WWE: John Cena Says He’s “Far From Retiring” & Much More!
John Cena, the current WWE Champion, recently spoke with ESPN (transcript via Sky Sports) about his career, AJ Styles and getting to share a special moment with Ric Flair after his match with Styles at this year’s Royal Rumble.
Cena’s comments on being far from retiring and how he’s still at his best.
“I am far from retiring, I feel like I am at my physical best. I don’t think it’s any secret to anybody that this is what I love to do the most and I am far from over. [I am so proud that] I am still able to do this after 16 championships and I always say that my greatest match is my next one. A lot of folks in the WWE say that maybe I am past my prime and have lost a step and that creates a giant chip on [my] shoulder. I want to showcase to everyone watching that I am still at my best.”
When Cena won the WWE Championship at this year’s Royal Rumble, defeating AJ Styles, this made Cena a 16-time World Champion. This means that he tied Ric Flair’s legendary World Title reign record. The following is what Cena said about sharing a special moment with Flair after his Royal Rumble match with Styles, and what that moment meant to him.
“I got to share a heartfelt moment with Ric immediately after the match [with Styles]. He was very congratulatory and it was very humbling. It was fantastic, a way to let everything truly sink in.”
Cena’s comments on how good he thinks AJ Styles is.
“[AJ] has pushed the envelope, spoken his mind and really challenged me. Testament to AJ, I think he is one of, it not the best, Superstars to step in a WWE ring on a nightly basis.”
Cena goes on to talk about how important WrestleMania is to him and how last year’s record-setting WrestleMania in Arlington, Texas meant a lot to him. If you would like to read the rest of Cena’s interview with Sky Sports in its entirety, you can click right here.
