Why Popular WWE Star Insisted On Wrestling With Broken Ankle

A broken ankle wasn’t going to stop one WWE star.

Professional wrestlers and injuries go hand in hand, with the history of the industry littered with heroic tales of stars big and small refusing to quit. And while a more modern approach to health and fitness has led to more performers being saved from themselves, medical advice is still occasionally treated as optional.

On the latest episode of What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, Natalya recalled breaking her ankle during a rehearsal before a match with Naomi. But despite the injury, she was determined to wrestle, especially as she was booked to win.

Even if that meant walking to the ring with all the urgency and energy of The Undertaker.

“I wrestled Naomi in London with a completely broken ankle because I was booked on the show. And I’m a person of my word… Yeah, I broke my ankle during rehearsal. I did a baseball slide through Naomi’s leg.

I broke my ankle during the day and they told me, everybody was like, you know, “We can pull you from the match.” This is me being selfish. I was booked to win. And I was like, “I’m not giving up my win.

I wrestled that night. It was a three minute match. I walked out like Undertaker. I walked out so slow, you would’ve thought I was Undertaker’s daughter for how slow I was walking.”

Natalya Wants WWE Legend To Win Top Award

Later in the conversation, Natalya and Cody Rhodes both took time to praise The Rock for his performance as Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine.

Despite the film’s title, it represented a major departure from the veteran’s typical movie roles as he dived into the emotional turmoil that engulfed former MMA star Kerr during a particularly tumultuous time in his life.

Natalya said she was blown away by The Rock’s vulnerable and powerful performance, suggesting he deserves to win an Oscar. Despite praise for the WWE legend’s work, the film generated just $11.3 million domestically and $20.2 million worldwide against a budget of a reported $50 million.
