WWE SummerSlam Night 1 Main Event Reportedly Revealed
It seems WWE has made its decision over which match will get the nod to headline night one of the first-ever two-night SummerSlam.
For the first time ever, SummerSlam will take place across two nights on August 2nd and 3rd in MetLife Stadium. Cody Rhodes will challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship in the presumed main event of night two after Rhodes won the King of the Ring tournament.
There are other huge matches set for the show, including Jade Cargill challenging Tiffany Stratton for the WWE Women’s Title, Naomi defending the Women’s World Title against IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley, and Jelly Roll teaming with Randy Orton to clash with Logan Paul and Drew McIntyre.
But WWE knows which match will be its night one headliner.
CM Punk To Main Event WWE SummerSlam
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted he had heard from WWE that CM Punk challenging Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship was the current plan to main event night one of SummerSlam. Meltzer also deliberated on where the company would position Roman Reigns on the show:
Do you go with Roman Reigns and Bron Breakker on night one, because that’s the night that probably, based on WrestleMania, needs the boost?
Or do you put it on night two because that’s the night that’s probably gonna have the most viewers? So it’s an interesting discussion point for them internally, like which night do you put the Roman Reigns [match]? Because I think the Roman Reigns match is very clearly the number three match on that show, as far as intrigue and interest and everything.
Should WWE end up going with Punk and Gunther for the night one main event, it will be the third SummerSlam main event of Punk’s career and the first time since he’s headlined the event since 2011.
