WWE US Title Open Challenge Delivers Hard-Hitting Action on SmackDown
With three title matches announced for tonight on WWE SmackDown, it was a huge night of action planned by the promotion for tonight as the Road to Royal Rumble is now officially underway.
The first title match of the night saw Giulia successfully defend her WWE Women’s United States Championship against Alexa Bliss, following some outside interference.
Her counterpart, the Men’s United States Champion, Carmelo Hayes, looked to do the same as he continued the tradition of hosting US title open challenges, which was initially brought back by Sami Zayn during his run.
Shinsuke Nakamura answered the open challenge on WWE SmackDown
Three-time United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura stepped up to answer Melo’s open challenge as he looked to win the belt a fourth time. Nakamura showed his experience against the champion and took control of the match.
The King of Strong Style damaged Carmelo’s left knee with a huge kick and proceeded to target the leg with multiple dragon screws and a Single Leg-Boston Crab.
Both wrestlers gave it their all in the match and didn’t have much left in the tank by the time the match came to an end. Carmelo Hayes ultimately retained his title by intercepting a Kinsasha attempt with a first-48 and following it up with Nothing But Net for the win.
