Top WWE Star Breaks Character To Praise John Cena
John Cena will leave a massive hole in WWE.
On December 13, John Cena will wrestle the last match of a career that made him one of the biggest stars pro wrestling has ever seen.
Since signing with WWE as a developmental talent in 2000, Cena has become one of the most successful Superstars in history, notching up 17 World Championship wins along the way. But at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., that will all come to an end.
John Cena Meant “Everything”
During an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up, Drew McIntyre dropped his current heelish persona to pay tribute to Cena and highlight his importance to the wrestling industry.
“He’s meant everything to our industry. When The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin left WWE, the top superstars like Triple H and Shawn Michaels were at the end of their careers; the company and the world needed someone to step into that top spot. John stepped up for multiple generations.”
McIntyre added that he was frustrated to miss out on wrestling Cena in a singles match during his retirement run, but he was just glad to be present during this period.
“It’s notable to say that he’s about to have his last couple of matches. I’m sad I didn’t get one of them, but I’m glad I’m part of the roster. I’m glad I got to travel the world. I’m glad I got to learn from John Cena because he is a performer, and he may just be the best of all time.”
Although Gunther has been widely tipped to be the man who’ll retire John Cena, CM Punk recently claimed that he’d have been the perfect man for the job. The pair had a lengthy rivalry during Punk’s first WWE run, and many believe their match in 2025 was hampered by Cena’s heel turn.
Despite this, Punk said that Gunther is in the perfect position to do the honors.
