WWE Never Wanted Lengthy Jey Uso World Title Reign

Jey Uso

Jey Uso’s current run was always the plan.

On June 9, Gunther defeated Jey Uso to claim the World Heavyweight Championship for the second time. The victory also served as an act of revenge for the Austrian star who lost the title to Uso at WrestleMania.

In the weeks since his victory, it’s been announced that Gunther will defend the title against Goldberg in the WCW legend’s retirement match.

Following the match, it was reported that Triple H wanted Goldberg’s match against Gunther to be for the World Championship. This meant that Uso was effectively moved aside.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Uso was set for a lengthy title reign.

WWE Wanted Short Jey Uso Title Reign

According to a new report in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer confirmed that Uso was only meant to hold the World Heavyweight Championship for a short period. When he won the title at WrestleMania, there was an understanding that he’d quickly lose it back to Gunther.

Regardless, that hasn’t stopped complaints about Uso’s booking.

On a recent episode of his podcast, Rikishi again called out the booking of Jey Uso, branding his current storyline “backwards.” The veteran had previously called for WWE’s creative team to be fired for their booking of his son’s World Heavyweight Title reign.

Uso is set to face Cody Rhodes on the June 23 edition of Raw in the semi-finals of the King of the Ring tournament. The winner will go on to meet Sami Zayn or Randy Orton in the finals at Night of Champions.
