WWE Looking To Land Wantaway AEW Star

Triple H WWE cash

WWE wants to re-sign a former star.

Malakai Black signed with AEW in July 2021 after a five-year spell with WWE. Although his career with the sports entertainment giant began strongly in NXT, he got lost in the shuffle on the main roster and lost his earlier momentum.

However, Black has regularly been linked with a return since Triple H took hold of the creative reins. The Game was in charge of creative in NXT during the period where Black found success. Furthermore, Black’s wife Zelina Vega still works for the company.

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer referenced a report from Raj Giri that suggested Black will be a free agent in early 2025. He added that while it’s not exactly clear when his AEW deal expires, WWE has long been interested in bringing Black back into the fold.

WWE has been wanting him back and his wife works there and he did attempt to give notice at the time Paul Levesque got power and tried to hire back a lot of the guys that Vince fired, especially the ones in AEW. The report was his deal is up in early 2025, although like with Fenix they may have some time they can tack on due to his being out of action, but it wouldn’t be that long.

AEW Working To Block Star From Joining WWE

Regarding Rey Fenix, Meltzer noted that AEW is adding just short of a year to his contract due to time missed through injury. Crucially this would prevent him from joining his real-life brother and tag team partner Penta in a move to WWE.

Penta’s contract is expected to expire within the next two months.

The Lucha Bros have long been expected to sign with WWE, and have made no secret of their desire to leave AEW.
