WWE Considering Using John Cena’s Retirement Match To Counter AEW
WWE is looking to get the most out of John Cena.
With every WWE appearance, John Cena is inching ever closer to his retirement match in December. The veteran has vowed to hang up his boots at the end of the year and has remained adamant that there won’t be any comebacks.
However, fan speculation around his final opponent continues to run wild.
During an interview in July, John Cena claimed that plans for his last match were yet to be completed, but he expected it to be in mid-December. However, he wasn’t sure where the match would be taking place.
WWE To Take On AEW With John Cena?
On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that WWE is now considering moving Cena’s last match to a later date in December. This would enable the company to use the match as a counter to AEW Worlds End.
“Originally, the final John Cena match was gonna be in early December at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
This is not confirmed, but it does look like there is now a discussion that that date will be moved so it will be head-to-head with AEW Worlds End.”
It had previously been reported that John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar will headline a WWE Premium Live Event in September. Although the event is yet to be announced, it’s expected to be held on September 20 in Indianapolis — the same day that AEW holds All Out in Toronto.
This theory has since gathered further weight after it was noted that Brock Lesnar is being advertised for SmackDown on September 12 and September 19. A potential match in September would also explain why Lesnar isn’t being used at Clash In Paris on August 31.
