WWE News: July 9 Raw PPV Titled “WWE Great Balls of Fire”; Lesnar Will Defend Universal Title
It was announced on Friday that WWE’s July 9 pay-per-view event will be named “Great Balls of Fire.” It will take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
My initial reaction to that was: “Are you kidding? Is it still April Fool’s?” Trust me we are well past April Fool’s Day and that name is official.
The original name for the July PPV was Bad Blood and it was going to take place in Hartford, which we reported last month, but WWE has changed those plans. No idea yet as to why the plans changed, but it sucks for the fans in Hartford.
It was also announced that Brock Lesnar will make his first Universal Title defense at Great Balls of Fire. He won the Universal Title on April 2 at WrestleMania, appeared on Raw the next night and hasn’t appeared again. That means he will go over three months before defending the title for the first time.
Tickets are on sale next week at Ticketmaster using this link.
TJR Thoughts: I think the name is awful. Whoever thought it was a good idea was way off. Why not just stick with Bad Blood or even better use Great American Bash? Great Balls of Fire is a terrible name for a wrestling show.
Here’s a commercial for the show featuring Brock Lesnar.

Big E, who is now on Smackdown Live, is sad that he’s not on the show.
Clearly, the most disappointing aspect of no longer being on Raw is knowing I won't be a part of the 1st annual Great Balls of Fire.

Poor guy. Good luck to the Raw talent that will be cutting serious promos about how they want to fight somebody at a show called Great Balls of Fire. What a bizarre name.
If you want to know where they got the name from, here’s the famous Jerry Lee Lewis song that originally was released in 1957. I assume Vince McMahon is fond of it and that’s why they went with it. Somebody should have talked him out of it.
