Report Confirms WWE Made Major Creative Change For Goldberg’s Return
Goldberg is back.
On June 11, it was reported that Goldberg would be returning to WWE television on the June 16 edition of Monday Night Raw. The WWE Hall of Famer has been linked with a retirement match for several months, and it seems plans are now underway.
Furthermore, it’s believed the veteran will step up to face new World Heavyweight Champion Gunther.
Gunther won the title back on June 9 with a win over Jey Uso. The Austrian star initially lost the championship to Uso at WrestleMania 41.
Goldberg To Challenge For The World Heavyweight Championship
According to a new report in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter from Dave Meltzer, Goldberg’s return factored into the decision to have Jey Uso lose the World Championship. As noted by Meltzer, Triple H made the call for Gunther vs. Goldberg to be for the World Heavyweight Championship, meaning Uso had to lose the gold.
The bout is expected to take place at the upcoming edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12.
“GUNTHER vs. Goldberg was always going to be the retirement match and it was always going against All in Texas and on NBC, with the idea of maximizing that day with the big match not on Netflix but on free network TV. Goldberg is currently scheduled to return on the 6/16 Raw in Green Bay, although the company has not announced it.”
The WCW legend isn’t the only WWE Hall of Famer making a comeback after Nikki Bella made her latest return to the company on June 9. It’s since been reported that WWE is in talks with her sister, Brie Bella, sparking speculation that the pair will team up at Evolution.
