Tommaso Ciampa went after Dunne. Holland was back in the ring with a headbutt to Ciampa to stop him. Knight went after Joe, but Joe caught him and Joe hit a headbutt. Joe was left standing tall in the ring holding up the title while Ciampa stared at him.
Analysis: I liked this. Good segment. We have seen this kind of thing in NXT before where multiple challengers step up to challenge the champion, so that just shows us there are multiple options moving forward. I think Dunne makes the most sense as a challenger at the next Takeover although they could do a multi-man match too. All of those interactions likely set up some TV matches too.
Cameron Grimes and Ted Dibiase showed up saying that they had so much fun. Dibiase said like all good things, this has to come to an end. Grimes said as much as fun he has had, this is Ted’s legacy and it belongs to Ted. Grimes gave Dibiase the title back saying it is Ted’s legacy. Dibiase told Grimes to have the championship and said to look at the championship to remember who he is. The one that Ted gave Cameron was the replica championship and Ted was driven away. Grimes: “That damn Ted Dibiase.” And there it is coming full circle.
Analysis: That was a way to retire the Million Dollar Championship from being an official title in NXT moving forward. I assumed that was coming since there are already so many titles in NXT. They need to focus on the titles they already have. It’s also a way to write out Ted Dibiase, who did a terrific job in this storyline by getting beat up by LA Knight a bit and helping Grimes become a likable face as well.

Kyle O’Reilly was shown in the hallway with Mckenzie Mitchell showing up for an interview. Duke Hudson showed up to mock in him saying it was a rough few days. Kyle didn’t like that, so they got into a fight, Duke sent him into the locker, Kyle fought back and it was broken up by officials.
Analysis: I can definitely see Hudson as a guy they use more in NXT since he’s a taller guy, so we know they want to utilize those types of wrestlers. Working with Kyle will make him better.
The NXT Breakout Tournament Finals was up next with Carmelo Hayes up first and Odyssey Jones was next. The fans liked both guys, but I think they liked the 400 pounder Jones even more. The NXT GM William Regal was watching at ringside. They got the big in-ring introductions. Hayes weighs 210 pounds while Jones weighs 405 pounds.
The winner of this tournament gets a shot at any NXT Title they want.
NXT Breakout Tournament Finals: Carmelo Hayes vs. Odyssey Jones
They shook hands, Hayes tried a headlock, but Jones shoved him away and hit an elbow to the head. Jones with a huge hiptoss that sent Hayes across the ring. Hayes with a couple of dropkicks, Jones blocked a charging attack and then Hayes hit an enziguri kick. Hayes went for a springboard attack, but Jones knocked him down.

The match continued with Hayes kicking the left leg of Jones that was against the ropes. Jones came back with forearms to the body of Hayes. Jones charged, Hayes moved and Jones hit the turnbuckle. Hayes applied a front facelock, Jones fought back and the fans were chanting for both guys. Hayes with a pump kick to the face followed by a springboard attack and a second pump kick. Jones with a jumping knee to the face. Hayes went around the upper body of Jones leading to a slam into the mat and Hayes hit a scissors kick for two. Hayes charged, but Jones caught him with an impressive spinning backbreaker. Hayes rolled out of the ring to avoid being pinned. Jones reached for Hayes, who hit him with kicks to the head and Jones charged, so Hayes moved and Jones hit his left shoulder into the ring post. Hayes went up top and hit a top rope scissors kick to the back to knock down Jones. Hayes had a small cut on the bridge of his nose. Hayes went up top again, he jumped, Jones moved and Jones hit a big splash for two. Hayes hooked the arms into a crucifix pin for the victory! It went 11 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Carmelo Hayes
Analysis: **3/4 This was a pretty good match. Hayes is such a talented in-ring performer. A lot of the match saw Hayes hitting moves, Jones did a decent job of selling the knee injury and I liked the power spots they did too. Even though Jones delivered the last move of the match with the running splash, it was Hayes countering him with a crucifix pin that got the victory. That was a nice way to end it because it doesn’t really hurt Jones that much to lose in that way while also putting over Hayes for being a smart wrestler that found a way to beat a guy that weighs almost 200 pounds more than him.
After the match, Hayes was really happy while Jones was shocked by what happened. Hayes and Jones shook hands since they’re both babyfaces.
Carmelo Hayes was on the stage with William Regal, who gave him a contract. Regal said that Carmelo gets to face any NXT Champion of his choice. Regal congratulated Hayes. Carmelo was asked about what champion he’s going to face. Hayes gave a shoutout to Odyssey Jones and he’s no joke. Hayes said that it’s too early to say what title he’s going for. Hayes said he called his shot and when he shoots, he doesn’t miss.
Analysis: I’m glad that Hayes won the tournament because he’s the most talented guy that was in it. I thought Jones might win because he’s the bigger guy and I’m sure WWE management is high on him as they should be. Hayes could be a huge star in WWE too, though. He’s only 27 with a lot of talent already, especially with what he can do in the ring. I think as Hayes develops more on the microphone, he’ll be a great all-around performer. NXT is for guys like him that need to develop some things to be complete. In a few years, he’ll be one of the best in NXT or whatever brand he’s on. I also wanted to point out that there are all these reports about NXT wanting to push the big guys, yet they had Hayes beat the 6’5” Hudson and the 400 pound Jones in the last two rounds, so maybe all of the reports aren’t true. I think NXT will probably use some of the big guys more, but it doesn’t mean guys like Hayes are going to pushed to the side.
Pete Dunne, Ridge Holland, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch were standing backstage for a promo. Dunne told Samoa Joe he knows how this ends with Dunne as the NXT Champion. Burch talked about how he was gone for five months, but now he is back. Lorcan said that he and Burch did not lose the Tag Team Titles, so they are the rightful champions. Ridge Holland told Tommaso Ciampa that he’ll end up like his pal Timothy Thatcher and they started it, so they will finish it.
Analysis: I’m glad that Lorcan/Burch are back as a team so they can feud with MSK, who need a team to feud with. Dunne is the leader of the group. Holland is the muscle/rising star in the group. I like these guys together. They just need a name.
Boa is in action up next.

