One WWE star knows they’re staying in NXT.

Since re-joining WWE in early 2024, Shawn Spears has reveled in his role as a veteran, working to help guide the young talent around him both on and off-screen.

In recent weeks, this has made its way onto NXT as he’s become a mentor for Brooks Jensen while also recruiting Izzi Dame. On the March 4 episode of NXT, this saw Shawn Spears cause a huge upset as he beat Tony D’Angelo to claim the North American Title.

During the match, Spears used his experience to his advantage to capitalise on D’Angelo’s storyline back injury.

Shawn Spears Accepting Understands WWE Role

During a new interview with Gabby AF, Spears discussed his current role and said he’s planning to keep wrestling as long as he possibly can. However, when the time does come for him to hang up his boots, he wants to remain actively involved as a trainer.

“Right now, I feel good. I’m still moving, and I feel like I can still keep up with the younger kids. I can still hang, but as long as it doesn’t disrupt any plans I have in the future with my kids, I’ll do it as long as I can.

The beautiful thing is that even when I step back from on-screen performing as a professional wrestler, I’m still going to have the school, I’m still going to teach, and I’m still going to be actively in there because I believe the best way to learn is by hands-on teaching.

That’s the way I was taught by Eric Young, and that’s the way I teach my kids now at the Performance Center and (his Flatbacks Wrestling school). So I’ll always be a hands-on coach, and the day that I can’t be, then it’s probably time to pack it in.”

Spears went on to describe his NXT run as his “last stop,” adding that he knows a main roster call-up is highly unlikely, but he’s fine with that.

The star has previously claimed he wants to retire with WWE.
