WWE Storyline Update: Charlotte Flair “Re-Injures” Becky Lynch at Smackdown Live Event on Sat. Night (Video)

The story of Becky Lynch being suspended while dealing with a knee injury has continued this weekend, even at a WWE Smackdown Live event in Alexandria, Louisiana.

During a match with Charlotte Flair challenging Asuka for the Smackdown Women’s Title, Lynch showed up by entering through the crowd and went into the ring. When Lynch got in the ring, Flair kicked her in the knee. Flair continued the attack by stretching Lynch’s left leg against the ropes. The attack from Flair continued with multiple chair shots to the left leg as referees, producers and the WWE medical staff went into the ring to check on Lynch, who was selling a lot of pain.

Here’s how WWE explained it on their website:

During a SmackDown live event in Alexandria, La., Saturday night, Becky Lynch suddenly leaped over the barricade from the crowd and attacked Charlotte Flair as The Queen was facing SmackDown Women’s Champion Asuka. In the heated altercation that followed, an irate Charlotte re-injured Becky’s knee, going as far to attack it with a steel chair.

The exchange came on the heels of WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon’s ruling on Raw that Becky receive a 60-day suspension from in-ring action and that Charlotte replace her in the Raw Women’s Championship Match at WrestleMania 35 against Ronda Rousey. Then, 24 hours later on SmackDown LIVE, Flair further stirred the pot by informing the WWE Universe that she was dedicating her title match at The Showcase of the Immortals to Lynch.

Check back with WWE.com for more on Becky Lynch’s injury as it becomes available.

The whole thing is part of the storyline to continue to build sympathy for Lynch. WWE is claiming that Lynch “re-injured” her left knee, so the idea is she’s hurt more now because of the attack. All of this will eventually lead to a triple threat match at WrestleMania for the Raw Women’s Title with Ronda Rousey defending against both Charlotte Flair and Royal Rumble winner Becky Lynch.

Charlotte Flair will be at ringside watching Rousey vs. Ruby Riott at Elimination Chamber on Sunday night. Lynch is not advertised to be there due to the suspension storyline.

Earlier on Saturday, Lynch commented on a report of a long lineup of people that are waiting to meet her on Sunday at Cricket Wireless store in Houston for a signing. People are lined up already and plan on spending the night outside the store, which is insane and also shows how popular Lynch is.

TJR Thoughts: The injury angle is WWE’s way of getting more sympathy for Lynch. She’s fine, but some people are going to freak out about it. Injury angles and suspension storylines are easy ways to get fans to care about somebody more. It wouldn’t shock me if she shows up at Elimination Chamber on Sunday or Raw on Monday and gets arrested while suspended because that’s another thing WWE always does with top faces. At some point between now and WrestleMania, she’ll probably slap on the Dis-Arm-Her armbar submission at Vince McMahon, but there’s no reason to rush it.

Anyway, if they can fool some people into thinking Lynch is really hurt then that’s a success in WWE’s eyes.