It was announced that the new NXT UK Champion Ilja Dragunov will be on NXT next week. What a great match with WALTER on Sunday. It’s my WWE Match of the Year so far. Four months left in the year as we head to September next week.
They said Timothy Thatcher was out indefinitely.
Boa (w/Mei Ying) vs. Xyon Quinn
Boa worked over Quinn with strikes and repeated knees to the ribs. Boa delivered an open hand palm strike to the throat. Boa worked over Quinn with kicks. Boa looked at Mei Ying, who stood up with some creepy nails. Boa turned around and Quinn hit him with a running forearm for the pinfall win in just over one minute.
Winner by pinfall: Xyon Quinn
Analysis: 1/4* That was unexpected. I don’t know much about Xyon Quinn, but he does have a good look. I just figured Boa would win this match in an easy manner. I’m not sure where it’s headed. Boa is not doing much.
Quinn celebrated the win. He was going to go up the ring, but Mei Ying was there, so Quinn left in another part of the arena. Ying just stared at the loser Boa in the ring.
Johnny Gargano of The Way was in William Regal’s office. Gargano wanted Regal to cancel the Lumis/Hartwell wedding. Regal said that this relationship developed on NXT, so it makes for great TV. Regal wanted to see Gargano go “bananas” and they argued about how to pronounce bananas. LA Knight showed up in the office complaining about Samoa Joe and Regal told both of them to get out, so Regal shut the door.
Analysis: It was weird having a Takeover without a Gargano match. Hopefully he’s back in the mix, so he doesn’t miss another Takeover.
The six-man tag team main event is next.

There was a video with Malcolm Bivens talking about how Roderick Strong and Hachiman were training two young athletes. Bivens said next week Strong will issue an open challenge.
Next Tuesday on NXT:

* Kyle O’Reilly vs. Duke Hudson
The bottom two matches were announced with graphics during the main event.
The Hit Row foursome of NXT North American Champion Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, Top Dolla, Ashante Thee Adonis and B-Fab made their entrance. The fans like them a lot even though they only recently turned babyface due to this rivalry. Their opponents were the Legado del Fantasma trio that has been a united group for a long time in NXT.
Hit Row – Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, Top Dolla & Ashante Thee Adonis (w/B-Fab) vs. Legado Del Fantasma – Santos Escobar, Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde
The Legado guys attacked as soon as they got into the ring and they cleared the ring of Hit Row. Dolla was being held by two guys, then B-Fab tripped Escobar and Scott/Adonis pulled two guys out of the ring. The bell rang with Dolla facing off against Escobar. Wilde tagged in, so Dolla tossed him across the ring. Adonis rocked Wilde with forearms to the back. Wilde with a knee lift to the ribs, but Adonis came back with a monkey flip across the ring. Mendoza into the ring, so Adonis did a monkey flip to him across the ring. Adonis with a dropkick to knock Wilde off the apron to the floor. Adonis with a flapjack on Wilde on the floor in front of the other Legado guys. They went to a picture in picture break.

