WWE Bosses Warned Mercedes Mone Against Leaving The Company

Mercedes Mone remains proud of her decision to leave WWE.

The May 16th, 2022 episode of Monday Night Raw was thrown into chaos after Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out during the taping. The exact details of what happened remain unknown, but there was reportedly a row over creative, and the pair launched their Women’s Tag Team Titles at then-Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis.

Although Naomi later returned to the company at the 2024 Royal Rumble, Banks renamed herself Mercedes Mone and set about taking the wrestling world by storm. This saw her wrestle in NJPW and Stardom before signing with AEW.

Mercedes Mone Stands By Decision To Walk Away

Writing in the latest issue of her Mone Mag, the AEW star looked back on her decision to leave WWE and how her life has changed since. In one section, Mone revealed that a WWE higher up warned her that “the grass isn’t always greener” outside of the company, but that only strengthened her resolve to test herself elsewhere.

Growing up, WWE was everything to me. I never imagined my life without it. But over time, I’ve come to realize that it’s not WWE I can’t live without; it’s pro wrestling itself. I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the person who sparked this journey for me. Because of that pivotal moment, my life changed for the absolute better.

Not a day goes by that I don’t feel grateful for that decision. It pushed me to new heights, matured me into a strong-willed CEO, and empowered me to take control of my life and future. I’m especially thankful for all my fans who have stood by me throughout this journey.

I want to remind you all: when something doesn’t feel right and you start receiving signs from the universe, listen. I’ve been working on sharing my story, and trust me, when the time comes, it’s going to be one for the books.

I remember a higher-up once telling me, “The grass isn’t greener on the other side.” Well, let me tell you—every seed I’ve planted over the years is growing and flourishing like never before. Becoming the highest-paid women’s wrestler is a beautiful flower that has blossomed, and I couldn’t be prouder.

Keep chasing your dreams because no one will stop mine.

Mercedes Mone is set to challenge “Timeless” Toni Storm for the AEW Women’s World Championship at All In Texas on July 12. Mone earned her shot at the gold after winning the women’s Owen Hart Cup, defeating Jamie Hayter in the finals at Double or Nothing.

The match marks not only the first time that Mone has challenged for AEW’s top prize, but also the first time that she and Storm have met in a singles match.

During an interview back in August, Mercedes Mone admitted that she wanted to return to WWE in 2023.
