WWE Legend Felt Like An Animal On Steroids
WWE Hall of Famer Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts has opened up on his experience of steroids.
Earlier this year, Ted DiBiase spoke about his experience of steroid culture in the wrestling industry in the 1980s and 1990s. Now, one of the Million Dollar Man’s rivals around that time, Jake Roberts, has spoken of his own steroid use during that period.
On a recent episode of his Snake Pit podcast, Roberts discussed the neck surgery he underwent in 1989, which stemmed from an injury he suffered two years prior. The star admitted he waited to get the surgery because he was worried he wouldn’t be able to get back in the ring afterwards if he did.
During that time, Roberts got through the pain by “leaning heavily on alcohol and pain pills.” However, it got to the point where he couldn’t lift his left arm. For a time, he masked the problem in the ring by having opponents work his arm so that he could sell it as an injury.
As he feared, doctors told Roberts that his wrestling future was in jeopardy ahead of getting surgery, however, the star had other plans.
“In fact, before the surgery, he told me he doubted if I would be able to wrestle again. That’s when I told him that he didn’t have a f***ing clue who I was, and, you know, ‘It’s a chemical world doc.'”
The “chemicals” Roberts had in mind were steroids, and true to his word, he started using them after the surgery. Unfortunately, Vince McMahon was less than happy at the newly bulked-up Roberts.
“That’s when Vince told me that he didn’t want a 290-pound Snake, which really p***ed me off because I was in the best shape of my life.”
Turning to the effect taking steroids had on his gym routine, Roberts said it turned him into an animal.
“It turns you into an animal, really does. You hunger for the lifting, that’s all you want to do is lift.”
Jake Roberts Recalls Andre The Giant Ribbing Him In WWE
During the same episode, Jake Roberts revealed that Andre The Giant used to fart on him as a joke. The legendary star said it was “amazing how long a giant can fart,” with Andre “dropping 30-second bombs” on him.
