Young Bucks AEW Storyline Hit By Several Creative Changes

Young Bucks AEW Tag Team Champions

The Young Bucks don’t always get their own way in AEW.

On the October 30th edition of Dynamite, the Young Bucks lost the AEW World Tag Team Championship to Private Party and promptly walked out of the company.

The defeat to Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen brought to an end a run that had been greeted with frustration by fans who called out The Bucks and the company online. The Jackson brothers won the gold at Dynasty in April but didn’t defend it until mid-August, and by the time they lost to Private Party, they’d only defended the prize five times.

However, according to Matt and Nick, that wasn’t how they wanted things to play out.

Young Bucks Wanted To Lose AEW Tag Team Championship Earlier

During an appearance on the Tunnel Talk podcast, the brothers looked back on their time in AEW, and what comes next. While reflecting on their most recent run with tag team gold, Nick revealed the pair wanted to drop the titles months before they actually did, but creative plans kept changing.

“This last run we just had, we were supposed to drop those titles months and months before we actually dropped them, but creative changed I would say 4-5 different times in the last like six months,” Nick said. “At one point, we were going to lose the belts to a certain team. And then a month later it changed to another team.

And then, I remember Private Party came up to us actually and they mentioned about wanting to do like a long-term program with us. And we were like, ‘Well, sorry man, Tony [Khan] just gave us the layout of what we’re doing and that’s not in the cards.’

Despite Private Party not being scheduled to win the championship, that changed after an eye-catching encounter between the two teams at WrestleDream. Nick explained that despite the constant changes, he and Matt were happy to shine a spotlight on Kassidy and Quen.

“And something changed and we ended up wrestling them in a match [at WrestleDream]… but we tore the house down.

As soon as we got backstage, we knew, ‘Oh alright.’ It’s in Tony’s eyes. He was like, ‘I think we have something, I think we have something.’ And Matt and I thought the same exact thing. We were like, ‘We’ve got to pivot. We’ve got to change our plans again.’

And that was like the fourth time changing plans for those titles to be dropped. We were happy though because we wanted to put those guys over. They deserved the spotlight. It’s been five years now, so they were ready for a big push. And I’m just glad Matt and I got to give them that last shove before we left.”

The Young Bucks haven’t been seen on AEW television since losing to Private Party in late October. While they haven’t wrestled anywhere since taking a break from the company, they did recently come to the aid of Jack Perry at NJPW Strong Style Evolved.

Back in October, it was announced that the Young Bucks would compete at Wrestle Dynasty inside the Tokyo Dome, marking their first match in Japan since leaving NJPW in 2019. At the event, the Jackson brothers will challenge for the vacant IWGP Tag Team Championship.
