WWE & John Cena Sued Days Before His In-Ring Retirement
John Cena is set to retire in a week.
The WWE Universe will witness the end of an era when the legendary Last Real Champion hangs up his jorts for good on the December 13 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event.
On the December 6 edition of Friday Night SmackDown, Gunther beat LA Knight to become Cena’s retirement opponent next week.
WWE And John Cena Sued Over Theme Song
Just days ahead of his impending retirement, The Never Seen 17 and WWE were hit with a federal lawsuit.
According to Post Wrestling, Kim Schofield, the daughter of Canadian bandleader Pete Schofield, filed a case in New York against John Cena, WWE, TKO, and others.
She claimed the horn sounds at the start and end of Cena’s theme entrance song “The Time Is Now” were taken from her father’s 1974 instrumental cover of the song “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.”
The lawsuit focuses only on the horn arrangement, not the whole song.
As per Kim, the horn parts were an original idea added in her father’s version, and they form the “backbone” of Cena’s entrance theme.
She said her family did not realize their music was used until around 2015.
In 2017, they made a deal with WWE for about $50,000, but she now claims WWE hid how heavily the theme and the horn parts were being used, including in a big Toyota commercial.
In this new lawsuit, Kim asked the court to cancel the 2017 settlement and recognize her rights over the horn arrangement and recording.
She also asked for more money in damages (over $150,000) and says WWE broke the old deal by releasing a 2019 version of the theme under another name, “The Champ Is Here,” with a similar horn part.