The heels were in control as usual after a break. Mendoza with a clothesline on Scott, then Wilde with a clothesline, then Escobar with a clothesline and they kept on doing repeated clotheslines on Scott. It was about ten clotheslines or something like that. That’s something Legado likes to do in tag team matches. Escobar hit a running knee attack. Escobar with a delayed vertical suplex on Swerve. Wilde with a springboard splash off the top rope. Wilde with a neckbreaker. Scott came back with a kick on Wilde and Mendoza tagged in. Scott broke free with a boot to the chest and Dolla tagged in against Escobar. Dolla with a running shoulder tackle, a kick to the gut and a running knee lift. Dolla with a corner splash followed by a sidewalk slam followed by a shake into an elbow drop for two as the other Legado guys broke up the pin. Dolla picked up Mendoza/Wilde on him, then he caught Escobar, so Dolla slammed all three guys down at the same time. That was impressive. Dolla sent Escobar into the turnbuckle, Adonis tagged going for a neckbreaker, but Escobar shoved Dolla into Adonis. Escobar with an enziguri on Dolla. Adonis was legal, so Legado hit a double spinebuster and double dropkick for a two count. Adonis tossed Wilde out of the ring. Mendoza with a missile dropkick and a suplex into a neckbreaker for two, but Scott made the save with a dropkick. Scott got the tag against Escobar as they exchanged punches, Scott with a kick to the get and a jumping flatliner. Scott went up top, he was distracted by Mendoza and Wilde, so Top Dolla took them out with a running attack on the floor. Scott jumped off the top with a 450 splash for one…two…and no! Just a two count. Scott went for a slam, Escobar broke free and Scott hit a hiptoss over the top to the floor. Escobar tripped up Scott on the floor. B-Fab shoved Escobar into the ring post. That led to a woman going down to ringside (it was Elektra Lopez) and Lopez hit B-Fab in the ribs with a club. Escobar was happy to see her. Lopez tossed Scott the club, Scott didn’t want it, the referee took it and Escobar got the ROLLUP OF DEATH~! on Scott for the pinfall win after 14 minutes.
Winners by pinfall: Legado Del Fantasma – Santos Escobar, Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde
Analysis: ***1/2 This was a very good tag team match. That’s no surprise when Legado are in a match and the face team has Swerve, who is one of my favorites in NXT. I like how Adonis had some good moments of offense and Top Dolla has really improved a lot as a big man that can move well. They set up the spots for Top Dolla very well and you know when Legado is in the match, those guys are going to bust their ass to make everybody else look good too. Everything worked well leading up to the finish with Lopez taking out B-Fab, which caused Swerve to get distracted and Escobar to get the pin. I don’t love the ROLLUP OF DEATH~! ending, but NXT does that finish rarely compared to how many times we see it on Raw or Smackdown, which is far too often. It wasn’t necessarily a cheap win by the heels, but it also wasn’t clean, so it keeps the feud going.
The Legado guys were joined by Lopez on the stage, so that likely means she has joined the group. Hit Row with B-Fab were in the ring, so it should lead to more matches between the teams.
Analysis: Since Escobar pinned Scott it would make sense for Escobar to get a shot at the NXT North American Title soon. They will also probably do Lopez vs. B-Fab in a match although I haven’t seen B-Fab wrestler. The Wilde/Mendoza team facing Dolla/Adonis can also happen again soon, so they have a lot of options to keep these rivalries going.

Final Thoughts
The show was okay, but overall not that interesting. The match quality was below average compared to what we usually get from NXT. Maybe that’s going to be the new norm moving forward? I don’t know. There were definitely some different people featured while plenty of familiar faces were still around. The heel group of Dunne, Holland, Lorcan and Burch will probably get pushed a lot, so that’s cool to see.
I liked the choice of Carmelo Hayes as the NXT Breakout Tournament winner because he’s such a talented wrestler. The main event was the best match with Legado beating Hit Row due to Elektra Lopez joining the group as a surprise. I also enjoyed the Cameron Grimes and Samoa Joe promos. It’s nice to see faces happy.
I think if you’re a casual WWE fan, NXT really isn’t a much watch, but if you like watching wrestlers develop then it’s fun to watch. I still enjoy it a lot.
