WWE Star Training For Different Role
A veteran WWE on-camera performer may transition into a different role for the company in the future.
When you work for WWE, there are a lot of opportunities available for talent because there are so many different things that the company does that don’t just involve wrestling in a ring.
Cathy Kelley initially worked for WWE from 2016 to 2020, starting on the NXT brand before moving on to do other things. In October 2022, WWE brought Kelley back to the company and she has worked as a backstage interview on both Raw and SmackDown ever since.
Earlier this week, PWInsider Elite reported that Kelley has been training in the WWE ring and has also been taking promo classes “for some time.” It was mentioned that Kelley would be in some sort of “manager-esque” role.
It has also been confirmed by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter‘s Dave Meltzer that Kelley “has been training recently there, and right now, the working idea is to be a manager.”
WWE Offered Other Roles To Cathy Kelley
While WWE fans have grown accustomed to seeing Cathy Kelley as a backstage interviewer, she revealed in a December 2022 interview that the company wanted her to return and was open to assigning her to different roles if that’s what she desired.
I always stayed in touch with Stephanie and Hunter, they knew all the projects I was working on, and they made it very clear that the door was always open. Then, it just kind of happened. I just sent him [Triple H] a birthday text, and that’s kind of what snowballed everything for me coming back.
It turned from a text into a Zoom call with Stephanie and the conversation kept on going, it was the right time and right opportunity. Working for them was very appealing. They’re both the epitome of what great leadership looks like. To get to work for them is great. Hunter just cultivates such a fun environment where it’s really enjoyable to be backstage and do your job.
That was the offer. When I talked to Stephanie, she knew some of the other ventures I was working on, and she said, ‘Do you want to come back as a writer? Do you want to come back as a liaison to WWE community and do a lot of events?’ She also offered me training to do commentary, which I love that she believes in me for that.
One of my goals was to always be on either Raw or SmackDown as a backstage interviewer. When that offer came through, that was something I was really excited about.
There is no word on whether Kelley would manage a wrestler or a group on the main roster, NXT, or possibly hold a General Manager role. However, being a manager is different than being a backstage interviewer, so that’s why Kelley is training for it.
