R-Truth is leaving WWE.

On June 1, R-Truth announced he had been released by WWE. It was later clarified that the star will be leaving the company when his contract expires.

Truth signed with WWE in 1999 and wrestled under the name K-Kwik alongside Road Dogg until being released in 2001. The star then signed with TNA and became the first, and currently only, Black NWA World Champion in history.

R-Truth re-joined the sports entertainment giant in 2008 and has since become one of the most beloved stars on the roster.

WWE Stars Shocked By R-Truth News

As soon as news of Truth’s departure spread like wildfire across social media, shock and surprise became the general theme of the day. Many fans commented that they expected Truth to be a “lifer” given his lengthy tenure with the company and incredible popularity with fans.

According to Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, that sentiment has been echoed backstage, with “shock and disbelief” taking hold.

Truth’s former tag team partner and current SmackDown Head Writer Brian James (Road Dogg) said he was “heartbroken” by the news, but conceded his departure is the “nature of the beast.”

The star’s final match for the company came on the May 30 edition of SmackDown, where he was defeated in under three minutes by JC Mateo.
