WWE Referee Stops Gunther vs. Randy Orton In Berlin
Gunther might call himself the living legend but he will have a few more believing in that following a huge win to keep his World Heavyweight Title.
Gunther captured the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam when he put Damian Priest to sleep but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Priest might have had the match won but Finn Balor screwed his Judgment Day partner by placing The Ring General’s foot on the rope to keep the match going.
Gunther was introduced for the first time as World Heavyweight Champion by his Imperium partner Ludwig Kaiser on Raw in Baltimore but there was a surprise waiting for the new champion and it came outta nowhere.
As Gunther told the crowd nothing could catch him by surprise, Randy Orton’s music hit as the fourteen-time WWE World Champion made his way to the ring.
Orton reminded Gunther that when they clashed in the final of the King of the Ring tournament his shoulder was not on the mat for the three-count. With that in mind, Randy Orton wanted another shot at Gunther and challenged him to a World Heavyweight Championship match at Bash in Berlin on the 31st of August.
Gunther Slays The Viper In Berlin
The fans in Berlin sang Randy Orton’s song to him but that was nothing compared to the reception for the man from just across the border in neighbouring Austria as Gunther received a hero’s welcome that only grew louder when Ludwig Kaiser appeared to give The Ring General his patented ring introduction.
A methodical match followed that was soundtracked by the German crowd singing their collective heart out. Gunther survived an RKO outta nowhere to keep the match going but Orton looked to have total control after he dropped the champion through the announce table.
Ultimately it was the same sleeper hold that won Gunther the title at SummerSlam that proved decisive as the referee had no choice but to end the bout.
Elsewhere on the show, there were new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions crowned while Cody Rhodes escaped with his WWE Title as Kevin Owens lost his killer instinct.
