Report: Potential Main Event WrestleMania 33 Matches

TJR Wrestling

When looking ahead to WrestleMania 33 on April 2, one man that naturally gets brought up in discussion is The Undertaker. Who will he face and will it be his last match?

When Undertaker made his latest return this year, it was on the last episode of Smackdown Live before Survivor Series. When addressing Team Smackdown, Undertaker mentioned that WrestleMania will no longer define him. This could potentially mean a Royal Rumble win to earn an opportunity for the World or Universal Title.

The two main title matches that have been announced for the upcoming Royal Rumble pay-per-view are AJ Styles vs. John Cena for the WWE World Title and Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Title. Undertaker’s top two potential WrestleMania opponents are currently John Cena and Roman Reigns. This is according to the latest edition of Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

This means we could see Undertaker compete against either one of these men at WrestleMania 33 for one of the two major titles. The WWE World or Universal Title does not need to be on the line, but it’s reportedly enticing to WWE to have one of the two major title’s on the line as it instantly moves Undertaker’s match to the main event and elevates the title.

Although John Cena would seem to be a lock as Undertaker’s WrestleMania 33 opponent, Meltzer notes that Vince McMahon is not yet positive about having them compete against each other. Reigns is being considered as Undertaker’s opponent too because he is looked at as being the future of the company, whereas a Undertaker vs. Cena match is not building the future.

Meltzer states that the two favorites to win the Royal Rumble match are currently Undertaker and Braun Strowman.

In regards to WrestleMania 33 matches that are locked in, Meltzer states that Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg, Triple H vs. Seth Rollins and Big Show vs. Shaquille O’Neal are all definite. He also mentioned that a multi-woman match for the Raw Women’s Title is probable, but not set in stone.

Mark’s reaction: Wow. Okay, I feel like a could write a column or multiple columns on the above information, but I’ll try and keep this brief. Cena vs. Undertaker at WrestleMania 33 is a match I’d love to see, but I do not want the WWE World Title to be on the line. That is a match that does not need the championship to be up for grabs, especially since the roster is filled with talent that would benefit much more from that opportunity.

Also, I’m not sure I buy the whole “Cena vs. Undertaker wouldn’t be building the future, therefore we’re hesitant about it” opinion. Was Triple H vs. Undertaker or Undertaker vs. Shane McMahon building the future? Nope, but they happened because they were dream matches.

I also don’t think Undertaker will face Reigns at WrestleMania because he made it pretty clear during his return last month that he’s a Smackdown guy. WWE doesn’t necessarily need to stick to the brand-split rules when it comes to Undertaker, but I feel like Undertaker will be on WWE television more frequently in the early part of 2017. Therefore, it would make sense if he stuck with one brand.

Anyway, here’s to hoping that Styles vs. Nakamura or Samoa Joe for the World Title and Owens vs. Balor for the Universal Title may still happen at WrestleMania this April. Fingers crossed.
