Report: WWE Plans to Introduce Cruiserweight Tag Team Titles

TJR Wrestling

WWE will be debuting Cruiserweight Tag Team Titles for 205 Live in the coming months, per Mike Johnson at PWInsider.

According to the report, multiple sources have confirmed plans are already in place for the WWE Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship to accompany the tag team titles of the other WWE brands. Designs for the championship belts were recently finalized and while no timetable has been announced, expect them sometime following WrestleMania 34 once the WWE Cruiserweight Championship Tournament concludes.

The report also notes that the addition of these titles is a continued sign of WWE’s intent to buildup the 205 Live brand following Triple H taking control of the show behind-the-scenes earlier this year.

The last time a Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship was seen on television was on the final edition of WCW Monday Nitro on 3/26/2001 when Rey Mysterio Jr. and Billy Kidman defeated Elix Skipper and Kid Romeo for the titles, making the Filthy Animals the 2nd and final champions.

The WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Titles were in existence for 8 days.

Tommy’s Thoughts: At least WWE will be able to lay claim to having the best Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship division from any company in history if they can make these belts last 2 weeks.

All kidding aside, I’ve thoroughly been enjoying 205 Live since the Triple H reboot. It had its moments in the pre-Drake Maverick era, but the renewed focus on letting the action tell the story instead of relying on hokey promo segments and Enzoantics that didn’t always land is a welcome change.

At this rate, 205 Live could even eventually challenge NXT for the stand-out WWE Network brand to catch every week, if they can keep the momentum from the tournament up when it comes to telling other the story of other rivalries on the brand.

With the wealth of talent incoming (Roderick Strong and Mark Andrews are welcome to stick around: I would say Tyler Bate as well, but would rather see him stick with Trent Seven as Moustache Mountain) and onboard, plus unexplored threads from the pre-boot 205 Live (an extended Drew Gulak vs. Tony Nese rivalry? Cedric Alexander vs. Mustafa Ali?), the outlook for 205 Live is definitely looking up. It certainly has me excited: I’m already fantasy booking The Lucha Trio playing Freebirds with the Cruiserweight Tag Titles in my head.

Let’s just hope these belts aren’t as ugly as the purple one.
