Top WWE Star Promises To Ruin John Cena’s Retirement
John Cena will retire from in-ring competition after Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII on December 13, 2025.
His retirement bout will headline Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII. His opponent will be Gunther.
Ahead of the match on Saturday, Gunther had an interview with ESPN’s First Take, where he promised to ruin Cena’s retirement.
It’s a very special opportunity because I think there’s going to be a lot of eyes on it. The whole wrestling world for sure.
I think, in general, people are going to pay a lot of attention to that, and I think everybody is coming, bringing all his love and support for John Cena that night.
And I’m in an incredible special situation that I can ruin it all. I can ruin that party and break a few hearts, and I think that’s what I’m going to do. (From 0:53)
Gunther reiterated this statement in another interview with ESPN on The Rich Eisen Show.
Let’s compare it to a book. The last chapter will be written on Saturday. It’s just a question.
Is it going to be a happy ending or is it going to be a heartbreak? And I’m going to do everything in my power that it’s going to be a heartbreak. (From 0:43)
Fans Unhappy With John Cena’s Final WWE Opponent
Gunther earned the right to face John Cena in his retirement match by winning the Last Time is Now Tournament, defeating LA Knight in the finals on SmackDown.
Many fans expressed a strong dislike for this booking choice despite Gunther’s credentials as a former World Heavyweight Champion and record Intercontinental title holder.
Fans felt the matchup was too obvious, as Gunther’s progress was clear, and it spoiled the suspense of Cena’s farewell.
Furthermore, the WWE Universe wanted Cena to be retired by someone with a history with him.
